Bug#341923: ipython: use "#!/usr/bin/env python2.4" instead of "#!/usr/bin/python2.4"

2005-12-03 Thread linux
Package: ipython
Severity: wishlist

I have my local copy of python2.4 at ~/bin/ because I need to use EGG
which is not compatible with debian's package system. While I have
changed my PATH to search the local first, ipython's hardcoded to
/usr/bin/python2.4 so I cannot test my local libs easily.

Not a bit deal though, just FYI.

Bug#341921: kmail: KMail is not installable, because it depends on the now conflicting kdelibs4c2

2005-12-03 Thread Ferenczi Viktor
Package: kmail
Version: 4:3.4.2-2
Severity: normal

KMail is not installable. Package manager removed when migrating my system
from kdelibs4c2 to kdelibs4c2a, then did not installed it again. I lost
the ability to send/receive mail in the usual way. Many other packages are
also affected, such as KMix and Quanta. The unstable repository seems to be
seriously broken, at least for me.

Bug#320871: Bug #320871: lftp does not work with ftps (can not list directories)

2005-12-03 Thread Andrew Joyce
I am also experiencing this bug. Is there anything I can contribute to
help diagnose or isolate the problem. This is happening over a number
of different computers with lftp connecting to ProFTPd servers. Other
clients do not seem to experience this problem so I suspect that it is
lftp and not ProFTPd that has this bug.

I hadn't tried it with 2.6 yet, as upstream specifically lists 1.0 as a
requirement. I'll try to build it tonight, hopefully it will work.

Uh, the only change required to rebuild passepartout with libxml++2.6 is to
do s/1.0/2.6/ in configure.ac. Do you have specifics on how synfig fails

Note that pbuilder is used rather more extensively as sarge backport mechanism.
Breaking pbuilder that way won't be too helpful.

 But it does use its own kernel brand probably and probably a
different hardware discovering mechanism.

Could you please post the output of "(lspci ; lspci -n) | sort" under
Knoppix as well as the output of "lsmod". It will help identifying the
needed module and update discover's map.

Hmm, my ITP (http://www.synfig.com - 2D animation studio) requires
libxml++ 1.0 at the moment. I'll talk to upstream about providing
compatibility with later versions though. Do you know of any information
for migrating to 2.6?

IIRC the fix is to just turn off ecoff support. The way archive
formats are detected is a bit ad-hoc...

There still exist bootloaders which need ECOFF support in BFD.

Hi Sam,

I've prepared an NMU to fix this bug in opencv. The patch for the NMU is
attached, and I'll be uploading the package shortly to the NEW queue. If
you disagree with any of the changes made, please make a maintainer upload
in its place.

2005-12-03 Thread Junichi Uekawa
Hi,

I've committed the change to CVS to use --allow-unauthenticated,
but it's obviously not supported in sarge version of apt.
I'll revert it later.

--force-yes is understood by apt in sarge.

Bug#340486: Unable to compile modules, fixdep.c required

2005-12-03 Thread Jurij Smakov

Hi,

After a discussion with kernel-package maintainer, we came to the
conclusion that it's a kernel-package problem. It was trying to run
oldconfig target for the kernel in the linux-headers directory, which does
not contain enough files for this to succeed. The fixed kernel-package
(10.012) has appeared in unstable today, and should take care of the
problems you are encountering. Please give it a spin and post the results
to the bug trail.

Thanks and best regards,

Hm, this looks like the mips*-linux ar fails to handle 64bit archives.

Bug#341917: apt-listchanges: make visual difference between NEWS and changelog

2005-12-03 Thread Adeodato Simó
Package: apt-listchanges
Version: 2.59-0.2
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

  I would like a visual indication of whether what apt-listchanges is
  displaying is a changelog entry, or a NEWS.Debian entry. A prominent
  "NEWS.Debian\n===\n\n" header for NEWS entries would suffice.

  Rationale: most of the time, apt-listchanges will only display
  changelog entries (i.e., because there are no NEWS.Debian entries). If
  one is e.g. in a hurry, one knows they can be dismissed with 'q'.
  However, it is then easy to dismiss NEWS entries as changelog entries
  because there is no visual difference between the two; one would press
  'q', be presented with a second page of entries (changelogs this
  time), and realize that what he dismissed were NEWS entries...

  Thanks.

Bug#317998: apt authentication approaches

2005-12-03 Thread Junichi Uekawa

Hi,

I think the potential for future apt authentication in pbuilder is as follows:

1. allow unauthenticated per default for pbuilder create/update

2. allow installing gnupg package for authentication

3. optionally allow not using --allow-unauthenticated
  within pbuilder. Make this option configurable.

4. debug away.

Bug#328442: Possibly a glibc<->linux-kernel-headers<->wavemon thing?

2005-12-03 Thread Ken Bloom
is it possible that glibc and wavemon have to be built with the same
version of linux-kernel-headers for this to work?

Current glibc: glibc 2.3.5-8.1
built against: linux-kernel-headers_2.6.13+0rc3-2

Current (broken) wavemon: wavemon 0.4.0b-8
built against: linux-kernel-headers_2.6.12.0-1

I recompiled on my system against the with
linux-kernel-headers_2.6.13+0rc3-2 and a 2.6.14 kernel , and
everything worked.

If someone can do more testing, is it possible that we just need to
come up with the right kind of dependancy on linux-kernel-headers?

I'll send it upstream, but my policy is to not apply anything until
the translator sends me a fixed .po; that's because I don't speak
French, so I am in no position to evaluate any proposed fixes.

This sometimes is a problem when a particular language translator goes
AWOL, and the language translation team is unwilling or unable to
assign a new translator. Usually what I do in that case is to go back
to the people submitted bug reports and ask if they might be willing
to go to the translation project and take over translation of
e2fsprogs for that particular language.

(And this whole thing is a mess; sometimes I regret adding the
internationalization code to e2fsprogs in the first place, since it
seems to add more problems that it solves)

If that's true it is a binutils bug. Ar and ld (are supposed to) default

Everyone else does this by building mips64-linux compilers instead. I
don't know if it might break something entertainingly to have gcc
misreport 32-bit machines as mips64-linux, though. Probably very
little.

> +! MULTILIB_DIRNAMES = n32 32 64

Why bother?  That's what this:

> +  MULTILIB_OSDIRNAMES = ../lib32 ../lib ../lib64

is for. The other names are GCC-internal.

Do you have any evidence that this is necessary? Why? The 64-bit C++
headers work perfectly fine for the 32-bit target, at least - I've
tested that.

Hi Chris,

It appears that libxml++ only has one reverse-dependency in the archive, and
that all other packages depend on libxml++2.6 now; and libxml++ gave me fits

to libxml++2.6, and libxml++ dropped from testing/unstable?

packages. This produced the names of 71 maintainers in Sid today.

  grep-dctrl -F Build-Depends automake
/var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_sid_main_source_Sources |
grep-dctrl -v -F Build-Depends -e 'automake[n1]' -n -s Maintainer | sort -u

I did not feel the need to include those lists here because anyone can
use those commands to generate that list on the fly.

I spot checked two packages (gconf and time) and neither of those two
ran automake during package build. However they do patch both source
and derived files and suffer from the well known problem that
timestamps are not set on patched files and therefore a race condition
exists which may cause the autotools to be run to bring those files up
to date. They probably depend upon the autotools just for the case
when this condition is triggered without really understanding the
underlying timestamp problems. In these two cases it would be better
to touch the files up to date to ensure timestamp ordering of files
and then remove the build dependency upon the autotools entirely.

For my test I changed "automake" to "automaken" and both of these
packages built without issue. Although those two did not call
automake explicitly I am sure that others in the list do. At least I
hope they are not all as silly!

Updating the automake package to change the alternatives priority will
not immediately break any of these packages. Those are all already
built and installed in the archive. Those deb files will continue to
be installable. It would only make them FTBFS upon the next upload of
a new version of the package.

However upon trying to recompile them for a new architecture such as
amd64, if it ever is allowed to enter Sid, it would be FTBFS then.
Hopefully amd64 will eventually become part of Debian and so we should
definitely address the issue.

The manual already documents this.

  man sleep

 sleep NUMBER[SUFFIX]...

 sleep NUMBER[smhd]...

This uses the same notation as all of the coreutils commands. Did you

Bug#341913: libgutenprint2: Misaligned output from an Epson RX620

2005-12-03 Thread Mike Brodbelt
Package: libgutenprint2
Version: 4.3.99+cvs20051122.dfsg.1-1
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

Printing 4x6" photo prints in "Borderless" mode produces output so badly
misaligned that the functionality of the device is compromised. When
printing an image with the correct aspect ratio for the paper, with Page
Size set to "Epson 4x6 Photo Paper" and Media Type set to "Premium
Glossy Photo Paper", the output image has approximately a 5mm top
border, a 3 mm bottom border, and a 1mm left border that remain
unprinted. Additionally, about 10% of the image width is lost of the
right hand side, and about 15-20% of the image height is lost on the
bottom of the print.

Printing the same JPEG file from a memory card inserted in the front of
the printer produces correctly aligned full bleed output, though Gimp
does a better job on the colours. I believe the RX620 uses the same
print engine as the R300.

If that's true it is a binutils bug. Ar and ld (are supposed to) default
to use the format of the first input object as output format. But I
wonder why "GNUTARGET = elf64-trad*mips" works for n32 then, it would
need elf32-ntrad*mips in that case.

It probably can. This is likely the result of my attempts to keep my
changes some what isolated early on. I'll have a look at reducing this
to the existing biarch patch.

as we don't have all required libraries like zlib for biarch in lib,
some of with_lib32* and with_lib64* macros have to be disabled (or
maybe that's only the case for the gcc-4.1 packaging).

Building gcc-4.0 does need the tri-arch version of libc6 (patches in
341884). Unfortunately, there does seem to be a bit of a chicken and egg
problem on the first build. I'd be glad to provide a copy of my packages
if that would help. gcc-4.0 doesn't seem to have a problem with missing
libs other than the ones that are built as part of libc6, so the
dependency on zlib may be a 4.1 issue.

where are these used?

ar and ld get confused if they are not set. For some reason, it can't
decide which binary format to use. It may be a binutils bug, but I was
trying to not have to dig into that package and create a dependency on
a specific patch level of yet another package.

Yes, probaly sockad should be changed to contain an array of longs instead
of chars, since it is supposed to be castable I really hate C :)

A somewhat cleaner solution (as pointed out by Steve again) would be to
use struct sockaddr_storage instead of sockaddr, that will have the
correct alignment and is guaranteed to have enough storage for both
ipv4 and ipv6 sockets.

Bug#341897: grub: update-grub has stopped finding kernels not in /boot

Before or after the line

 ### END DEBIAN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST

?

The update-grub manpage makes no mention of managing boot options for
kernels or OSes located outside of /boot, and I can't remember a version
that did so. At least the second half of your cited entries were clearly
added by debian-installer, not by update-grub; update-grub's only
responsibilities in this case are to *not* attempt to manage entries located
below the 'END DEBIAN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST' line. And I can confirm that
the current version of update-grub still behaves as expected on my system.

Bug#341823: cpad-kernel-source: Ignores KSRC provided on commandline

I'm not sure if that is strictly true. The following should work:

> fakeroot debian/rules kdist_configure kdist_image
> KSRC=/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.14-2-386 KPKG_DEST_DIR="\$(CURDIR)/.."
> KDREV="0.99.jones1"

As should the line you gave if the '-e' option was also passed to make.

But I have some question as to whether what you first tried should
work by default or not. My best authority at this stage, runs something
like:

 6.9 Variables from the Environment
 ==

 Variables in `make' can come from the environment in which `make' is
 run. Every environment variable that `make' sees when it starts up is
 transformed into a `make' variable with the same name and value. But
 an explicit assignment in the makefile, or with a command argument,
 overrides the environment. (If the `-e' flag is specified, then values
 from the environment override assignments in the makefile. *Note
 Summary of Options: Options Summary. But this is not recommended
 practice.)

Which seems to indicate this is intentional and preferred behaviour
that we should not mess with lightly (and hence there is no bug
here at all) -- but I'll take arguments as to why this variable
is special and should be taken from the environment by default.
Along with a list of what others should receive similar red-carpet
treatment if any should.

cheers,
Ron

Bug#341908: pidentd: needs to be more careful about when to update inetd

2005-12-03 Thread Julian Gilbey
Package: pidentd
Version: 3.0.18-3

When I switched from ident2 to pidentd, the inetd.conf file was not
correctly updated. This is because ident2 left the following line in
inetd.conf:

ident   stream  tcp nowait  identd /usr/sbin/ident2 ident2 -i -n

and the pidentd postinst thinks this is a pidentd line. A possible
patch would just be to be stricted with the checking in the postinst, eg:

if grep -q "/usr/sbin/identd " /etc/inetd.conf; then
enable_if_alone
else

But you might also need to remove incorrect entries as well.

As you can see from udev.rules, udev is configured to ignored the dm-*

Bug#327719: emacs-lisp-intro DIR-ENTRY error

Hi Romain,

> and the Emacs Lisp Intro manual.

Thanks. I didn't know about that. I just took a look at them in
emacs-snapshot-common.  Very cool!

Do you have an idea about when emacs 22 will be released? I refrained
from asking Eli as expected release dates are a touchy subject with a
lot of people even when there exists a general sense as to whether it
is measured in weeks, months, or years.

Do you know who is likely to maintain the debian package of emacs22 --
you, Rob Browning, someone else?

With the new info files in what will be an emacs-22 subdirectory,
there won't be a filename collisions, but it probably make sense
to have the new emacs-22 package conflict with and replace
emacs-lisp-intro and elisp-manual.

Thanks again,
Kirk

Which timestamps are wrong: The files in tha package, or the
packages files itself?

Where did you get the files from? Looks like your mirror's clock is wrong.
If the files IN the packages have wrong timestamps: Which packages
exactly? at least for amd64 and i386 this is not reproducible.

Thanks a lot!
These POs really needed a review.

I could not directly apply the patch to the CVS PO, so I applied it to the
0.22 fr.po, and applied manually the diff between the updated 0.22 PO and
the CVS PO.
So, with a little bit of luck, I should have included all your changes.

Bug#338148: camlstartup asm file

Hi,

The segv happens, according to gdb, in the caml_startup__code_begin
function. This function seems to come from the camlstartup temporary
file, created by asmcomp/asmlink.ml.
Steve Langasek asked me to send this startup file to the bug, so you'll
find it attached.
This startup file is normally deleted by ocamlopt, but it's kept (in
/tmp) with the -dstartup option.

Bug#341906: octave prints copyright/debugging information on stdout instead of stderr

2005-12-03 Thread Frederik Eaton
Package: octave2.9
Version: 2.9.4-8
Severity: normal

My version of Octave prints copyright/debugging information on stdout
instead of stderr... It would be better to have it on stderr so that I
can redirect just the output to a pipe or a file.

Thanks,

Frederik

Wouldn't it be better to mention the technical term "kiosk" here?

Bug#340390: Installation report: no disks detected

2005-12-03 Thread Ross Boylan
Knoppix 4.0.2 from 2005-09-23 is able to detect the disk as /dev/sda.
This is quite bizarre, since Knoppix is based on Debian and, like the
etch installer beta 1, uses the 2.6.12 kernel.

The Intel developer who has been putting ICH7 patches into the kernel
(the relevant component of the motherboard, I think), says 2.6.12
should be able to handle the hardware.

This library implements the JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) specification in
Ruby, allowing the developer to easily convert data between Ruby and JSON. You
can think of it as a low fat alternative to XML, if you want to store data to
disk or transmit it over a network rather than use a verbose markup language.

Bug#341903: libc6: strfry() gives skewed distributions

2005-12-03 Thread Steinar H. Gunderson
Package: libc6
Version: 2.3.2.ds1-22
Severity: minor
Tags: patch

strfry() tries to shuffle its string using random swaps, but it uses the
wrong strategy, and thus not all permutations are equally likely. The
code doing the shuffling itself looks like this:

  len = strlen (string);
  for (i = 0; i < len; ++i)
{
  int32_t j;
  char c;

  __random_r (&rdata, &j);
  j %= len;

  c = string[i];
  string[i] = string[j];
  string[j] = c;
}

In other words, for the string 'abc' j will always be between 0 and 2
(inclusive), giving the following possibilities (all equally likely):

  j0 j1 j2  result
   0  0  0  cab
   0  0  1  bca
   0  0  2  bac
   0  1  0  cba
   0  1  1  acb
   0  1  2  abc
   0  2  0  bca
   0  2  1  abc
   0  2  2  acb
   1  0  0  cba
   1  0  1  acb
   1  0  2  abc
   1  1  0  cab
   1  1  1  bca
   1  1  2  bac
   1  2  0  acb
   1  2  1  bac
   1  2  2  bca
   2  0  0  acb
   2  0  1  bac
   2  0  2  bca
   2  1  0  abc
   2  1  1  cab
   2  1  2  cba
   2  2  0  bac
   2  2  1  cba
   2  2  2  cab

Sorting and counting gives us the following distribution:

   4  abc
   5  acb
   5  bac
   5  bca
   4  cab
   4  cba

In other words, this is clearly skewed; some strings will appear 25% more often
than others.

I propose changing the code to:

  len = strlen (string);
  for (i = 0; i < len - 1; ++i)
{
  int32_t j;
  char c;

  __random_r (&rdata, &j);
  j %= (len-i);

  c = string[i];
  string[i] = string[j+i];
  string[j+i] = c;
}

which will turn it into a proper Fisher-Yates shuffle. This gives us exactly n!
paths for a string with N characters, and since there are n! possible
permutations, we get a one-to-one mapping, and all possibilities are equally
likely.

I'm also a bit disappointed that strfry() is locale-unaware... surely such an
important function should be able to shuffle at least UTF-8 strings correctly.

Bug#341901: udev: Ownership and permissions incorrect for device-mapper devices and directories

2005-12-03 Thread Roger Leigh
Package: udev
Version: 0.076-3
Severity: normal

The ownership and permissions for all device-mapper devices differ from
other block devices on the system (root:disk, 0660):

brw--- 1 root root 254,  4 2005-12-03 12:48 hda_vg-var

In addition, the directories for each volume group are only readable by
root:

$ ls -ld /dev/hda_vg
drwx-- 2 root root 260 2005-12-03 12:48 /dev/hda_vg/

The permissions on the directories should be 0775, and the owner should
also be root:disk IMO.

The incorrect permissions make it hard to use the "disk" group, e.g. for
backup tools such as amanda.

In short, I would very much like to
1) Have the default permissions of LVM/device-mapper devices be 0660.
2) Have the default ownership be root:disk.
3) Have the default volume group directory permissions be 0775
   (including /dev/mapper).
4) Have the default volume group directory ownership be root:disk.

This is also a problem for sarge, as well as unstable. If this is
possible to fix by tweaking permissions.rules, that would be very handy
(but for volume groups, it's not possible to know the names in advance,
unlike /dev/mapper/).

Thanks,
Roger

No, it does not affect Sparc. Problem was that in some cases default

Bug#338816: #338816: Odd behavior with renaming items with high-ascii/unicode characters in freedb file

2005-12-03 Thread Martin Michlmayr
Hi Kristine,

Can you please let me know if 3.1.1-12 fixes the problems you reported
in #338816. I'll be on holidays without net for 2 weeks soon and it
would be good to get confirmation before that this is fixed (and that
I didn't make it worse ;)

Yes, probaly sockad should be changed to contain an array of longs instead
of chars, since it is supposed to be castable I really hate C :)

Actually, I think one thing is missing in this explanation: that you
need to activate the plug-ins. Arne, please apply this patch after
the original one below.

Bug#341898: krb5: block migration to testing for now

2005-12-03 Thread Russ Allbery
Package: krb5
Severity: serious
Justification: maintainer

krb5 accidentally got a high urgency from the experimental upload, but this
is a new major release and it shouldn't go into testing that quickly.
(Among other things, there are a few other packages that need updated
versions that should migrate into testing around the same time.)

Block it from migrating to testing for right now, probably for about ten
days from this message.

why can't the biarch-include patch not be used?

please define these for mips here.

as we don't have all required libraries like zlib for biarch in lib,
some of with_lib32* and with_lib64* macros have to be disabled (or
maybe that's only the case for the gcc-4.1 packaging).

where are these used?

Bug#341897: grub: update-grub has stopped finding kernels not in /boot

2005-12-03 Thread Julian Gilbey
Package: grub
Version: 0.95+cvs20040624-17
Severity: serious

Last time I used update-grub (a while ago, Jan 2005, I think!), it
automagically added these entries at the end (the repetitiveness I can
cope with, although it was buggy!)

But when I ran the testing version, these entries were not included in
my menu.lst. Good job I noticed: for all that I dislike Windows, I
still have to use it for some work-related stuff :/

Also, it didn't detect Linux distros on other partitions. What's up?

Thanks!

The server crashes on changing column's default value. The column type is

This could be because you hit a bug. It is also possible that this binary

Bug#341893: typo in package description

2005-12-03 Thread Alexander Klauer

Package: wngerman
Version: 20030222-8
Severity: minor

The package description says:

"It is based on the famous hkgerman dictionary (using the old
German orthography, which is available as wgerman), with many
corrections and additions."   ^^^

"wgerman", however, seems to be obsolete and is replaced by
"wogerman".

Alexander

Bug#341890: Writes tags DATE = 0 when there's no year

When jack can find no DYEAR or YEAR information in jack.freedb, it
will happily write DATE=0 to the meta information, which of course is
completely bogus. This problem was introduced in patch

What does the man-pages.html page do what the lintian page doesn't,
except providing some extra instructions? If the lintian report seems
the (most) correct source and the man-pages.html page is not accurate,
why not take the lintian report as the place to look for packages to
write a man page for?

Bug#341892: libimage-exiftool-perl: incorrect "Scale Factor To 35mm Equivalent" with Canon 20D

2005-12-03 Thread Wolfgang Weisselberg
Package: libimage-exiftool-perl
Version: 5.67-1
Severity: normal

The Canon 20D has a crop factor of 1.6. However:
$ exiftool img_3944.jpg | grep -E '[0-9 ]m'
[...]
Scale Factor To 35mm Equivalent : 1.2
[...]
Focal Length: 200.0mm (35mm equivalent: 233.5mm)
[...]
Lens: 70.0 - 200.0mm (35mm equivalent: 81.7 -
233.5mm)
$

More correct would be "1.6", "200.0mm (35mm equivalent: 320.0mm)" and
"70.0 - 200.0mm (35mm equivalent: 112.0 - 320.0mm)"

Example .cr2 and .jpg available on request.

Not with tetex-bin 2.0.2-31, maybe with version 3. Avoiding dvips option
-z in case of trouble helps and doesn't use new, not yet verified code, so
I'm happy with this solution.

Osamu, Ardo: time to upload ...

PS: I'm not sure about #337259. It is not necessary to remove broken version
of debiandoc-sgml from debian-reference's build-depends, is it? Is a
special action needed to ask the buildds to rebuild debian-reference?
