I haven't been able to reproduce this (Debian/testing, gnome desktop).
If you've configured to use compiz, it's possible that's the cause.
If not, other clues would help.

fault at all. The network-manager package is breaking
/etc/network/interfaces, causing the lo interface to not get an IP
