Commenting out (require 'gnome) from /etc/X11/sawfish/site-init.d/00debian.jl
silences the startup complaint for me, so it seems that's the only place it
was coming from on my end too. Thanks!

This was reproducible every time, but only if you used both the kernel
in stretch and systemd in stretch.
Because this issue has been fixed in systemd, I'm closing the bug.
