This patch is no longer required now as this issue has been fixed with the new release 1.1.0 in upstream. Also this includes quite a few new features and doing a new release for Debian will greatly help.

This is the patch addressing this bug which I have obtained this patch from upstream and tested it out. The upstream is waiting for further work for a new release so backporting this patch for a Debian release seems appropriate. This fixes http://bugs.debian.org/857619 for matrix-synapse.
