Hello, after reading through this bug report, I can only subscribe to the previous post, and add a proposal.
Please make needs_root_rights a configuration option, just the same as allowed_users is (see e.g. dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg-legacy) This way the people neither using systemd nor a display manager have a god chance of noticing that their X server won't work as expected when they do not do anything.
