If a package owned config file has been changed, /etc/pulse/daemon.conf
in this example, you never get to see a gui version of the below.
(I also get this with openssh updates and others)
This is on XFCE if it makes a difference.
You need to kill gpk-update-viewer then manually fix it as follows:
root@Tosh:~# apt upgrade

correct the problem.
