exe-thumbnailer has been superseded by icoextract in sid, which provides equivalent functionality in the icoextract-thumbnailer package. Currently src:exe-thumbnailer only includes a dummy transitional package (gnome-exe-thumbnailer) carried over from stretch. I've been the upstream maintainer of exe-thumbnailer since 2016 after taking over from the original Ubuntu upstream. icoextract is a rewrite of the project in Python that has much better support for large files and 256x256 (Vista+) app icons.
