The overwriting error message was: No such file or directory -*-*- end of excerpt from terminal window I have ckecked my home directory and I found out that ~/.config exists but ~/.config/autostart/ does not After creating the directory ~/.config/autostart/ the preference could be changed (I still have a very big amuont of debug information on the terminal screen or tin the .xsession-errors file.
