did not work for me, because the host mounts nfs shares by both
eth0 and eth1 .

What I do not know is whether the Debian installer uses apt (I presume so,
but I do not know).
You know that the Debian installer gives you the option to install some
package sets. I presume that gdm belonged to the "Desktop" set.

I've read the policy, and you're right about writing the SMTP hostname
to /etc/mailname: it's really different things in the general case. I
have fixed this locally: although the config script stills reads
/etc/mailname as a default SMTP hostname, it will never write to
/etc/mailname.
