the said problem with MAIL var and system mailbox appears when X server
is started by gdm and not from an user's console.
Restarting mail-notification from an xterm will let shown error disapper
because MAIL, in the current running environment, is set by shell.
So the bug i still present.
I use the round-robin name http.us.debian.org in my apt.sources file.
For some reason, the Sources.gz file on one or more of the mirrors is
incorrectly constructed, or possibly I am receiving an error document.
I have not successfully investigated this aspect yet.

I've attached a patch that I think will fix this. I removed the bit
about checking to see if a password isn't required. I figured if that is
the case, then the password tried later on will be blank.
