The lz4 upstream system uses the CFLAGS/CPPFLAGS/LDFLAGS macros, which are overridden by the debian build system. These really should accumulate. E.g. upstream CFLAGS sets -std=c99, which is likely to break with GCC 6 having c11 as the default.
