Just switch to the console, stop it and then start X directly (or use
startx).

I'm prevented from switching to the console, I think because that is locked
out while X is starting. But starting in single mode, and running startx
from there, I got a different result. Still no mouse or keyboard input
available, and no login. It goes straight to a desktop display, with icons
on
