when i press the menu button in pidgin the entire thing just dies. Usually it
offers the context menu(as it does in firefox to allow for spell checking
errors and such) but in pidgin, it automatically just kills itself.
I have no idea why this is
Which menu button? Can you install pidgin-dbg and follow the directions
here to get a backtrace:

I hope this is what you were talking about because here it is.
it seems to happen from a misspelled word then pressing the menu key,
the one that brings up the context menu. On my laptop keyboard EN-US
style it is to the right of the alt key and on the left of the ctrl key
on the right side.
Actually it seems to be any attempt to fix a mispelling not just
pressing the context menu key when there's a misspelling.
