Yes, I am almost certainly using VLANs -- the only time I use the ethernet
is at uni. But I'm happy to report that it works now, using Debian kernel
release 3.2.20-1. Not sure how to mark bugs as resolved but happy for you
to do so.

Are you using VLANs? It appears that some of the chips supported by
this driver have a hardware bug that affects frames with VLAN tags.
