Indeed, you did. However, the critical part of the fix was regenerating
the configure script (and to lesser extent config.h.in) from source.
This was done at build time by adding:
DEB_AUTO_UPDATE_AUTOHEADE
For what its worth, building the package from source results in a
functional binary. That makes it a bit harder to debug if its something
in the code.
On the upside, if this is just some binary/library incompatibility, the
solution might just be incrementing the version and forcing the build
syste

It's a pity but the problem does exist. You can install a virtual machine
using Debian 9 or Debian Testing to see if the program is actually working.
