Later this evening, I will NMU python-mode to remove the Recommends: pychecker from debian/control.
This change puts python-mode back to the state it was in as of 1.0-3.1 (prior to the fix for 458997). The package should still work in general, except that the pychecker-related commands will fail unless pychecker is installed manually. I will also update debian/README.Debian to make this clear.
