An easy workaround is to edit /usr/bin/gsmartcontrol-root and replace:
su-to-root -X -c 'gsmartcontrol $@'
with:
su-to-root -X -c 'gsmartcontrol'
Cannot understand why this has not been addressed in

gsmartcontrol-root doesn't work here either. If I launch it from konsole,
kdesu asks for root's password, but then fails to launch complaining:
