Ok, now I got it.  It was too hard to specify which configuration
you use or should I guess?

You can see that you have a plenty variants to
workaround this.  Use NbOfLinesForCorruptedLog in awstats or adopt
your apache log configuration to hide such messages.  Thus,
I'm not sure it's a bug.  Lets see what upstream think off.

BTW, I tried this on Jessie first, and I got BadRequest, not 501:
::1 - - [18/Jan/2015:14:43:27 +0300] "\x16\x03" 400 0 "-" "-"
or (not listen on v6):
