This is already implemented in the upstream git repository since at
least commit c73d7dab6f1f ("Build debian package with python3")[1]

So all we're waiting for is (probably) a release 1.2 and then an updated
debian package. As the upstream author seems to match the Debian
package maintainer I wonder if there is still a problem I'm missing
given the package was already removed from testing[2] for the Python2
removal.
