Today I upgraded the VM that I was seeing this problem on. I hadn't run MATE on it for awhile, but when I started it today, I noticed that this problem is no longer present. The baremetal system that had this problem got reverted back to Stable some months ago, so I can't verify that it's also fixed on that system.
