I also wanted to file a bug report on the package being out of date! And, what
a coincidence, this bug report was filed on the same day, a year ago! Sadly, no
progress was done since then.
However, since then, persepolis has released

I could create the deb package and then successfully installed it, and
also checked new features like downloading from youtube, and it was
working for me.
To build the deb package I used
$ dpkg-buildpackage -b -rfakeroot -us -uc

The problem is the incompatibility of the setup.py and debianhelper.
It can be solved either with a patch in the Debian Package or directly
in upstream. Solving it in the upstream is definitely a better idea,
but it requires to test it in different operating systems, as it
suppose to

The new version of Persepolis has been released a year
ago. If there's anything which stops you from updating the packaged
version, I would be happy to give a hand.
