I experienced the same problem with brcmsmac (complete details and logs
are on the kernel backports mailing list¹). Also, after running
make install the intel driver was replaced by VESA and gnome-shell
failed to load as a result of installing the compat-drivers

Using Debian's stock network driver is not an option for me (full report
