Bug#629492: cdrom: Installing on dual-processor PowerPC system (ex. QuickSilver PowerMac G4) installs non-SMP kernel

2011-06-07 Thread Andrew Peng
Package: cdrom
Severity: important
Tags: d-i

Installing a fresh base system on a dual processor PowerPC system, such as in
my case a QuickSilver PowerMac G4 with dual 800MHz CPU's will fail SMP
detection and instead install a non-SMP kernel by default.

Installing the SMP kernel metapackage after the system install is done detects
the dual-processor configuration normally.

Here is the system immediately after installation:
pengc99@baccus:~$ uname -r
2.6.32-5-powerpc
pengc99@baccus:~$

Now install the SMP kernel:
root@baccus:~# apt-get install linux-image-powerpc-smp
root@baccus:~# apt-get install linux-image-powerpc-smp
!-- lots of installing stuff here --!
root@baccus:~#

Now reboot and check kernel:
root@baccus:~# uname -r
2.6.32-5-powerpc-smp
root@baccus:~#

Each time I leave my KDE session with juk still playing, at next

2) one of the sound card (the unused one) is signaled as missing. It
does this till next reboot which straighten things.

Bug#629498: binutils: ld cannot find symbols in library dependents

2011-06-07 Thread Philip Ashmore
Package: binutils
Version: 2.21.51.20110523-1
Severity: normal

I've just uploaded v3c-1.8.2-02.
It builds just fine.

treedb-0.9.2-01, however isn't so fortunate.

You'll need to download both from SourceForge
http://sourceforge.net/projects/v3c/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/treedb/

I've put links to them at http://www.philipashmore.com/v3c/
for convenience.

I will attach a patch you will need to apply to treedb as I worked through
other problems,
detailed before the show stopper.

I used a library trick to allow developers to link against libv3c-1.8.so and
libtreedb-0.9-bare.so
which is to create an empty library that requires both.

libtreedb_@PACKAGE_API_VERSION@_la_SOURCES =
libtreedb_@PACKAGE_API_VERSION@_la_LIBADD = @treedb_BARE_LIBS@ @v3c_LIBS@

This used to work, but with automake/gcc/ld on Wheezy, it results in a static
library that's
a text file that contains a single line:

!arch

Adding an empty C file, empty.c that's er, empty, to the above solves this.

libtreedb_@PACKAGE_API_VERSION@_la_SOURCES = empty.c
libtreedb_@PACKAGE_API_VERSION@_d_la_SOURCES = empty.c

And the build can proceed.

The reason for this bug report is because of what happens in
build/v3c/2-cartwheel -
a show stopper.

Hi,

it seems to crash also under u-boot so I suspect the bootloader is
innocent here.

Bug#629276: NFS needs same dispensation to use DES as AFS

2011-06-07 Thread Sergio Gelato
* Brian May [2011-06-07 13:29:33 +1000]:
 Hello debian-devel,

What should I do with this bug?

I did build a version for unstable, but I am not convinced this change
 is needed for unstable.

Let me argue that it is still needed for the next Debian release. When
that comes out, squeeze will remain supported for another 12 months, and
any KDC serving an environment where Kerberized NFS is used on squeeze
hosts will need something like this. And that's even without considering
support for other distributions or operating systems, which may have
their own, possibly glacial paces for migrating to strong crypto.

The patch does not prevent the use of stronger enctypes, it just enables
the use of DES if requested (and if the service principal has a DES
enctype in the KDC database; one can always use del_enctype if need be).

I am doubtful it will get accepted in stable, because it isn't fixing
 a grave bug.

I am not sure it is appropriate for backports, because the change
 isn't in unstable.

 Thanks

Recent Heimdal KDC disables DES encryption types on the (valid) grounds that
they are too weak. An exception is made where the service principal is afs
since the work to upgrade AFS to support stronger crypto is still very much
  in progress.

Unfortunately, Kerberized NFS has a similar problem. Support for stronger
enctypes didn't make it into the Linux kernel until 2.6.35 (post-squeeze).
Until all NFS servers and clients have been upgraded to support stronger
enctypes, a site will want to enable DES enctypes for nfs service
principals. Here is a patch that does just that; I've successfully tested
it. I think it would be highly desirable to have this in squeeze; more
so, in fact, than in later releases since the need for DES support with
NFS service principals ought to decrease with time.

Without this patch, the KDC rejects AS requests that specify DES enctypes
with krb5_crypto_init failed: encryption type (1|2|3) not supported
(illustrating another oddity, namely that krb5_crypto_init() uses the
  same error message whether the enctype is unknown or known but disabled;
krb5_enctype_valid() has two distinct error messages) and TGS requests
result in Server (nfs/f.q.d.n) has no support for etypes (also in the
KDC's log). The client did have [libdefaults]allow_weak_crypto=true, as
shown by the fact that the AS and TGS requests asked for a DES enctype.

Hm, but that error message is unhelpful indeed.

Could you make a minimal, self-contained testcase? Since this is an
ld bug, that means an ld command line and a collection of the
compiled object files mentioned on that command line (including shared
libraries). You can get the command line for ld by running gcc with
the -v option, looking for a line mentioning collect2, and running
ld in place of collect2.

Thanks much and hope that helps,

Allright,

I have this issue since upgrading from etch/lenny a few days ago, after
removing lots of dust first;).
As far as I crawled goolge Intel 82845G/GL is a fairly old graphic card
(on board) with probobaly droped support from intel.

The relevant syslog comes here:

Most the times I can not do anything, while sometimes killing X-server
brings me back to hardcore-terminals.
Yet, after starting X/ gdm/ etc. from terminal leaves ne with a black
screen.. so reboot is only option.
I also noticed that this crash is likely to happen at log in/out to gdm
and when using latest LXDE and fluxbox..

My question: When I buy a cheap AGP card (about 16 or 64MB) will this
resolve the issue? as I beleave the fault is with the GPU. I like this
computer since Pentium 4 Celeron 128kb Cache and 756mb ram and 60GB HDD
makes it a usefulll workstation for office and programming.

Thanks for comments and please help me since this bug comes frequently
and renders my workstation completely useless.

Best Regards,

Adam

Bug#629498: binutils: ld cannot find symbols in library dependents

I've just uploaded v3c-1.8.2-02.
It builds just fine.

treedb-0.9.2-01, however isn't so fortunate.

You'll need to download both from SourceForge
http://sourceforge.net/projects/v3c/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/treedb/

I've put links to them at http://www.philipashmore.com/v3c/
for convenience.

I will attach a patch you will need to apply to treedb as I worked through
other problems,
detailed before the show stopper.

I used a library trick to allow developers to link against libv3c-1.8.so and
libtreedb-0.9-bare.so
which is to create an empty library that requires both.

yes, if a binary uses symbols from one of these libraries, the binary has to be
linked with these. That's caused by -Wl,--no-add-needed.

libtreedb_@PACKAGE_API_VERSION@_la_SOURCES =
libtreedb_@PACKAGE_API_VERSION@_la_LIBADD = @treedb_BARE_LIBS@ @v3c_LIBS@

This used to work, but with automake/gcc/ld on Wheezy, it results in a static
library that's
a text file that contains a single line:

!arch

Adding an empty C file, empty.c that's er, empty, to the above solves this.

libtreedb_@PACKAGE_API_VERSION@_la_SOURCES = empty.c
libtreedb_@PACKAGE_API_VERSION@_d_la_SOURCES = empty.c

And the build can proceed.

The reason for this bug report is because of what happens in
build/v3c/2-cartwheel -
a show stopper.

the linker error looks correct; I assume this is an issue with the build system.
adding a

should fix the issue.

Bug#629501: llvm-2.8-dev does not install libllvm2.8 on kfreebsd-i386

Hi llvm maintainers,

I am a bit confused by the llvm-2.8-dev package on kfreebsd-i386: It
exists, but does not depend on libllvm2.8 (which does not exist anyways
for kfreebsd-i386). This causes the haskell-llvm build fail on that
arch, preventing (among other things) the migration of Haskell to
testing:
https://buildd.debian.org/status/fetch.php?pkg=haskell-llvmarch=kfreebsd-i386ver=0.8.0.2-4stamp=1307412490

Are you sure that it is right that llvm-2.8-dev exists without
libllvm2.8 on kfreebsd-i386?

Thanks,
Joachim

Bug#604397: debian-policy: require build-arch and build-indep targets

still not converted to make usage of it. They would still run the same

One thought I had today was what will happen with packages using
either cdbs or dh. Both of these provide build-arch and build-indep
rules, and as a result both can build using those targets today
(though individual packages may of course be broken if they did
things in the wrong rules). However, each would require updating
individually to actually enable their use. Autodetection here would
 prevent the need for this.

It would not. Currently autobuilder always only install Build-Depends, so
'debian/rules build' has to work with only Build-Depends installed.

This means there has basically two cases for package having
build-arch/build-indep:
a) Packages do not have Build-Depends-Indep.
b) Packages have Build-Depends-Indep but the documentation is built in
binary-indep
instead of build-indep.

To get any advantage from this proposal, packages a) need to be changed to have
a proper Build-Depends-Indep line. Packages b) already provides the split
anyway.

Bug#629385: Request for TC to rule on a course of action for supporting build-arch

On Mon, 06 Jun 2011, Steve Langasek wrote:

 options:

  1) Implement support for calling 'debian/rules build-arch' in place of

 'make -qn'.[1]

  2) Implement support for calling 'debian/rules build-arch' with a fallback
to 'debian/rules build' by checking whether the output of the build-arch
target matches that of a dummy target.[2]

  3) Implement support for calling 'debian/rules build-arch' in place of
'debian/rules build' if a Build-Options field is set in debian/control
of the source package specifying that this target is supported.[3]

  4) Turn on direct use of 'debian/rules build-arch' on the autobuilders for
all packages in unstable and experimental immediately, with no fallback
if the target does not exist; requires a corresponding update to Policy
and mass updates to fix packages that fail to build as a result.

  5) Further Discussion

I suggest a supplementary option that combines 4 and 1. And I attach the
corresponding dpkg patch.

---
Turn on direct use of debian/rules build-arch unless the package seems
to be missing the target according to make -qn. In that case output a
warning that asks the packager to implement the required targets, but
fallback to using the build target.

The fallback to build and the make -qn auto-detection is temporary to
ease the transition but should dropped at some point (wheezy+1, or
wheezy+2). The policy should document that the targets must be supported.
---

Lucas, can you do a full rebuild with the packages below ?
http://people.debian.org/~hertzog/packages/dpkg-dev_1.16.1~buildarch.1_all.deb
http://people.debian.org/~hertzog/packages/libdpkg-perl_1.16.1~buildarch.1_all.deb

You should use a binary-only build (i.e. dpkg-buildpackage -B or -A for
packages which are arch: all).

I would like to know if it introduces new build failures, and
also how many packages have this warning:
dpkg-buildpackage: warning: debian/rules must be updated to support the
'build-arch' and 'build-indep' targets (at least 'build-arch' seems to be
missing)

grep just on debian/rules must be updated to support, the parenthesis
can vary between -B and -A. Also you can only see the warning if you use
-B or -A, with -b (the default), you can't generate it.

Bug#629503: cgmail: No checks if $USERNAME is not set

2011-06-07 Thread Mattia Monga
Package: cgmail
Version: 0.6.2-1
Severity: important
Tags: patch

cgmail refuses to do anything if the environment variable USERNAME is not set.
This is, however, not always the case. See also bug #265593. The problem could
be solved temporary by the user, by doing an export USERNAME=user, but a more
portable solution should be implemented. The attached patch uses Python
os.getuid to this end.

Bug#604397: debian-policy: require build-arch and build-indep targets

2011-06-07 Thread Steve Langasek
On Tue, Jun 07, 2011 at 09:39:59AM +0200, Bill Allombert wrote:
One thought I had today was what will happen with packages using
either cdbs or dh. Both of these provide build-arch and build-indep
rules, and as a result both can build using those targets today
(though individual packages may of course be broken if they did
things in the wrong rules). However, each would require updating
individually to actually enable their use. Autodetection here would
  prevent the need for this.

It would not. Currently autobuilder always only install Build-Depends, so
'debian/rules build' has to work with only Build-Depends installed.

This means there has basically two cases for package having
 build-arch/build-indep:
 a) Packages do not have Build-Depends-Indep.
 b) Packages have Build-Depends-Indep but the documentation is built in
 binary-indep
 instead of build-indep.

To get any advantage from this proposal, packages a) need to be changed to
have a proper Build-Depends-Indep line. Packages b) already provides the
 split anyway.

There are two benefits of this intended change: avoiding the downloading
and installation of heavy build-dependencies only needed for generation of
architecture-independent packages; and avoiding the build-time generation of
those architecture-independent packages. Existing packages that have
properly structured their debian/rules targets already for the second case
would get immediate benefit from autodetection, with no further changes.

For trying to solve this issue, I'm upgraded compiz* packages using the

problem still remain.

The only solution, actually, is to disable compiz.

Bug#612077: mirror submission for mirrors.serverhost.ro

2011-06-07 Thread Dan Nicolae

Hello Simon,

Sorry for the late response to your email. A lot of things had to be
done around here.
About the Debian mirror, indeed only the i386 and amd64 architecture
remain due to the space required by the mirror.

About using the ftp.ro.debian.org, I don't see the point in that. The
ideea of this mirror is to get the latest updates from the near outside
Romania upstream mirror. A Romanian mirror updating from another
Romanian mirror is kind of useless from my point of view.

The bandwidth allocated to this server is 10mbps outside Romania and
100Mbps Metropolitan/National local peers.

Best Regards,
Dan Nicolae

One uses it by clicking the wrench icon, choosing Tools, and then

Would you be interested in writing a README.Debian for inclusion

Somebody mentioned a cronjob with traffic on vnet-device would help

You probably need to set the arp_notify sysctl on the net device inside
the guest. This was fixed upstream and backported into the 2.6.32.32
longterm release which is in the Debian 2.6.32-31 package which was
recently added to Squeeze in a stable update.

Bug#629509: avahi-daemon-check-dns.sh do not honour comments in /etc/resolv.conf

2011-06-07 Thread Jonathan Michalon
Package: avahi-daemon
Version: 0.6.27-2+squeeze1
Severity: normal

The script at
/usr/lib/avahi/avahi-daemon-check-dns.sh
do not honour comments (#-starting lines) when using /etc/resolv.conf

This causes some delay on system shutdown (and not bootup) if you have
a line containing the searched pattern (127.0.0.1) like
#nameserver 127.0.0.1
in /etc/resolv.conf (which I had left after tests on DNS lags and caching).

BTW I wonder whether this script should not just be ran on interface up...
it seems it has nothing to do at shutdown.

Steps to reproduce:
  - add this line to /etc/resolv.conf:
#nameserver 127.0.0.1
  - run (as superuser): (it will shut down all your network connections !)
invoke-rc.d networking stop
  - notice the delay, you may run a 'ps aux' quickly and see the script runnning
because it tries to check your local DNS server which you have not

rules, and as a result both can build using those targets today

things in the wrong rules).

How ? Can you give an exemple ? autobuilders already do not install
Build-Depends-Indep.

Bug#624387: [PATCH] dfa: fix case folding logic for character ranges

2011-06-07 Thread Paolo Bonzini
* src/dfa.c (setbit_case_fold): Remove, replace with...
(setbit_wc, setbit_c, setbit_case_fold_c): ... these.
(parse_bracket_exp): Use setbit_case_fold_c when iterating over
single-byte sequences. Use setbit_wc for multi-byte character sets,
and setbit_case_fold_c for single-byte character sets.
(lex): Use setbit_case_fold_c for single-byte character sets.
---
At first I was going to say this:

You are using ru_RU.KOI8-R, which is a uni-byte locale, yet your
inputs (both stdin and the grep regexp) use the two-byte
   representation \xd0\9f for П, instead of the uni-byte \360.

But it fails even with the single-byte version.
So it is indeed a bug in grep, but at least this time
 it affects relatively few locales.

Here's the fix I expect to use and a test case to exercise it.

The bug affects all single-byte locales except ISO-8859-1 ones.
It is quite serious---the logic to map wide characters back to
bytes makes no sense.

The attached patch fixes it and does not regress high-bit-range,
while removing the debatable uses of wctob and checks for EOF. Ok
to apply together with your testcase?

Bug#629443: bitcoind: A Documentation upgrade is essential for operation

package bitcoind
retitle 629443 Bug#629443: please start daemon automatically by default
severity 629443 normal
thanks

On 11-06-06 at 07:30pm, richard wrote:
 1. The package summary should clarify that only bitcoind is included
and that the user must make separate provision if the bitcoin GUI
 client is desired.

Next packaging release will include in its long description an explicit
note that bitcoind provides daemon + command-line interface.

I find it inappropriate for the Debian package to document installation
of non-Debian software.

 2. If it is intended that Debian will provide bitcoind and bitcoin
(the GUI) as a single package then suitable guidance should be given.
If it is, for example, presently recommended to uninstall the Debian
package and to self-compile bitcoind and bitcoin from sources to
operate the GUI, some guidance should be given.

I find it unsafe, and therefore inappropriate to suggest, use of
upstream precompiled code or local custom recompilation of code.

 3. The manual pages for bitcoind and bitcoin.conf are useful and
complete. They provide guidance on running the bitcoin daemon via a
 terminal and commandline.

Thanks for the heads up :-)

Some recommendations on howto startup and shutdown the daemon would
upgrade this part of the package in line with the features normally
 provided by Debian via init.d.

Acknowledged!

This is only part of the bugreport not yet addressed - bugreport
adjusted accordingly.

 4. A (brief) discussion on the security of the bitcoind binary and
package vs compiling from source would enhance the package.
As far as I can tell, while it is desirable from a security point of
view for the user to compile at least the GUI (bitcoin) himself, this
is presently beyond the ability of the novice Debian user.

I disagree: It is outside the scope of this package to elaborate on
risks in implementing same (or better) using different approach than
official Debian packaging.

...and for posterity, I also disagree with your statement above: It
might be desirable from a UX (user experience) POV, but I see no
security improvement in novice users fumbling with compilation of code!

 5. In the /doc/bitcoind/README file the Setup instructions recommend
that four binary files be run. This seems unnecessary, as the package
 provides a binary - /usr/bin/bitcoind.

README is upstream notes. README.Debian is Debian-specific notes.

Thanks to your comments here, I now realize that upstream README
contains nothing helpful in a Debian context, and next packaging release
will skip installing the README to avoid confusion.

Thanks a lot for your input!

Hi Paolo,

Thanks for following through on this.
At first glance (I'll look carefully today)
this looks like the right approach.

However, I've gone ahead and pushed my patch and test case,
since it does solve the problem at hand, and I have not seen
inputs that make that code misbehave.

Thanks to both for helping fixing this bug.

Brian, you can probably tear down the ondrej account now, but if you
can just keep it inactive and re-enable it again if needed, it would
be great help when debugging the GSSAPI issues.

Thanks again to both,

I wonder if this might have something to do with changes due to the recent

This was also due to a bug in gssapi.c. See:

The segfaulting problem is fixed for me after applying the patch tied to

Bug#629239: compiz: Missing window control buttons

2011-06-07 Thread Gergely Nagy
For trying to solve this issue, I'm upgraded compiz* packages using the
the experimental version (0.9.2.1+git20110226.f059fae9-4) but the
 problem still remain.

The only solution, actually, is to disable compiz.

As this is related to #629207, I'd echo what was discovered there:
downgrading metacity to testing's version solved the problem.

There's something fishy going on between compiz and metacity, it seems.

Bug#629508: ITP: robust-http-client -- Robust HTTP client library for Java

Shouldn't this be named like -java or java- ?

Bug#629511: can report invalid data as valid in untaint mode

2011-06-07 Thread Damyan Ivanov
Package: libdata-formvalidator-perl
Version: 4.66-2
Severity: important
Tags: security squeeze sid wheezy upstream
Forwarded: https://rt.cpan.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=61792

If there is a previous match in $, the validation routine erroneously
returns success:

$ perl 'EOF'
use Data::FormValidator;

bug =~ /b/;

my $result = Data::FormValidator-check(
{ a = 'b' }, # input data

optional = [ 'a' ],
constraints = {
a = qr/a/, # RE that must match
},
},
);
print $result-success, \n;
EOF
1
$

The following patch fixes the bug by correcting the check for a
successful match.

%

+if ($untaint_this  $match) {
 # pass the value through a RE that matches anything to untaint
it.

I plan to push this via squeeze-updates, unless the security team
considers it suitable for a DSA.

Bug#629498: binutils: ld cannot find symbols in library dependents

adding it to the linker command line
 /v3c/dev/autobook/treedb/build/v3c/.libs/libtreedb-0.9-bare.so.902: could not
 read symbols: Invalid operation

The last error message is used by 'gld${EMULATION_NAME}_try_needed' to
indicate that 'bfd_link_add_symbols' failed.

More precisely: we have finished opening input files, so ld lists
DT_NEEDED entries of DSOs listed on the command line. For each
such entry, ld will discard it if it was not really needed (because
redundant or because none of its symbols are referenced and
--as-needed is in use); otherwise, it finds the library and includes
its symbol table in the linker hash table.

The unfortunate message comes because bfd_link_add_symbols has no
way to return a meaningful error so it just prints a message itself
and returns an error code. And the list of error codes is kind of
crazy:

System call error - i.e., see errno
Invalid bfd target - i.e., unrecognized target name, or:
trying to do something that doesn't
  work for this target.
File in wrong format- i.e., malformed input, or:
  operation doesn't make sense for
  this kind of file
Archive object file in wrong format
- i.e., archive contains objects for
  the wrong target
Invalid operation - operation doesn't make sense for
this situation or kind of file
Memory exhausted- why not System call error, errno == ENOMEM?
No symbols - symbol table is empty
Archive has no index; run ranlib to add one
No more archived files
Malformed archive
File format not recognized
- could not pick a target (e.g., bad magic
  bytes)
File format is ambiguous
- matched more than one non-default target
while we were trying to autodetect
Section has no contents
- The output section does not have the
  SEC_HAS_CONTENTS attribute, so nothing
  can be written to it.
Nonrepresentable section on output
Symbol needs debug section which does not exist
Bad value
File truncated
File too big
Error reading %s: %s
#Invalid error code

So what actually happened here? Invalid operation is definitely
wrong. ld *could* read the symbols in libtreedb-0.9-bare --- it just
didn't want to use them. I guess a better error message would be

libtreedb-0.9-bare.so.902: could not get symbols: Refusing to traverse
DT_NEEDED link to resolve symbols

or something like that.

Will think more.

Shouldn't this be named like -java or java- ?

So robust-http-client (the upstream project name) will become the source
package name; it will produce two binary packages:

  librobust-http-client-java
  librobust-http-client-java-doc

Hope this explains the naming a bit more clearly and how it relates to
-java

Bug#619918: [acpi-support] getXconsole break in asus-touchpad.sh

I try to run /etc/acpi/asus-touchpad.sh script manually from console and

Do you run it as root?

 get message:

Couldnt get a file descriptor referring to the console

Sorry but I cannot find this message anywhere in the acpi-support package.
Please find out which statement produces this output.

 Then I comment string:

 getXconsole

 and all work good.

Are you sure you're not running /etc/acpi/asus-touchpad.sh under the same user
you use for X? getXconsole is needed to make sure root can connect to your X
server.

I think we need to fix getXconsole. How I can help you to do this?

Feel free to debug getXconsole. It's in /usr/share/acpi-support/power-funcs.

Bug#625603: bug script does not work

2011-06-07 Thread Luk Claes
Any reason why you don't allow connections from unpriviledged ports on
localhost to portmapper? This might very well be related to the other
 bug you filed...

No. I was not aware that I did, but you are right, I had NFS services
without
LOCAL in /etc/hosts.allow. But now I changed it and even commented out
the NFS
entries from /etc/hosts.allow completely and it still does not work.

 Now I just have:

 shambhala:/etc tail -8 hosts.allow
 ALL: LOCAL
 sshd : ALL
 #portmap: LOCAL 10.0.0.0/16 172.21.0.0/16
 #mountd : LOCAL 10.0.0.0/16 172.21.0.0/16
 #lockd : LOCAL 10.0.0.0/16 172.21.0.0/16
 #statd : LOCAL 10.0.0.0/16 172.21.0.0/16
 #rquotad: LOCAL 10.0.0.0/16 172.21.0.0/16

Any hints where else to look?

So the bug script still does not work?

Doesn't remapping the key suffice to get it working via the standard way of
your GUI? The acpi-support package will not touch rc.local making the patch you
sent useless if I don't misunderstand something here.

Do the keys without remapping create ab acpi event? You can try this with

Good, I'll start preparing the package in the next weeks and contact
you as soon as they're ready.

A quick update on this:

I've been talking to upstream and the problem now is that basically
Grilo doesn't have a stable API/ABI yet, so I'm not sure if it makes
sense to start packaging it so early.

Is there a policy for libraries with no stable API in Debian?

Hi,

Christoph fl...@in.tum.de (07/06/2011):
If there is any more information on the error I can provide, please
 let me know!

it might be worth checking what happens with upstream master. We're
still lacking a doc on how to do that, but basically, cloning our
repository, adding a remote pointing to upstream, merging
upstream/master into debian-unstable (and optionally running dch to bump
the debian version) is basically what you need to do.

If that still fails with upstream master, please open a bug:
  http://intellinuxgraphics.org/how_to_report_bug.html

and tell us about the bug number/URL.

Good luck.

Bug#504132: What's the status of libapache-mod-fastcgi in Debian?

2011-06-07 Thread Sandro Tosi
Hi Tatsuki Taku,
thanks for the work you did on libapache-mod-fastcgi! but recently, it
seems this package is lacking a bit of love :)

We'd like to use it at work, but we're facing several issues:

1. it doesn't retry to select() in case of EAGAIN, tracked at #504132[1]
2. mod_deflate and mod_fastcgid don't play together, tracked at #509116[2]
3. after the last upload, the package was not built on all the
architecture it was built before, as visible on the PTS[3] or directly
on the RT excuses[4]. and that prevents its migration to testing that
in return prevents its upload to backport.debian.org

[1] http://bugs.debian.org/504132
[2] http://bugs.debian.org/509116
[3] http://packages.qa.debian.org/liba/libapache-mod-fastcgi.html
[4] http://qa.debian.org/excuses.php?package=libapache-mod-fastcgi

1. and 2. have both patches and could be NMUed if needed (or you can
upload a new revision :)) while 3. is a bit more complicated.
Following [5] (keeping in mind [6]) you can read that The inclusion
on the autobuild list can only be requested by the maintainer of the
package - we are not adding a package to be autobuild by requests of
anyone except the maintainer. so it's only you that can ask for such
autobuilding possibility (I didn't ask if this requirement can be
relaxed). Could you please follow those steps and ask for
libapache-mod-fastcgi autobuilding? another solution could be a
partial (arch) removal from unstable of the outdated archs, but I'd
like to use it as a last resort solution.

[5] http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2006/11/msg00012.html
[6] http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=612563#10

Please note that this is a work project, so I'm feeling a little bit
of pressure and I cannot wait that long :) I can NMU or prepare an
internal package, but I'd like much more to find a distribution
solution so that others can benefit too. Please let me know as soon as
you can, but it might be that in about a week I'll start to move this
forward.

Thanks a lot in advance,

Bug#545139: Re: Bug#545139: fixed in akonadi 1.3.1-4

2011-06-07 Thread Modestas Vainius

21:59, Magnus Holmgren rašė:

On lördagen den 30 april 2011, you stated the following:

Changes:
  akonadi (1.3.1-4) unstable; urgency=low
  .
* Add patch 04_socket_location.diff to allow akonadi-server to run when
HOME is mounted to the network filesystem (Closes: #545139). Thanks to
Ansgar Burchardt for the patch.

After upgrading to that version, kmail stopped working because it (or rather
libakonadi-kde4, or libakonadiprivate1?) still tries to use the old socket
path.

To be honest, your statement is conflicting. kmail *stopped* working
because it still tries to use *old* socket path. It is either kmail
worked before (with old path) or it didn't (hence you need new path).
Sorry, but I don't understand.

What have I missed regarding how clients find the socket? (No socket
path is defined in ~/.config/akonadi/akonadiserverrc, so the new default is
used.)
Akonadi is supposed to create a socket in /tmp only if it can't do that
in $HOME.

Bug#629515: offlineimap: re-syncs some of my large folders (archive, sent)

2011-06-07 Thread Lars Wirzenius
Package: offlineimap
Version: 6.3.3-3
Severity: normal

I'm a fresh user of offlineimap. I have, on my IMAP server, only
a handful of folders, and they're all tiny (up to a few dozen
messages, at most), except for to: Archive and Sent, each of which
has more than 20 thousands mail.

Several times now, offlineimap has decided to re-sync the entire
folders. This takes quite a while, and uses quite a lot of bandwidth,
enough so that when this happens, I can't use offlineimap unless I'm
at home (and then preferably only at night, when bandwidth is
cheaper for me).

It seems that something deletes the mails locally, since the files
are gone from the Maildir when I look at the problem. The problem
has occurred between two consecutive runs of offlineimap, without
me touching the Maildirs at all (a few minutes between the runs).
As far as I know, the only thing touching them is offlineimap.
(Unless it's a very weird bug in ext4 or something...)

I am using stable, but with offlinemap backported from testing/unstable
(manually rebuilt it without changes), to fix a problem (though I now
forget what it was).

I tried enabling debug logging, but since I don't talk IMAP, it's
pretty much useless for me. Is there something I can do to debug
this? (Not attching the log I have from one of the instances where
the problem occurs, since it seems offlineimap logs may include
passwords.)

please make sure that you either use gobjc-4.6 explicitly, or that

 gnustep-base/1.22.0-1 currently build-depends on gobjc (= 4:4.6). My

 Is that good enough?

no, for that case, you need to use gcc-4.6 as the driver. If you want to do
this, maybe make the change in gnustep-make and let the gnustep-make package
depend on gcc-4.6.

Using the stock Debian john package, my Core i7 920 system can check

I also see AVX and XOP variants in the makefile. My preferred solution
would be to build and ship all available variants under different names
and let the user choose which one to run.

Bug#629522: ITP: machina -- polyphonic MIDI sequencer based on finite-state automata

2011-06-07 Thread Alessio Treglia
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Alessio Treglia ales...@debian.org

* Package name: machina
  Version : 0~svn3366
Upstream Author : David Robillard d...@drobilla.net
* URL : http://www.drobilla.net/software/machina/
* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: C++
Description : polyphonic MIDI sequencer based on finite-state automata

Machina is probabilistic (i.e. very small machines can produce interesting
non-repetitive output) but also capable of deterministically representing
any piece of “discrete note music” - or anything in between. There is also
experimental support for evolving machines (using a Genetic Algorithm) to
play similar (but not identical) music to an existing piece (from a MIDI
file or real-time MIDI instrument input).

Is there a policy for libraries with no stable API in Debian?

Normally you need a stable ABI, so if library versioning is not
handled by upstream then you handle the so versioning.
Debian-specific so versioning is best avoided though...

I suggest putting it in experimental for now No guarantees there,
and people who want to test it can easily install it. :)

Bug#611284: FTP-Client fails with FTP proxy and option -n

2011-06-07 Thread Johannes Schmidt-Fischer

Hello Mats,

sorry for the delay in testing your patch and answering whether this patch
works for connecting to a ftp server via ftp proxy.

I'm glad to inform you that the patch works very well. There is no longer any SYST command sent to
the ftp proxy server prior to sending it the information which server it should connect to (you can
see this easily by means of the -d switch). Since there is a SYST command after logging
using the user command the ftp client gets the information it needs at that point of
time.

IMO this patch could be added to the netkit-ftp sources or at least the Debian patch file in future versions
of that package. For standard uses (no -n option specified) there is no difference in the manner
the ftp client communicates with the ftp server, and when the option -n is given the first
command that connects the client to a file tree at a ftp server is the user command which causes
to retrieve the system informations from the server after the successful login.

Regards,

Johannes

torsdag den 12 maj 2011 klockan 17:24 skrev Johannes Schmidt-Fischer detta:

Hello Mats,

when I start the FTP client and connect to the FTP proxy I have no chance
to specify the FTP server I want to connect to prior to getting the input
prompt from the FTP client and entering the user command with the
appropriate informations.

I had a transparent ftp-proxy in mind.

An open invitation is now made to all interested participants
to build the client executable using the attached little patch.

Do test it in all the use-cases you encounter, and preferrably
some more! Not all servers react identically to a SYST command
issued before a successful USER command.

I can not guarantee that this suggestion will go into production,
but for evaluation purposes I need to know that nothing is broken,
while at the same time attempting to close this bug in a transparent
way for all use-cases we have identified.

Respond to this BTS thread, not to any personal address, as I am
subscribed to this thread, or rather to the package observer!

Thank you in advance for your reports and efforts.

Bug#623095: tslib: 623095: possibly a kernel issue

2011-06-07 Thread Timo Juhani Lindfors
package libts-0.0-0

Hi,

if I read 8613e4c2872a87cc309a42de2c7091744dc54d0e correctly it seems
that it does not modify any parts of the API that tslib actually uses.

Wouldn't it then be safe for tslib to allow both EV_VERSION 0x010001 and
0x01?

and setbit_case_fold_c for single-byte character sets.

Thanks again for working on this.
Your mention of case folding implies that this fixes a bug unrelated
to the one I have just fixed. My patch affected code that was guarded
by !case_fold.

If your patch does indeed fix a case-folding bug,
I would really like to see a test case.
Grep is at a point in its development that any bug
fix commit really should be accompanied by a test suite
addition, if at all possible.

All that said, your patch looks like a fine improvement.

Ahh. Perfect. I see that as I was writing this you have
posted a test case (and a nice optimization!). Thanks again!

The suggestion below looks like it still applies to your latest.

Bug#612818: emacs documentation (emacs manual, elisp manual) does not appear in the 'info' list

2011-06-07 Thread Luis Henriques
Package: emacs23
Version: 23.3+1-1

Actually, this is not a bug. Take a look at [1] -- Debian considers Emacs
documentation to be non-free.

Anyway, you can install the documentation by adding the 'non-free'
component to your sources.list and installing the emacs23-common-non-dfsg
package.

I guess this bug can be closed...?

Bug#629526: aptitude: Extend f (forget) to provide for forgetting parts of the new-package list

2011-06-07 Thread Edward Welbourne
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.6.3-4
Severity: wishlist

I mostly keep my systems on stable. When I upgrade to a new version,
the New Packages folder in aptitude has thousands of entries. I am
not going to succeed in reviewing all of those before the next time my
nightly apticron does an update and potentially adds entries to the
folders I thought I'd already reviewed; unless I start at the
beginning each day (in which case I'll never reach the end) I'll miss
some entries. It would be nice if there were some way of marking the
entries I *have* reviewed (and decided whether to install) as no
longer new without forgetting all the ones I *haven't* yet reviewed.

For example: by analogy with f to forget all, F could forget the
newness of the item currently selected; that may be a single package
or it may be a folder. In the latter case, naturally, the contents of
that folder are to be marked as no longer new. (Obviously, if F is
already in use to mean some other thing, pick some other suitable
key.)

This would make it possible to do a rolling review of all new packages
when I upgrade; each day I'd review some of the outstanding new
packages and F these; the next day, apticron has updated the package
list, so some new entries may have appeared in the folders I F'd last
time; because I did F what I have reviewed, only these new entries are
present in those folders, so I don't have to wade through what was
already there to notice them. While it may take a long time to wade
through thousands of packages, this at least makes the task feasible
without suppressing everything that might update the package list for
the duration of the time it takes to review them all.

As it is, I either forget thousands of new packages without every
reviewing them or never get round to reviewing the thousands of
packages new in the new release - either way, I don't actually get to
know about fancy new things someone has taken lots of time and effort
to make available to me.

Bug#629527: apt: should warn (or emit an error) if symbolic and code-names mixed in sources.list

2011-06-07 Thread Matthew Vernon
Package: apt
Version: 0.8.10.3
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

For most users, most of the time, mixing symbolic (stable, unstable) and
code-names (lenny, squeeze) in sources.list is a mistake, and will lead
to trouble. I've encountered this problem on other peoples' systems a
few times now. Clearly, there are times when more experienced users will
want to do this, but I believe this to be the exeption rather than the
rule.

Accordingly, I'd like to suggest that apt emits a warning (or maybe an
error) if it finds symbolc and code-names in the same sources.list file.
Obviously, you'd want an associated apt-config rune to say no, really,
I know what I'm doing, but I think this would save our less experienced
users a lot of pain.

Regards,

Matthew

Bug#613300: preliminar fuse4bsd package available, PLEASE TEST

2011-06-07 Thread Robert Millan
2011/6/7 Axel Beckert a...@debian.org:
To help to fix all the bugs it blocks, it should at least provide
fuse-utils (or even make a dummy package as some packages depend on a
versioned fuse-utils like e.g. sshfs) and provide the same interface
 (i.e. /usr/bin/fusermount and /sbin/mount.fuse). I suspect we'll
probably need wrapper scripts to provide these interfaces.

We could have a fuse4bsd source package, then a fuse-utils
binary with the userland utility (mount.fusefs), and another
binary for the kfreebsd module.

The latter will have to be versioned (e.g. fusefs-kmod-8.2-1-amd64)
unless/until someone comes up with a better way (port dkms?).

Bug#623425: [hurd] killall: ftbfs, fails to run

2011-06-07 Thread Jonathan Nieder
Hi,

About a month ago I sent two patches to killall. The more important
of the two was:

Jonathan Nieder wrote:

 Patch 1 switches to a buffer of size strlen(path) + 1, which
should be large enough to fit a symlink target that matches and to
determine whether the actual target is longer. The buffer was missing
a null-terminator and tested using strcmp, so patch 1 switches to
 memcmp while at it.

since readlink is not required to (and on some platforms does not even
if it has room to) NUL-terminate its buffer.

Is there anything I can do to help move this forward (for example, do
you want test cases, or should I put up a tree based on the upstream
git repository)?

If it's just life being busy, I can understand, and sorry for the
noise. None of this is particularly urgent; I'd just rather get
everything in order while it's fresh in my memory.

Thanks for taking care of procps and psmisc. It's nice that these
programs still just work™.
