Hi again,
I've found my problem: there was another version of gqrx in
/usr/local/bin/ and the path gave it priority.
Sorry for the noise though I hope this helps anyone else that strikes a
similar problem.

I'm running up to date Buster on an AMD64 machine.
$ gqrx

$
