Bug#357588: Test case required
Le 4782 Septembre 1993, Sylvain Le Gall a tapoté: Hello, Hello, I am trying to reproduce the bug you desrcribe in http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=357588. But i don't use unicode in my term, so i am not really aware of what should be done ! Could you give me some hints on how to state the presence of the bug ? (maybe a vt-is-UTF8 command or something similar), Well, just enable UTF-8 in /etc/environment: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8 /etc/init.d/console-screen.sh will setup your console in UTF-8 at boot time. At login time (with fbgetty), accents work fine, but when logged in I must use unicode-start to make the console unicode again (accents became curious glyphs) I haven't the problem with getty. Bug#381389: Reproduceable, and not smart-notifier's fault
Hi, On Thu, 05 Oct 2006, Brian Sutherland wrote: I reproduced the installation problem, but didn't try the build leading up to it with the latest debhelper. I wanted to prepare a patch for this, but I really get 2.4 and not current when building smart-notifier with python 2.4... Yeah, I get the same. But I will note that the smart-notifier binary in the archive has Python-Version set to current and build depends on =5.0.37.2. Yes but it doesn't bring much as the 5.0.37.2 version is nowhere (and thus not on buildd). But you should at least rebuild the package with a current debhelper to fix #383099. Bug#391115: [Pkg-sysvinit-devel] Bug#391115: While upgrading to 2.86.ds1-31 mount error and exit status 32
[Boniforti Flavio] Any help about this issue? I suspect you are using a kernel without tmpfs support. This will break the system in subtle ways. The oldest and most obvious way is probably that POSIX shared memory functions will fail as /dev/shm/ is not a tmpfs, and a recent addition is the /lib/init/rw/ mount point just introduced to make sure the early boot system have a writable area to store state information when the coldplug hardware events arrive before the root file system is checked and mounted read-write. I am a bit confused, though, because in version 2.86.ds1-30 a test to check if tmpfs was supposed was added to the postinst (grep -E -qs tmpfs\$ /proc/filesystems), and I expected this to avoid the upgrade problem. Can you tell me the output from that command on your system? Friendly, -- Petter Reinholdtsen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#391150: Want personalized menus (that means Start menu only shows what you use and rest is hidden)
Package: kde Severity: wishlist It would be great if KDE provided personalized menus just like in Windows 2000 (http://www.activewin.com/tips/win2000/1/2000_tips_9.shtml). In short, this means that after you've used the Start menu enough, the menu collapses to only show the items you use. The items you never use are hidden. When you click the little arrow at the bottom of the menu, or when you wait 5 seconds, the hidden items are shown. Do you also think this would be a nice option to have? Bug#388967: suphp-common: [annoying_notes] Abuse of debconf note(s)
As announced in http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2006/09/msg00630.html, this bug report is part of a mass bug filing campaign about the abuse of debconf templates of type note. Can you help me on this, I've already done some changes in the past (#324635). This note seems really important for me and is only displayed during an upgrade from 0.6.0-1. What is the version in sarge? If the note is about warning users for possible problems, you might consider turning it into an error template...of course, only after appropriate checks in the config file. What is the current code to display it? Also, what is the current wording of the template (I'm not online now so can't download the source to check)? -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#391149: Standard license agreement page should say Next instead of I Agree
Package: nsis Version: 2.06-3 I am involved with a project which uses NSIS to produce a Windows installer. The standard MUI license agreement page (http://nsis.sourceforge.net/File:NSISScreenshot2.png) says: == License Agreement ... blah ... If you accept the terms of the agreement, click I Agree to continue. You must accept the terms of the agreement to install $APP_NAME. [ Back ] [ I Agree ] [ Cancel ] == IMO, this is probably confusing for ultra-newbies. I define ultra-newbies as people who don't read anything onscreen and all do is look for a Next button and click it. I think that an easier page for such people to use would be as follows: == License Agreement ... blah ... Click the Next button if you accept the agreement above. Bug#385878: k3bsetup; cdrecord - wodim transition
Given that cdrecord has been replaced by wodim, perhaps we should be talking about wodim instead. If we are already looking at wodim per http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=390083 then references in the dialogues need to be patched as well. At the moment k3bsetup is asking for my root password and then telling me it's not right. In the past it appeared to succeed with the su, but still failed to actually change the permissions on /usr/bin/cdrecord. Setting /usr/bin/wodim suid stops k3b from trying to fire up k3bsetup, but it doesn't find the drive, and is thus unusable. Gnomebaker seems to be working fine. I argue against removing k3bsetup as most, especially new, users will have trouble adding themselves to the cdrom group, let alone finding out that they need to. Perhaps k3bsetup could, perhaps optionally, add the user to the cdrom group instead of setting suid on the binaries. k3b Version: 0.12.17-2+b1 wodim Version: 5:1.0~pre4-1.1 regards Mark -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. [Atsuhito KOHDA] Hi, I'm not so sure if this is really a bug of initscripts but I got the following message every time I did df df: `/dev/.static/dev': Permission denied This is probably the result of either of the directories being inaccessable for the user running df. Can you try this: ls -ld /dev /dev/.static /dev/.static/dev It should pinpoint which directory point is blocking df from accessing the mount point. I suspect it is the /dev/.static directory. I hadn't noticed this myself, but this is a good reason to avoid listing the mount point /dev/.static/dev in /etc/mtab. Bug#391156: wodim: can't write a cdrom anymore
Package: wodim Version: 5:1.0~pre4-1.1 Severity: normal I've tried to burn a cdrom using wodim, but I get an error almost right away or after burning for a short while. This burner has worked fine with earlier versions of cdrecord for a couple of months ago when I last used it. I tried to compile the last version of the old cdrecord, but there seems to be problem with that also, could also be that xcdroast gives wodim specific parameters, I don't know. The same problem occurred on an i386-based laptop so I don't think it is a hardware problem, even if wodim/cdrecord tells me so. I've tried with different discs and different iso-files. Bug#391071: partman-auto-crypto: No confirmation before hard-drive wiping
On Thu, October 5, 2006 2:07, Frans Pop said: I personally would prefer to consistently delay disk selection to a second level in _all_ cases and explain what the next step will be in the description; something like: example ... Automatic - use the largest continuous free space Automatic - erase entire disk Automatic - erase entire disk and set up LVM Automatic - erase entire disk and set up encrypted LVM Manual /example Strange, it sounds familiar...oh yes...it's what I've been suggesting all along [1]. So I think its safe to say that we fully agree. I can whip up a patch or two once I have confirmation that this is the final decision on this issue. This may need to be revised again when we can offer RAID1, but that depends on the implementation and could probably be solved by mentioning that option in the description. In which way would the scheme need to change for RAID1? It would probably be a could idea to repeat the fact that existing data will be erased after selecting a method that does and we need to add an extra confirmation dialog before the partition table is written when using LVM anyway (see #368633). Yup BTW. I also noticed that with Use the largest continuous free space there is currently no indication of what disk will actually be used or how big the free space is. It is of course kind of implied (whichever disk has the largest free space), but IMO it would be kind of nice to tell the user before it is done. Perhaps we should add the select disk dialogue to the Use the largest continuous free space choice as well...with the modification that we only present disks with free space? -- David Härdeman [1] http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2006/08/msg00854.html -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#390514: [Pkg-cryptsetup-devel] Bug#390514: cryptsetup doesn't work with SSL encrypted keys
On Sun, October 1, 2006 18:29, Stephan Seitz said: I used the script /usr/share/doc/cryptsetup/examples/gen-ssl-key to generate a encrypted key, decrypted it and added it with luksAddKey. Then I changed /etc/crypttab to the path of SSL encrypted key and added the keyword ssl. But /etc/init.d/cryptdisks couldnât activate the partition. It should hopefully be able to do so if you use the option keyscript=/lib/cryptsetup/scripts/decrypt_ssl instead of just ssl, more explanation below. 1. The function decrypt_ssl is available in /lib/cryptsetup/cryptdisks.functions as well as in /lib/cryptsetup/scripts/decrypt_ssl. It seems, the first is used. Both functions are different. 2. The function in /lib/cryptsetup/cryptdisks.functions begins like the other one, but then asks for a second passphrase to decrypt the previously decrypted key. This contradicts with gen-ssl-key which only uses one passphrase. Iâve changed the function to only ask for one passphrase like in /lib/cryptsetup/scripts/decrypt_ssl (see patch). Actually the key decryption stuff is in a bit of flux. The keyscript option is a recent addition to the /etc/crypttab file, and it is going to deprecate both the ssl and gpg options. Now, there is a decrypt_ssl script already in /lib/cryptsetup/scripts/, but it uses a different method compared to what the old ssl option did (the old method wasn't very good btw). I've already committed some changes to cryptsetup SVN repo which adds a decrypt_old_ssl script (which works like the old ssl option) in addition to decrypt_ssl. For now, I'd suggest you either: wait for the new release, help test the SVN version (once I've had time to do some more work on it), or use the keyscript option in /etc/crypttab instead of the ssl option. 3. Neither decrypt_ssl (nor decrypt_gpg) are protecting the passphrase against spaces by using quotation marks (see patch). I'll make sure its fixed in the /lib/cryptsetup/scripts/... 4. You are using âread -sâ to read the passphrase from the command line (silent mode), but the option -s only works with bash. If /bin/sh is linked to dash, it doesnât work. I had to change /etc/init./cryptdisks to use /bin/bash instead of /bin/sh. I'll take a look at it 5. Now it works. The next step would be solving the problem how a normal user could use cryptsetup to activiate a encrypted partition or an encrypted removable device. I think Gnome already has support for mounting luks-encrypted removable storage (e.g. USB keys). The gnome-volume-manager changelog suggests its been available since the beginning of this year. -- David Härdeman -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#391094: packaging errors remove old apache2 but prevent install of apache2.2
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi Moshe, it's not that serious problem. You can solve by simply doing a: # dpkg --force-overwrite -i /var/cache/apt/archives/apache2.2-common_2.2.3-1_i386.deb That should work. Secondly, the package apache2.2 doesn't appear because it simply does not exist. It's apache2 with version 2.2.3-1. And, by the way, you are lucky you had only this problem: in fact, I can't use PHP, because there's not a libapache2-mod-php5 for this version of apache (just upgraded today). Subject: runit: retains a controlling terminal; ctrl-c on tty1 halts/reboots system Package: runit Version: 1.6.0-1 Severity: important Hi, under some (unknown) circumstances, runit(8) retains a controlling tty: USER PID %CPU %MEMVSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND root 1 0.0 0.010420 tty1 Ss+ 09:07 0:00 runit This has the important side effect that the getty-1 service is unable to set its own controlling tty to tty1, and that pressing ctrl-c in the login shell started by getty-1 will deliver the SIGINT to runit so that a ctrl-alt-del event is triggered. This doesn't happen on all computers I run runit on, but it happened on at least two (one amd64, one i386). Both run runit 1.6.0-1. Curiously, if I first start Jabref and then compiz with the --replace option, it works fine. There were remnants of four: tetex-base tetex-bin tetex-doc tetex-extra all version 3.0 However, after purging the problem with installing [EMAIL PROTECTED] remained the same. Norbert suggested to delete /etc/texmf/fmt.d/00tex.cnf and run update-fmtutil: update-fmtutil: cannot read /etc/texmf/fmt.d/00tex.cnf I don't think this was a good advice (or maybe he meant 00tetex.cnf? 01tetex.cnf? So it seems I have to wait for further suggestions or texlive versions before installation succeeds. First of all, you need a 00tex.cnf. I attach one. Second, the attachments you made in the other mail show that it is 99postinst.cnf that causes your continued problems. Quoting from it: # # # /etc/texmf/fmt.d/99postinst.cnf # # This file has been generated by tetex-bin's postinst script. # teTeX no longer uses /etc/texmf/fmtutil.cnf for its configuration, # but rather a file in /var/lib/texmf/web2c that is generated from # configuration files in /etc/texmf/fmt.d. # # The postinst script detected that your old fmtutil.cnf contained # lines that you seem to have added manually. In order to include those # lines in the generated file, they have been extracted to this file, # /etc/texmf/fmt.d/99postinst.cnf. # # You can add changes here, or in a new file in this directory, see # the manpage of /usr/sbin/update-fmtutil(8). Note that if there are two entries # for a format, the second wins - because this file has number 99, # it's entries will always be last # # And the non-commented entries in it are: mf mf - mf.ini mfw mfw - mf.ini pdftex pdftex language.datpdftex.ini omega omega language.datomega.ini All these entries for mfw and mf come from teTeX in woody. In other words, during the upgrade from woody to sarge, you have chosen to keep the settings for these four formats at their old values. So this part of the bug seems to be not a bug, but a particular local configuration. You can safely delete 99postinst.cnf, after that texlive should configure fine. Bug#391175: mozilla-thunderbird: line-wrapping limit changeable on the fly
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Package: mozilla-thunderbird Version: 1.0.2-2.sarge1.0.8b.2 Severity: wishlist Thunderbird mail composition has the very usefull feature of wrapping lines after, e.g., 75 characters. I suggest it should be possible to change the number of characters on the fly, after already having started to compose the message. For me, 75 characters is usually just what I want. A noteable exception being when I write Debian bug tracking messages, such as this. This message was composed mainly by a copy-and-paste operation of some text, that has been generated under control of the reportbug programm. If you scroll further down, you can see it has some lines describing this system and setup. Those lines have been wrapped in the paste process, but should not have been. As a workaround, I can save the message, change the wrapping for all messages, and reopen the message, and repeat the paste. Norbert suggested to delete /etc/texmf/fmt.d/00tex.cnf and run update-fmtutil: update-fmtutil: cannot read /etc/texmf/fmt.d/00tex.cnf I don't think this was a good advice (or maybe he meant 00tetex.cnf? 01tetex.cnf? I suppose he meant 00tetex.cnf, so any stupidity is my fault, not his. Since I had no 00tetex.cnf and I wasn't sure which file Norbert meant, I moved 00tex.cnf away, ran update-fmtutil, and then moved 00tex.cnf back. Just to make sure that this doesn't solve the problem. So no harm done by this check. First of all, you need a 00tex.cnf. Thanks, very kind of you. I attach one. Second, the attachments you made in the other mail show that it is 99postinst.cnf that causes your continued problems. Thanks, this solved the problem. All these entries for mfw and mf come from teTeX in woody. In other words, during the upgrade from woody to sarge, you have chosen to keep the settings for these four formats at their old values. Not knowingly. As a user I have no idea to which settings the setup program is referring, and of course I want to keep my formats. If you see a message like this, then you assume that the installation is aware of the installed formats and programs and will upgrade them, but you wouldn't expect that the installation procedure takes an old configuration file and tries to build the formats regardless of whether the programs/formats are installed or not. So this part of the bug seems to be not a bug, but a particular local configuration. You can safely delete 99postinst.cnf, after that texlive should configure fine. In my opinion it is a bug of tetex to leave a configuration file behind that refers to non-installed programs (the list of formats is no user setting but internal bookkeeping), and it is a bug of texlive (at least of its transition capabilities) to pay attention to this file. I'm not sure whether there is an easy way to avoid this trap without breaking something else, but I'm sure that there will be more people like me having an old 99postinst.cnf: In my case, I never wanted to install tetex, neither on woody nor on sarge. But because of dependencies, some tetex-packages were installed nevertheless, and then afterwards deleted and even purged by me, but this file remained. So perhaps texlive installation should try to cope with this particular situation, e.g. by renaming or deleting 99postinst.sh (with some heuristic checks of the contents). Bug#391182: debian-installer: Impossible to boot linux 2.6 i386 image on Opteron (daily build 3 oct 2006 and d-i rc3 with 2.6 kernel)
Package: debian-installer Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Hi, Yesterday I installed an opteron at work. This opteron must run in a 32 bits environnement (binary compatibility issue). I downloaded d-i daily build (03 oct 06) and d-i rc3 with 2.6 kernel. Once the initrd expended at boot time, nothing happened. Hence an Opteron cannot be installed with 2.6 i386 kernels. To fix this issue I installed an image with a 2.4 kernel (i386 d-i rc3 2.4 and sarge installer) and booting went well. I do not know if this issue was known or not. Feel free to downgrade the severity if you belive that it should not be RC. However, I guess that our users might want to install debian 32 bits on an Opteron Cheers, -- Pierre Machard -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble?
