Package: debian-installer Version: 20110106+squeeze4 Severity: wishlist
Hi, when installing a Debian Squeeze machine, while partitioning the disk, the associated help texts suggest that the option for more inodes is only required for a news server. But in my practical experience, almost all systems sooner or later seem to hit the inodes limit on /var. It is generally a very bad idea to run out of inodes, and, much worse, they even can't be retrofitted to an existing file system, it should be worth the effort to allocate more of them right from the start (re-formatting /var in an otherwise running system also has the potential for great havoc). I therefore suggest that the d-i allocates much more inodes for /var in any case, as just far too many files go in there during regular operations. If my icinga reports are correct, eight times as many inodes should be a good ballpark figure.
