I've run into this exact problem on Ubuntu 14.04, which is obviously based
on Debian.
I've tried Tony's advice of adding /usr/share/java/tomcat-coyote.jar
to /etc/jetty/start.config
but it didn't help. Perhaps I did it wrong, I don't really understand java
configuration.

Hi Sam,
The lucene-solr package has been updated to use jetty8 and I believe
this error has been fixed in the process. So once
lucene-solr/3.6.2+dfsg-4 enters Ubuntu this issue should go away.
