Package: gtk2-engines-murrine
Version: 0.98.1.1-6
Followup-For: Bug #831678
I have been having this issue as well. It does look like the Ubuntu bugreport
claims to be fixed in 0.98.2, so catching up to upstream may solve this issue

Hi,
I found an old thread [1] on Xfce forum, there's a discussion about how fonts
look
on the desktop. Not sure if it's relevant now, but there are some interesting
code
samples for gtkrc file.

Setting it to 1 triggered the bug for me too.
I think this is a bug in Xfce's desktop icon handling, and having
themes disable murrine's text shadows is a workaround.

Hi,
The guys at [1] confirm the problem goes away after [2] and don't mention
the disappearance of the shadows. However, in case they missed it somehow,
I'd suggest setting textstyle to 1 instead of 0. It might work.

shadowing become blandly white, which doesn't contrast well with light
Hi,
Sorry guys, I mostly tested the patch in various Debian & Ubuntu installations
with MATE.
The only Xfce system I've tried was Xubuntu 14.04, and I didn't see any
regressions there.
Looking at bug reports linked to the mentioned LP report, I noticed a
screenshot showing

The most recent gtk2-engines-murrine update (0.98.1.1-6) to fix bug
827134 caused a regression in some themes on the Xfce desktop. The
text shadow is significantly misaligned with the text for Xfce desktop
icons. See https://launchpad.net/bugs/1598
