Bug#383604: zd1211-firmware: files at the wrong location for kernel tree's zd1211rw
I confirm this bug. It looks like zd1211 firmware files are in wrong place if you use linux kernel 2.6.18. I have wireless A-Link Wl54USB stick. When I plugged it into USB-port, firmware was not loaded because driver was not able to find it. This package installs firmware in /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware, but zd1211 driver in kernel searches it from /lib/firmware/zd1211. Note that also names of firmware files are wrong. Here is a quick temporary workaround: # ln -s /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware /lib/firmware/zd1211 # cd /lib/firmware/zd1211 # ln -s zd1211-WS11Ub.fw zd1211b_ub # ln -s zd1211-WS11UPh.fw zd1211b_uph # ln -s zd1211-WS11UPhm.fw zd1211b_uphm # ln -s zd1211-WS11UPhR.fw zd1211b_uphr # ln -s zd1211-WS11Ur.fw zd1211b_ur When I did that my A-Link WL54USB stick started to work. I'm not sure but you probably should do this too: # ln -s zd1211-WS11Ub.fw zd1211_ub # ln -s zd1211-WS11UPh.fw zd1211_uph # ln -s zd1211-WS11UPhm.fw zd1211_uphm # ln -s zd1211-WS11UPhR.fw zd1211_uphr # ln -s zd1211-WS11Ur.fw zd1211_ur -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#400675: kernel-patch-openvz: patch still not applying cleanly
Hi again Do you know if there will be more updates to the kernel after -8? If so I need to be prepared as that will probably break this patch. The version you are referring to (028test007.1) applies against 2.6.18-8. Bug#406438: This is TOTALLY BROKEN behavior
On Sunday 21 January 2007, Nathanael Nerode wrote: As noted in the merged bugs, this breaks all theming and all configuration of kdm. The Control Center module for kdm is completely broken by this; so are the packages kde-kdm-themes and kdmtheme. well.. the only thing the change does is that it adds a 'override' dir where different packages can drop a file to override kdm settings, mostly the default settings. Purging these packages (desktop base - or some of the cdd packages) makes the 'override' files dissapear. This is a totally unacceptable change to have right before etch releases. Please come up with a better implementation then. However, purging desktop-base does fix the problem. I'm not sure whether this is a serious bug on kdm or a serious bug on desktop-base. You can decide, but this is definitely *not* acceptable to release etch with. you can just remove the files in /etc/default/kdm.d/ to remove the kdm theming. On my machine, I have a 10_desktop-base which provides the info about the default debian kdm theme. I actually think this implementation is better than the one we had before: Shipping a custom configuration file in /etc/kde3/kdm - now we ship the default. /Sune -- How may I click the login? It wasn't reported for any other .pdf, so I guess this only hits very few users. It is a crash, yes, but it does not make evince unuseable. We will ship a version of evince 0.4 with etch, as newer versions are part of Gnome 2.16, which is also not part of etch. well ... evince is quite unstable in my system and it seems that this is not only one pdf. For example i often experience some breakage on exit (ok, missed the bug report) and have to kill evince's pid. Well, quite unstable is not something I can fix. If you are more specific, there are maybe single issues that could be fixed. Maybe this bug has an acceptable patch to it. This causes bad usability. No, there is no patch. I haven't even verified yet that it is fixed in the newer upstream versions, but even if it is, there is no specific changelog entry for this. Also, this is probably a bug in libpoppler, which does the .pdf rendering, and not in evince. Sorry, but it looks like I don't have the hardware to track this down, yes, it is a mac partition table issue. There where actually two bugs, one which i fixed, and was long fixed in ubuntu but the fix didn't go back to debian until i investigated, and the other which is not in parted, but in partman, and is still open. It is possible to test this on any hardware, but you would need a second disk if your firmware/bios is not able to boot from mac partition tables, like i believe is the case for PReP boxes. This can also be tested on plain x86 boxes with a second disk. My believe is that since mac partitions used to not have the RAID flag, that partman somewhere has some explicit test for x86 partitions, and sets the RAID flag only in those cases, or something. I will try to reproduce his on pegasos and its amiga partition tables, which are in the same case as the mac partitions. partman actually *ERASES* the raid flag set by hand by parted, which is rather strange, and hints strongly at some problem in partman-md (but also possibly mirrored in partman-lvm, which has a similar flag setup). My two thoughts: 1. Is this the only problem building Debian packages? I would have thought the different model, including permissions, etc would mess up the Debian package. 2. Is it possible to get find to autodetect the file system, and use -noleaf only as required? Maybe get it to look for . and .. and if it can't find them, automatically use -noleaf. Embedding filesystem specific changes like this into every package would seem to be the wrong solution, IMHO. -- Brian May [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#407837: gtk icon cache transition problems

If they had paid heed to that or sent me a debhelper patch to review before deploying it, this could have possibly been avoided.) The icon cache use has been discussed several times with the Debian GNOME Team before any work started on that for Ubuntu and there is no mistake which has been done or to avoid. That was clear from those discussions than pkg-gnome was not wanting to use the current cache implementation and that people are busy enough to not work on that at the moment. The Ubuntu Desktop Team on the other side wanted to get the icon cache used, has no problem with the current implementation and was fine rebuilding the packages installing an icon to update the cache. There was no point then for the Ubuntu team to send you patches for something that the Debian desktop people don't want to use nor to talk again about a topic we debated several times already, we decided to do the work to show how it works for Ubuntu and then to send the patches to Debian with some feedback and let you make your own decision from there Cheers, Sebastien Bacher -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#402014: defoma, fontconfig: integration is broken, brokes updates of font packages
tags 402014 etch-ignore thanks I'm going to go out on a limb here and tag this bug as non-RC for etch. The only case where this has been a concrete problem so far was for a particular font package which had a broken version uploaded into the archive, where upgrading that package didn't fix the cache. In the common case, I don't think we have to worry about broken fonts in stable in the first place, so clearing out caches from them needn't be release-critical either. It would be nice to have these packages all playing together well for lenny -- and even for etch, if things come together in time -- but the status quo doesn't seem to be all that bad. Bug#407905: installation-report: boot fails with encrypted root over raid
Package: installation-report Severity: normal i installed a computer yesterday, using the weekly images from the 15. january. i didn't use the graphical installer. one of the points of this installation was to try encrypted root over raid, which almost worked out od the box, which is really sweet. the finished system doesn't boot, since a file /conf/conf.d/cryptroot is missing in the initramfs, it should contain the information about the crypted partition (source= and target= lines are needed, the rest is ok in my case). i did work my way around this using the cryptopts karnel parameter. if you have any questions about the setup, just mail. oh, and i noticed that the wiki says encrypted swap is currently not working because it can't generate the entropy. this seemed to work for me. cu robert -- Robert Lemmen http://www.semistable.com signature.asc Description: Digital signature

If it breaks that easily, it hardly seems releasable -- how do we protect against it being broken by security updates? the patch is very big (about 700k) and applies to huge amount of places in the kernel. From 2.6.19 somekind of hook functionality is in place as far as I understand, but for 2.6.18 it is not possible to use that. I do not know if it solves all the problems though. The problem have arized everytime the kernel team change from 2.6.18 to 2.6.18.3 and then to 2.6.18.6. I do not think a problem have arized when just doing minor updates, but I do not know for sure and it depends on the update. But security updates may need to be coordinated. I assume that same problem can arize for vserver and xen patch, but those patches are a part of the kernel source nowdays. The solution could be to handle the drop target first and extract the desired files after that. - -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-3-k7 Locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) (ignored: LC_ALL set to de_DE.UTF-8) Versions of packages file-roller depends on: ii bzip2 1.0.3-6 high-quality block-sorting file co ii gconf2 2.16.0-3 GNOME configuration database syste ii gzip 1.3.9-2 The GNU compression utility ii libatk1.0-01.12.4-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libbonobo2-0 2.14.0-3 Bonobo CORBA interfaces library ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-10 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.2.4-4 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libfontconfig1 2.4.2-1 generic font configuration library ii libgconf2-42.16.0-3 GNOME configuration database syste ii libglade2-01:2.6.0-4 library to load .glade files at ru ii libglib2.0-0 2.12.6-2 The GLib library of C routines ii libgnome2-02.16.0-2 The GNOME 2 library - runtime file ii libgnomeui-0 2.14.1-2 The GNOME 2 libraries (User Interf ii libgnomevfs2-0 2.14.2-4 GNOME virtual file-system (runtime ii libgtk2.0-02.8.20-3~macmenubar-1 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libnautilus-extens 2.14.3-7 libraries for nautilus components ii liborbit2 1:2.14.4-1libraries for ORBit2 - a CORBA ORB ii libpango1.0-0 1.14.8-5 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpopt0 1.10-3lib for parsing cmdline parameters ii libx11-6 2:1.0.3-4 X11 client-side library ii libxcursor11.1.7-4 X cursor management library ii libxext6 1:1.0.1-2 X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii libxfixes3 1:4.0.1-5 X11 miscellaneous 'fixes' extensio ii libxi6 1:1.0.1-4 X11 Input extension library ii libxinerama1 1:1.0.1-4.1 X11 Xinerama extension library ii libxrandr2 2:1.1.0.2-5 X11 RandR extension library ii libxrender11:0.9.1-3 X Rendering Extension client libra ii tar1.16-2GNU tar ii unzip 5.52-9De-archiver for .zip files ii zip2.32-1Archiver for .zip files Versions of packages file-roller recommends: ii arj3.10.22-2 archiver for .arj files pn lzop none(no description available) ii mkisofs9:1.1.2-1 Dummy transition package for genis ii p7zip 4.43~dfsg.1-2 7zr file archiver with high compre ii rpm4.4.1-14 Red Hat package manager ii sharutils 1:4.2.1-15shar, unshar, uuencode, uudecode - -- no debconf information -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFFtItfYfUFJ3ewsJgRAoSJAJ0Tvzi/omyoK3da9M0TPpQyU3Al2ACglwJL Jw8Uh9HZVHIxJo15IqoNVpo= =Nt3y -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#407908: evolution: alarm-notify crashes after typing in the notify window
Package: evolution Version: 2.6.3-3 Severity: normal Often I am typing into some window when the alarm-notify window pops up. In these cases some of the typed characters go into the notify window. Bug#407798: xserver-xorg-video-i810: Cursor disappears after resuming from suspend-to-ram
Drew Parsons wrote: Johannes wrote: Since some time (unfortunately I don't remember the exact version of the change), the cursor disappears after resuming from suspend-to-ram. It's still possible to use the cursor (clicking things on the desktop or in the menu if you manage to find them), but the cursor itself isn't there anymore. Yeah, the bug is tabled at #390913, #407798 and #407798. Sorry for the duplicate, seems like I didn't read carefully enough. This can only be resolved through a full system restart No, as mentioned in #390913 you should find you can recover the cursor by stepping over to console and back again (Ctrl-Alt-F1 followed by Alt-F7). Unfortunately this is not true for the system here - the cursor doesn't show up when switching to console and back again, neither when X is restarted. This is one of the things we hope that the future release of X.org (X11R7.2 or 7.3) will fix, via the modesetting branch. This won't help you if use etch, but after etch is released you could try the new version of xserver-xorg-video-i810-modesetting once we get around to updating it. It will likely appear first in experimental before we move it into unstable. I'm looking forward to test this, thanks. Oh yeah - one thing I forgot in the initial report: thanks a lot for all the time you keep investing in building these packages! Keep up the good work! Bug#400675: kernel-patch-openvz: patch still not applying cleanly
Hi Steve, See my comments below. Steve Langasek wrote: If so I need to be prepared as that will probably break this patch. Why is this patch so fragile? If it breaks that easily, it hardly seems releasable -- how do we protect against it being broken by security updates? I suggest that a. A workaround is to have kernel-image-openvz, the same as Linux-VServer does. Thus people will not run into troubles. b. A solution is to coordinate Debian security updates with OpenVZ kernel team. Thus OpenVZ team can timely (i.e. before you release) prepare a patch which is surely applicable to your kernel flavour. Answering your question -- there were two fails, I looked through .rej files and found their causes: One failed hunk in net/ipv6/udp.c -- looks like the patch from 2.6.18.5 is not applied to linux-source-2.6.18-7: * http://tinyurl.com/2n9554 Six failed hunks in net/ipv4/ip_tables.c -- same, looks like a few patches from 2.6.18.y-stable are not applied to linux-source-2.6.18-7. I see at least the following ones: * http://tinyurl.com/2l5sae * http://tinyurl.com/38bgxa * http://tinyurl.com/2wx9jz I have just checked that after applying four patches linked above, kernel-patch-openvz-028test007.1 applies cleanly on top of linux-source-2.6.18-2.6.18-7. Not exactly good practice for an init script. I can get caudium to work in this box if i recompile caudium with debug... Doesn't your original report say that rebuilding with debug gives a SIGABRT? Well, I'm not a very experienced developer, but I did get a working caudium at several times (when compiling with debug, without debug alwas fails) but I realize that compiling several times to get a working binary is not ok, but maybe a way to find the bug... Bug#407921: lxr-cvs: genxref produces MySQL errors when used with --reindexall
Package: lxr-cvs Version: 0.9.4.0.20061001-2 Severity: normal The option --reindexall to genxref produces MySQL errors when a MySQL 5.0.24a-Debian_9-log database server is used as a backend. $ genxref --url=http://localhost/lxr --allversions --reindexall produces: BD::mysql::st execute failed: Unknown table 'lxr_indexes' in MULTI DELETE at /usr/share/perl5/LXR/Index/Mysql.pm line 334. DBD::mysql::st execute failed: Unknown table 'lxr_useage' in MULTI DELETE at /usr/share/perl5/LXR/Index/Mysql.pm line 335. DBD::mysql::st execute failed: Unknown table 'lxr_files' in MULTI DELETE at /usr/share/perl5/LXR/Index/Mysql.pm line 338. The cause is incorrect syntax in the library file /usr/share/perl5/LXR/Index/Mysql.pm. The statements for delete_indexes, delete_useage, delete_status and delete_files uses syntax which isn't working and also appears to be incorrect syntax according to the MySQL manual. The statement used is something like delete from ${prefix}indexes using ${prefix}indexes i, ${prefix}releases r where ... If changed to the following it works: delete from i using ${prefix}indexes i, ${prefix}releases r where ... The error has been in upstream for years and according to the bug tracker of MySQL that was incorrect synatx already for MySQL 4.0. Apparently nobody uses --reindexall or doesn't care about the errors. Or is this not reproducible by others than me? The syntax used also produces an identical error when used from the MySQL client shell. Bug#407925: evolution: when out of disk space, create dialog storm which freezes the box
Package: evolution Version: 2.6.3-3 Severity: critical Justification: causes serious data loss While i was compiling stuff, i got a call and was updating an apointment i had in the evolution calendar. The compilation caused my /home to be full, and as thus, evolution was unable to update the apointment. But instead of opening a dialog informing me about the issue, and let me free some space, it created a dialog storm, which left the box fully frozen (it was a 1Ghz powerbook, with 512MB of ram), leaving me unable to move away from evolution, unable to switch to a VT console, unable to even kill X with the ctr-alt-del combo (well, maybe due to apple thinking there is no need for both backspace and del, not sure), leaving me no choice but to reboot the machine. This caused the loss of all the not-yet-saved data, thus the severity. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: powerpc (ppc) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-3-powerpc Locale: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages evolution depends on: ii dbus 1.0.2-1simple interprocess messaging syst ii evolution-common 2.6.3-3architecture independent files for ii evolution-data-server 1.6.3-3evolution database backend server ii gconf22.16.0-3 GNOME configuration database syste ii gnome-icon-theme 2.14.2-2 GNOME Desktop icon theme ii gtkhtml3.83.12.1-2 HTML rendering/editing library - b ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.17-1 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libatk1.0-0 1.12.4-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libaudiofile0 0.2.6-6Open-source version of SGI's audio ii libavahi-client3 0.6.15-2 Avahi client library ii libavahi-common3 0.6.15-2 Avahi common library ii libavahi-glib10.6.15-2 Avahi glib integration library ii libbonobo2-0 2.14.0-3 Bonobo CORBA interfaces library ii libbonoboui2-02.14.0-5 The Bonobo UI library ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-8GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.2.4-4The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libcamel1.2-8 1.6.3-3The Evolution MIME message handlin ii libdbus-1-3 1.0.2-1simple interprocess messaging syst ii libdbus-glib-1-2 0.71-3 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libebook1.2-5 1.6.3-3Client library for evolution addre ii libecal1.2-6 1.6.3-3Client library for evolution calen ii libedataserver1.2-7 1.6.3-3Utility library for evolution data ii libedataserverui1.2-6 1.6.3-3GUI utility library for evolution ii libegroupwise1.2-10 1.6.3-3Client library for accessing group ii libesd0 0.2.36-3 Enlightened Sound Daemon - Shared ii libexchange-storage1.2-1 1.6.3-3Backend library for evolution cale ii libfontconfig12.4.1-2generic font configuration library ii libfreetype6 2.2.1-5FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgconf2-4 2.16.0-3 GNOME configuration database syste ii libgcrypt11 1.2.3-2LGPL Crypto library - runtime libr ii libglade2-0 1:2.6.0-4 library to load .glade files at ru ii libglib2.0-0 2.12.4-2 The GLib library of C routines ii libgnome-keyring0 0.6.0-3GNOME keyring services library ii libgnome-pilot2 2.0.15-0.1 Support libraries for gnome-pilot ii libgnome2-0 2.16.0-2 The GNOME 2 library - runtime file ii libgnomecanvas2-0 2.14.0-2 A powerful object-oriented display ii libgnomeprint2.2-02.12.1-7 The GNOME 2.2 print architecture - ii libgnomeprintui2.2-0 2.12.1-4 GNOME 2.2 print architecture User ii libgnomeui-0 2.14.1-2 The GNOME 2 libraries (User Interf ii libgnomevfs2-02.14.2-4 GNOME virtual file-system (runtime ii libgnutls13 1.4.4-3the GNU TLS library - runtime libr ii libgpg-error0 1.4-1 library for common error values an ii libgtk2.0-0 2.8.20-3 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libgtkhtml3.8-15 3.12.1-2 HTML rendering/editing library - r ii libhal1 0.5.8.1-6 Hardware Abstraction Layer - share ii libice6 1:1.0.1-2 X11 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libjpeg62 6b-13 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libldap2 2.1.30-13.2OpenLDAP libraries ii libnm-glib0 0.6.4-6network management framework (GLib ii libnotify1

Bug#407799: KDM and desktop-base
Just wanting to follow up on a comment from Bastian Venthur in #406438: Bastian Venthur wrote: As the maintainer of kde-kdm-themes I don't think that desktop-base brakes my package. I'm happy that it finally enables the new KDM theme by default for the masses. The problem is that it doesn't just enable the new KDM theme by default, it forcefully enables it for everyone, ignoring all the KDE Control Center settings, without giving a hint on how to disable it. If this behavior is indeed intended or there isn't any other way to get The Holy New KDM Theme deployed for the masses, and the solution for those who don't want it is to remove desktop-base, then the package is clearly misnamed! Perhaps desktop-base-for-dummies or default-debian- desktop-base (along with a clarified package description) would be better alternatives. pgpryAwQkaTGi.pgp Description: PGP signature
Bug#396944: exim4 giving me problems again (#396944)
Hello Marc, I monitored the next two or three upgrades after the problem I was having disappeared, all went well so I removed the flag which was causing exim to spew debugging info out during the install... a few more upgrades later and the problem has reappeared. Exim is running, has no pid file in /var/run/exim, there is a non-empty error log, and I have not touched anything to do with exim4 manually (it has all been the packages scripts triggered by upgrades). :-/ Got any ideas for a script to monitor the health of exim4 on this box? Do you want all the logs? Aside from looking for a running exim4, existing pidfile, and the error log, I haven't touched anything... direct me. :-) - Bruce -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. But currently, only web spam bots do that, not e-mail spam bots, do they? Since Mailman is a high-profile mailinglist server, I think that the simple need to click such a link would be implemented quite quickly. If implemented upstream, this feature would reach Debian stable about 1,5 years from now the earliest, and there's a good chance that bots have caught up by then. I do not think that the implementation effort offsets the benefits. Thijs signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Bug#407689: tasksel: Please consider adding a Development task for Etch
The problem with adding a development task has always been, and continues to be, that people do not use the same tools for development, and that there are no good defaults beyond basic C-style development tools. mind you a similar thing applies to say the file server task, there are at least 3 different types of server that someone could want that would fit the file server discription and its not at all clear which ones will be installed. I personally belive that tasksel needs a major overhaul and is practically useless in its present form, what i think is really needed is a set of categories each with a number of entries so you'd say have a desktop category (with gnome desktop, kde desktop, xfce desktop etc), a webserver category (with basic websever, lamp webserver etc), a fileserver category (with samba, nfs and ftp options), a development category (with basic development, kernel development, debian package development, java development etc) and so on. This is why #266702 is still open. The fact that those default C development tools are no longer in standard still doesn't make development a sensible task. It's not the same class of thing as running a web server or using a desktop, both of which can be accomplished well, if not perfectly for everyone, with a predetermined list of software. maybe development is the wrong name but even a task that just installed build-essential and the kernel headers would imo make things a lot easier for those stuck with unusual hardware or wanting to compile software that is not packaged off the bat (its not at all obvous to newbies that the package they need to make basic compilation work in one step is called build-essential and its pretty horrible getting compilation to work one package at a time).

Bug#407517: [SAMBA3][PATCH] Use more talloc in auth
This patch derives from debian bug 407517, where Jamie is seeing smbd memory use skyrocket, when used from IIS. I'm concerned about two things: memory leaks of server_info in closed sessions (and leaks of other attached things), and the specific behaviour of the getpwnam() cache. I've adjusted the cache to use talloc_unlink(), which I think gives more exact semantics for what is wanted here. An in the auth code, I've tried to start using the new talloc(), to ensure we can't loose memory. This passes the 'make test' of Samba3. I don't know if it solves Jamie's problem however. (I just took a pot shot at some likely suspects). Thoughts? Thanks for explaining. - tetex will be dropped in lenny, all dependencies in etch should have an alternative on the respective texlive packages. For sbaz, this probably means tetex-bin | texlive-latex-base, tetex-extra | texlive-fonts-recommended but actually there's no simple rule for tetex-texlive mappings. You have to try, maybe it needs more packages. If it builds documentation in other languages than english, it needs the respective texlive-lang-* package. I guess in that case it'd be okay to make texlive-latex-base and texlive-fonts-recommended the default alternatives instead of the tetex equivalents? - finally (but this has nothing to do with Debian packaging): times.sty is obsolete (since about 10 years), mathptmx.sty should be used instead.
