I did install Wheezy from netinstall-image, choosing LXDE as desktop
environment. All went fine until yesterday:

'apt-get install update-notifier-core'
which also pulls in python-vte and update-manager-gnome.
This adds the essential configuration file
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/10periodic and 99update-notifier.
