Package: nedit
Version: 1:5.6a-5

NEdit per default uses XFT fonts (antialised) now, which look very good.

The problem is: This seems to work with non-ascii characters only in a UTF-8
environment.

In my locale (LANG=de_DE@euro) I cannot enter a search string like
'abc_äöü_xyz'. äöü are skipped.
(Interestingly, if I copy&paste this search string from the text window to the
search dialog, it shows blanks after the first underline, but the search works
ok and the occurrence is hit).

I have checked, that running
~> LANG=de_DE.UTF-8 nedit
does not have this problem.
But NEdit's text windows doesn't support UTF-8 (and I don't want it either).

One "solution" is to use a bitmap font like previous NEdit versions did.
~> nedit -xrm "nedit*fontList: -adobe-helvetica-bold-r-normal--12-*-*-*-*-*-*"

I have tried to set XFT font encoding, but no luck.
~> nedit -xrm "*renderTable: rt" -xrm "*rt*fontType: FONT_IS_XFT" -xrm
"*rt*fontName: Serif" -xrm "*rt*fontSize: 10" -xrm "*rt*Encoding: iso-8859-1"

A serif-10pt font is used, but the encoding option is ignored.

See: https://keithp.com/~keithp/talks/xtc2001/paper/ (Table 1)
But: https://motif.ics.com/forum/how-use-xmnfontencoding-antialiased-fonts

Motif+XFT (needs UTF-8) <--> NEdit (no UTF-8)!
