I ended up putting in all those changes to the rules file to fix some
unrelated (that is: unrelated to adding in tests) issues with the
resulting deb :)
If these changes are too much, I'd be happy to revise the patch.

I confirm the bug, but will fix it another way:
The volume value MUST be = 0. Negative values do not make sense
here, so I'll be more defensive and will add some
assert(volume = 0.0);
where needed
