I fail to reproduce this. I have a suspicion that on some people systems
indeed gtk and wxwidgets are causing problems.
Could you try running audacity without GNOME? (e.g. in KDE)

Yes, 0.0.7-1 is in experimental, but not for amd64. So I used pbuilder
to see that my bug is no longer reproducible.
