Package: dpkg Version: 1.15.5.6 Severity: important [ For debian-dpkg, see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dpkg/+bug/512096 for a description of the problem, basically a configuration script is empty /broken due to data loss and the recovery needs manual intervention ] Le mardi 26 janvier 2010, Jean-Baptiste Lallement a écrit : What could be done ? Some suggestions: - package manager : try to unpack the archive again in order to overwrite the faulty files, if it's not found fetch then unpack the archive, and try performing the requested operation again. If that fails, then really cancel the installation. But the package manager need to know it's an exec format error and that's not easy due to the comments above. Another option could be to ask to the user if he wants to try the workaround. - dpkg : add a 'force' option to 'vanish' the package if the removal script fails during a removal and/or configuration purging ( with a BIG RED warning that it can seriously damage the user's installation) instead of running abort-remove or leaving the package half-installed. But I don't know the dpkg internals to know if it's a valid option. I would suggest that dpkg detects the error and brings back the package state to half-installed forcing the package manager to unpack it again. It seems to me that the error code ENOEXEC is sufficiently specific (and it could be associated to a check of the file length if needed) for this to be reasonable. BTW, I think it would have been wise to include the upstream dpkg maintainers in the discussion from the start, you're lucky that I'm following ubuntu-devel... We would also be glad if some people could volunteer to triage dpkg bugs on launchpad and make sure we have everything filed in the Debian BTS. Bug#566351: libgcrypt11: should not change user id as a side effect
Ansgar Burchardt ans...@43-1.org writes: Werner Koch w...@gnupg.org writes: On Mon, 25 Jan 2010 16:13, ans...@43-1.org said: Yes, it is even quite simple to write such an application: Just call getgroups(), getpwent(), ... on a system that uses LDAP. If there is no caching daemon like nscd running, the application will use libnss-ldap (via glibc's Name Service Switch) which can in turn use gnutls. That is a broken design. glibc should never ever allow suid processes to run code from external services it is not 100% sure they are clean. I guess libnss_files and the other standard ones might be fine, but LDAP or even LDAPS are very problematic. Such code belongs into a separate process and not into the one of an arbitrary - possible suid - application. It can run in a separate process if nscd (glibc's name service caching daemon) is running. But if nscd is not installed or not running for some reason, there is not much to do except doing the query in the same process. Why can't the system call fail in that situation? There are enough sensible reasons for an application using gcrypt only indirectly (eg. applications using gnutls should not need to care which cryptographic library is used by it, more so for applications that only use a library like libcurl that uses gnutls, but can also use OpenSSL). I agree here though. /Simon -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

Maybe they need to be able to listen on some specific UDP or TCP ports. I don't know and that's why I tagged this bug with help. All of this is true on my build nodes. Doing the same will act as a temporary workaround should you need it. I just need to work out why it's trying user authentication in the first place, then I should have a fix soon. BTW, I am still using dchroot because schroot is missing the possibility to run a command (it only allows an executable and its arguments). Is it planned to add this feature to schroot? Not exactly, but it is possible to get the same behaviour. dchroot would concatenate /all/ non-option command-line arguments together (separated by spaces) and then pass this to su(3). This lets you run shell commands easily, but at the cost of completely breaking quoting. Due to the breakage, the schroot command and options are never concatenated and are passed through to execve(2) unchanged, eliminating quoting issues. This is the reason we won't directly support the dchroot method for running a command--it would just re-introduce the breakage we worked hard to remove. I would suggest running schroot -c $chroot -- sh -c '$command' to run a shell command. With the addition of sh -c and the quoting around the command, it's functionally identical to dchroot. This is, in fact, just what dchroot does internally. You could maybe do this with a wrapper script or shell alias, but then again, dchroot is already such a wrapper. Regards, Roger -- .''`. I found I'd missed updating the files to be installed. I've now updated that too and made some other (mostly minor) improvements. I've chosen to leave the following components disabled for now as I'm unsure how relevant they are for Debian: The new list is: - osasnmpd (was already disabled) - vmur (was enabled, but files were not included in the deb) - cpuplugd (daemon, so would require some work) - ip_watcher - ziomon So I've disabled ip_watcher. There were several executables that were built in the previous version, but not included in the deb: chchp, lschp, tape390_crypt, vmconvert. I guess the main reason to exclude things is because either: - they are not useful on Debian systems - using them would conflict with the Debian way of configuring devices (using sysconfig-hardware) That the basis on which I've excluded ip_watcher and also the following additional executables: chzcrypt, lszcrypt, mon_fsstatd, mon_procd. However, as my s390 experience is limited to the Hercules emulator it's quite possible that I've been too conservative. Convincing me that something should be included should be fairly easy ;-) I've created a (temporary) git repository that includes all changes relative to the current 1.6.2-1 version: git clone alioth.debian.org:git/s390-tools.git That should have been (requires SSH access to alioth): git clone alioth.debian.org:~fjp/git/s390-tools.git I'm not 100% if that works for others than me, but it's updated with my latest changes. I hope you can use that as a base for your update. Alternatively I can also upload the new version myself (and add myself as Uploader), but a review would be welcome. That's unchanged :-) Note that the debian revision I used needs fixing before upload! Already done in current version. In lenny's samba, instead, there's no such entry, so ACL are: neuromante:/srv/users/Prova# getfacl . # file: . # owner: root # group: ced user::rwx group::rwx group:centrali:rwx mask::rwx other::--- default:user::rwx default:group::rwx default:group:centrali:rwx default:mask::rwx default:other::--- Note that there's a (unnamed) default acl entry of 'default:group::rwx' but no default named ac entry like 'default:group:ced:rwx' for the owning group 'ced'. In this way every file created into this forder by an user in 'centralino' group get owned by 'centralino' and the 'ced' acl are not propagated. More, if in windows explorer i try to force the acl for 'ced' to 'folder, subfolders and files' there's no way to set them, are no applied. After some test, some questions on samba italian lists, some google and digging expecially on debian and samba BTS, it seems that the trouble was identified and fixed in lates 3.4 and 3.5 version, see: https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6878 This bug speaks about users, not group, but it's the same... I'm staring to code a simple script to run at night that will add a 'named default acl' for every folder as a temporary countermeasure, but this seems really a grave functionality bugs and i hope debian samba team will backport and apply the fix to 3.2. Bug#567096: dns2tcpd does not answer NS queries
Package: dns2tcp Version: 0.4.dfsg-5.1 Severity: grave Does anyone actually use this package? Either it is heavily broken or I am doing something wrong. I set up dns2tcpd and a NS record as described in the documentation. However calling dig -t NS on the subdomain times out for the vast majority of name servers I tried. A timeout also indicates that it is not a caching problem. So I went on to see what's happening and installed tcpdump. It seems like many nameservers want to verify NS records by querying the target server (dns2tcpd). Unfortunately dns2tcpd has no handling for these requests, so it simply drops them. The asking nameserver then believes that dns2tcpd is unreachable and does not forward queries. Working out a patch for this shouldn't be difficult (famous last words), as it is only like handling a new packet type and answering it with information provided in the configuration file. During my research I actually found a (one) public dns server that does not do this kind of NS checking. In most use cases of dns2tcp one will not be able to choose a dns server though. Bug#566351: libgcrypt11: should not change user id as a side effect
On Wed, 27 Jan 2010 01:17, ans...@43-1.org said: There are enough sensible reasons for an application using gcrypt only indirectly (eg. applications using gnutls should not need to care which cryptographic library is used by it, more so for applications that only use a library like libcurl that uses gnutls, but can also use OpenSSL). There is an easy solution to this: Use your own memory handler. Anyway, they need to care about this; read the gcrypt manual to see why this is important. In general all these inter-library dependencies are a mess. They subvert the assumptions of carefully written software. We have seen large trees of dependencies whre severeal vesion of the same library are in use - that works only by coincidence and yields bugs which are very hard to track down. There is also a licences compliance problem with this approach: I noticed in several cases OpenSSL used along with GPL software due to dependencies the developer was not aware of (e.g. OpenLDAP). In Perl using Devel::Peek:SvREFCNT(%m) does not return the reference count of %m, but rather treats %m as a list of arguments to the function causing a runtime error. Bug#565506: Confirmed: the git branch fixes the issue
Hello Brice, Are there plans to backport these patches into Debian version of the Radeon driver package? I could certainly upload a new package with latest 6.12-branch git snapshot. That would surely solve the issue but the question is how many other issues will be introduced by uploading the newest git snapshot. So far, I can confirm that applying the two patches mentioned earlier to the current package source code seems to remove the segfaulting server issue satisfactorily. Of course, these patches would have to be removed from the Debian package as soon as a new upstream-fixed version is packaged. I do not feel qualified to decide which option is better but regarding this issue, either will do. Bug#567098: linux-image-2.6.26-2-ixp4xx: adm8511/pegasus usb ethernet device loses mac on nslu2 when cold-plugged
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-2-ixp4xx Version: 2.6.26-19lenny2 Severity: normal I've been experimenting with a Pegasus-chipset USB ethernet adapter on an NSLU2 unit. If the adapter is connected prior to system boot, although it will be recognized by the kernel and udev, it starts out with a MAC address of 00:00:00:00:00:00. Since Debian's networking system doesn't customarily set MAC addresses (and wouldn't really know the right one anyway if the device didn't express one), this leaves the device unusable without manual intervention. It can't be ifupped without setting the MAC; once that's done, the device functions normally. This behavior does not manifest if the adapter is hot-plugged; if the host is booted first and the device plugged in hot, it does exhibit a nonzeroed MAC and works without intervention. I did my testing with the NSLU2's onboard ethernet also enabled, there being no other good way to control the unit. Some pertinent hardware info: # udevadm info -a -p /sys/class/net/eth1 Udevinfo starts with the device specified by the devpath and then walks up the chain of parent devices. It prints for every device found, all possible attributes in the udev rules key format. If you are still seeing it, can you try running ???vim -u NORC -N??? to eliminate any interactions from your vimrc? I was still seeing this until a week ago. I noticed there hadn't been any activity on the bug since I last commented, so I contacted the author of the script directly. He wasn't aware of the Debian bug, and couldn't reproduce it on his end, so we worked together to fix it. There was a bug in his script that wasn't processing properly if the default shell was csh or tcsh. He has a new version that works for me regardless of where /bin/sh points to; he said he wanted to do more testing before publishing it, and after he was done he'd upload it to the project page at vim.org. I'll reply back here with the version number once I notice it's uploaded so it can be included in future versions. (This is the message I tried to send 12 hours ago; for some reason, it didn't seem to go through, and now I see you've sent him a patch already; oh well, I tried But, your patch was the same fix he'd come up with.) Bug#567104: mpg321: Does not work without a controlling terminal
Package: mpg321 Version: 0.2.11-1.1 Severity: important Tags: patch Hi, since version 0.2.11, mpg321 will no longer run without a controlling terminal. This is caused by the xterm title setting code that needs a controlling terminal and quits if it can't find one. I've marked this bug as important, since the most common usecase for mpg321 is probably running from music daemons like mpd or moosic. This bug prevents mpg321 from working with moosic at least, I haven't tested mpd. I've attached a patch that fixes this issue. It makes mpg321 not fail when no controlling terminal was found. Instead, it will simply skip the terminal title setting with an error message. This patch adds some comments and cleans up osc_print and renames it to set_term_title, for extra source code clarity. Bug#566351: libgcrypt11: should not change user id as a side effect
Hi, Simon Josefsson si...@josefsson.org writes: It can run in a separate process if nscd (glibc's name service caching daemon) is running. But if nscd is not installed or not running for some reason, there is not much to do except doing the query in the same process. Why can't the system call fail in that situation? nscd is optional and one probably does not want to make the system unusable if it crashes (no possibility to log in when you cannot access the user database). It would likely also require special handling of the entire boot process when nscd is not yet available. Bug#567107: Updated pt_BR translation for package fluxbox
Package: fluxbox Version: 1.1.1-6 Severity: Tags: patch First of all, please excuse me for not sending this via reportbug. I'm on dial-up and can only connect with Windows. I've already translated some packages using the traditional .po file system. Fluxbox is different and I don't even know how to apply my translation to my system. I translated the messages in fluxbox-1.1.1\nls\pt_BR\Translation.m (added the messages that were missing in relation to the en_US file). Besides that I noted some extra window menu items that aren't in the Translation.m file. These are under 'Remember...' (in English) submenu: Minimized, which translated is = Minimizada Maximized, which translated is = Maximizada Fullscreen, which translated is = Tela cheia I hope this will be enough for you to update the pt_BR translation for fluxbox. I'm using Linux antiX-M 8.5-beta 4 with 2.6.32-2mepis1 kernel. The source for the translated file was package fluxbox_1.1.1.orig.tar.gz from the fluxbox sid package page. I don't know how to merge the .diff package but from what I could tell it doesn't have any improvement on this issue. I also checked the messages in my installed Fluxbox which is version 1.1.1-5 (former testing package). Translation.m Description: Binary data

Bug#566844: libc6 causing Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info

All I get is Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info. If I upgrade a system to 2.7-18lenny2, I immediately start having problems, and as soon as I revert back to 2.7-18, everything works perfectly. I've been using the same NIS setup for close to 5 years now, and have been moving it along from Sarge, to Etch, to Lenny without any problems...until now. I am sorry about that. This security update was there to prevent leaking adjunct passwords to normal users. My /etc/nsswitch.conf: passwd: compat group: compat shadow: compat Like I said, I am using NIS, however both the NIS master server and the NIS clients both break when I upgrade libc6 to 2.7-18lenny2. The NIS server is again, a stock Debian Lenny server. With the NIS server, I am combining the passwd/shadow files on the NIS server into just the passwd map (using the MERGE_PASSWD option). So the NIS clients don't actually see any shadow file entries for any of the NIS accounts. Ok, so users were able to login even if there was no shadow entry. I've also tried changing the nsswitch.conf file to: passwd: nis files group: nis files shadow: files You'll notice I left the nis option off of the shadow entry, since there's no need for it, since there's no shadow map. My guess is that, this is the cause of the problem...In other words, because the system isn't seeing shadow entries, it's bailing out. But why all of a sudden did this break in the latest libc6? And is there a way to get the old functionality back? What the changes did is to stop merging adjunct passwords to the passwd database, and merge them in the shadow database instead. There is no new requirement for shadow entries. If you are not using adjunct password, no changes should have happened for you. As it doesn't work, it seems something has broken, we have to understand why. FYI, I have just done a NIS setup using the MERGE_PASSWD option, and only compat entries into /etc/nsswitch.conf, and I don't see this problem. I will need more informations to debug this: - Are you using adjunct passwords in addition to merged passwords? No. - As I understand, you have upgraded libc6 on both the NIS server and the clients. Can you please try to see if it also breaks if you upgrade only the clients? Yes it still breaks, when I upgrade just one of the clients. - Are you using nscd on the clients? Bug#567104: mpg321: Does not work without a controlling terminal
Hi, i think that mpg321-0.2.11-2 version resolves this problem by adding the -x option which enables xterm title setting. This is a better approach. You can download and test it from mentors.d.n. A mentor has to upload it to sid. Thanks for your time and effort giving away this patch. Best regards, Chris. Bug#565506: Confirmed: the git branch fixes the issue
Michel, Brice, I could certainly upload a new package with latest 6.12-branch git snapshot. That would surely solve the issue but the question is how many other issues will be introduced by uploading the newest git snapshot. We're talking about a stable branch, so this risk should be low. I understand. As I indicated earlier, I do not feel myself qualified to suggest a particular solution - whether just take the two patches or repackage the entire git snapshot. Either of them will obviously remove this issue and deciding whichever is better is up to you. Bug#562342: Bug #562342: polyorb: FTBFS: tests failed
Some of the tests of 2.6.0~20090423-4 just failed on the kfreebsd-amd64 buildd (they all passed in the previous build). Apparently all the test failures were due to: polyorb.utils.sockets: connect to 172.17.12.3 failed: [61] Connection refused The IP address of the host (fano.debian.org) appears to be 206.12.19.110 at the moment (not sure whether it is a static or dynamic address). Bug#479172: [PATCH] Ask the user for the package name and version if needed.
If there is no debian/changelog to find the source package name, and/or the upstream version was not given on the commandline, ask the user for them. The values guessed from the original tarball name are offered as defaults to the user. Previously, this guessed version was used without confirmation. The source package name is now always taken from debian/changelog or prompted for, even when it might not be used (when importing a directory instead of a tarball, for example). This makes the code more straightforward and less errorprone in the future. Bug#566351: libgcrypt11: should not change user id as a side effect
Ansgar Burchardt ans...@43-1.org writes: Hi, Simon Josefsson si...@josefsson.org writes: It can run in a separate process if nscd (glibc's name service caching daemon) is running. It would be nice if it was possible to configure it to fall back on something saner than invoking a setuid-binary when nscd is not available/working. That should work during boot too. Just an idea. /Simon -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

Bug#567104: mpg321: Does not work without a controlling terminal
package mpg321 severity 567104 normal merge 566544 567104 thanks Hi Chris, i think that mpg321-0.2.11-2 version resolves this problem by adding the -x option which enables xterm title setting. This is a better approach. You can download and test it from mentors.d.n. A mentor has to upload it to sid. Yup, your fix works as well (just tested it). You might want to consider taking the cleanup/renaming part of my patch still, though. Stupid that I missed the other bug report :-) Gr. Matthijs signature.asc Description: Digital signature
