Indeed, I created a brand new user account whose home is in local
filesystem and file open dialog opens just fine. There must be some
KDE part that does not like nfs.

Dear Maintainer,
I suspect this bug is due to malfunction inside libkio5 but I'm
reporting it against qt4-designer because that is the way I can produce
the bug every time.
