I can confirm that the recent kernel update in 5.0.4 solved it for us. The
version is 2.6.26-21. I have reason to believe from looking at the changelog,
the nohz fixes are the reason why the new kernel works without any hangs.

I have Gajim set to mark me away after 5 minutes and not available after
6 minutes.
Strangely, even after an hour, it marked two of my accounts away (not
not available). One remained available. After unlocking the
screensaver on the machine, all three accounts were left in the same state.
