I may have found a clue to why mysql-server can't start/stop with upgrade. Mysql debian-sys-maint account and privileges. Not sure if this is related but it comes close... also see: /etc/mysql/debian.cnf for debian-sys-maint account configuration...

Andre, Just to be clear any install/upgrade/restarting work has to be effectively done as root somewhere. This is because: 1.) all the binary and config files in Debian are owned by root 2.) Daemon processes, such as mysql, typically start as root before changing to a daemon speciifc

Thank you for reply.. I'm not sure witch steps Synaptic or gpk-application takes to install or upgrade a package. in my case i have update-notifier installed, witch executes update-manager package witch shows witch updates
