Similar things can be observed in thunderbird or palemoon or anything with spinners and throbbers and crap. I suspect it might(also) be a lousy porter/duff implementation somewhere in libpixman or thereabout. slowness reading from gfx memory and all that...

Control: unarchive -1 Control: found -1 1:7.7+3~deb7u1 Reopening this bug as the problem do not seem to be related to the non-free driver at all. I ran into this problem with a NVIDIA Corporation GF119 [Quadro NVS 310] (rev a1) card and using the free X drivers (using the nouveau kernel
