Replaced nouveau with nvidia-driver and nvidia-kernel-dkms.
Xfce4 working fine now.
Could it also be a duplicate of bug #900550 ?

I confirm the problem in Debian Testing and XFCE.
On the same system there is also MATE installed, and the issue doesn't happen.
I somehow managed to solve uninstalling the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package.
After failing to log into XFCE ...
I tried a different display manager to lightdm (I installed Slim to no
avail).
I tried creating a new user account - that did not work.
I also checked the permissions of .Xauthority and various other files -
no use.
The only thing that worked was...
