Another variant of this problem: Attempting to automount an aufs view with
automounted branches.
A quick look through the code makes me wonder why the locking option was
done as a compile time thing. It's used in very few places, and

Dear Maintainer,
I tried to setup a recursive autofs mount (image on cifs volume). According to
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=626473 this should work.
auto.master:
/vol/auto /etc/auto.volumes --timeout 60 --verbose --ghost
I solved the problem. According to http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/AutoFS
recursive mounts will always fail if mount locking is enabled.
So by adding --disable-mount-locking to configure in debian/rules made
it work.
