This is a difference that I am saying is the problem. Try to
start xeyes *as root*, just as you did for gparted.

Sorry to say, I don't know how LXDE starts. I installed
it using aptitude. After login with userid peter and my
password, LXDE works.

LXDE is used routinely. No other problems observed with applications.
xeyes, for example, works.

The problem described by Mikko Koho occurs in a jessie system here.
ii gparted0.19.0-2 i386 GNOME partition editor
root@joule:/home/peter# gparted
No protocol specified
(gpartedbin:1835): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0
In other jessie systems, gparted works. So
