Bug#407889: patch to make ggcov work with gcc-3.4 package

2007-01-22 Thread Peter Schueller
Package: ggcov
Version: 0.8-2
Severity: normal

I am using gcc-3.4 and ggcov -D all complained about an unknown version and
could not display anything.

I checked out the latest cvs and patched the sources to allow processing of
gcc-3.4 coverage data from debian (gcc version 3.4.6-4 from package gcc-3.4)

This is the output of cvs diff:

RCS file: /cvsroot/ggcov/ggcov/src/cov_file.C,v

I wanted to send this directly to the maintainer (gnb @ users.sourceforge.com)
but the email did not work so I send this to you as this also affects debian.

Thank you for your efforts!

Kind Regards,

Peter Schueller

Bug#383604: zd1211-firmware: files at the wrong location for kernel tree's zd1211rw

2007-01-22 Thread Mika Hanhijärvi
I confirm this bug. It looks like zd1211 firmware files are in wrong
place if you use linux kernel 2.6.18.

I have wireless A-Link Wl54USB stick. When I plugged it into USB-port,
firmware was not loaded because driver was not able to find it. This
package installs firmware in /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware, but zd1211
driver in kernel searches it from /lib/firmware/zd1211. Note that also
names of firmware files are wrong.

Here is a quick temporary workaround:

# ln -s /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware /lib/firmware/zd1211
# cd /lib/firmware/zd1211
# ln -s zd1211-WS11Ub.fw zd1211b_ub
# ln -s zd1211-WS11UPh.fw zd1211b_uph
# ln -s zd1211-WS11UPhm.fw zd1211b_uphm
# ln -s zd1211-WS11UPhR.fw zd1211b_uphr
# ln -s zd1211-WS11Ur.fw zd1211b_ur

When I did that my A-Link WL54USB stick started to work.

I'm not sure but you probably should do this too:

# ln -s zd1211-WS11Ub.fw zd1211_ub
# ln -s zd1211-WS11UPh.fw zd1211_uph
# ln -s zd1211-WS11UPhm.fw zd1211_uphm
# ln -s zd1211-WS11UPhR.fw zd1211_uphr
# ln -s zd1211-WS11Ur.fw zd1211_ur

Bug#400675: kernel-patch-openvz: patch still not applying cleanly

2007-01-22 Thread Ola Lundqvist
Hi again

Do you know if there will be more updates to the kernel after -8?

If so I need to be prepared as that will probably break this patch.

Regards,

The version you are referring to (028test007.1) applies against 2.6.18-8.
If you want to apply against the 2.6.18-7 in etch you need to use the
  version
in etch, and that is 028test006.1.

028test006.1 isn't in testing anymore, it was replaced by 028test007.1
because of this RC bug. If you're certain that 028test007.1 works with -8,
please re-close this bug report, because we aren't going to be releasing
 with -7.

I have laptop-mode running, maybe it has something to do with it?

I doubt. The machines in question here at our side are dedicated server and
thus not running in laptop mode. ;)

Bug#407892: /etc/init.d/lisa start fails silently

2007-01-22 Thread David Liontooth
Package: lisa
Version: 4:3.5.5-4

If lisa is running and you type /etc/init.d/lisa start, it fails silently.
An error message saying lisa is already running, or a forced restart, would be
very useful.

Bug#407890: Torcs can invalidate preferences.xml if , , or are used as controls.

2007-01-22 Thread Emmet Hikory

Package: torcs
Version: 1.2.4-2
Tags: patch

The torcs XML writing code does not check for invalid characters when
saving preferences.xml, although entities (lt;, gt;, amp;) are
properly parsed when reading the file. If these charactes are used
for controls, torcs crashes due to problems parsing the XML.

Please find attached a patch which addresses this issue, generated in
response to a bug reported to Ubuntu
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/torcs/+bug/4736).

I just realised that beep-media-player doesn't close itself when it
should, instead it just backgrounds itself. I found out this when (after
a few starts and stops of the player) applications started crashing on

This behaviour can be reliably reproduced on my system with this
 sequence:

 1) make sure there is no running instance of the player:
 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ killall beep-media-player
 beep-media-player: no process killed
 2) start the player:
 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ beep-media-player
 3) start playing a song and close the player while is playing (through
the graphical interface) - this will result in music still being played
 - BUG!
 4) CTRL+Z in the console

Definitely not reproducible here. When I click the X in the corner of the
GUI, the process exits. Likewise if I choose 'quit' from the menu.

What arch? I am using amd64 (on an Intel Core 2 Duo).

Because it causes unexpected behaviour (doesn't die when it should
terminate) and thus occupies memory making unrelated software not start
I think this is bug should be critical.

Even if the bug is downgraded (is at least important), Etch should not
ship the software in such a broken state.

Even if this bug was reproducible, I don't see how a process not exiting
 should ever be critical.

As I said, unrelated software do not start since they are killed by the kernel
due to lack of resources (taken by the running instances of bmp running in
the background).

Bug#406438: This is TOTALLY BROKEN behavior

As noted in the merged bugs, this breaks all theming and all
configuration of kdm. The Control Center module for kdm is completely
broken by this; so are the packages kde-kdm-themes and kdmtheme.

well.. the only thing the change does is that it adds a 'override' dir where
different packages can drop a file to override kdm settings, mostly the
default settings.
Purging these packages (desktop base - or some of the cdd packages) makes
the 'override' files dissapear.

This is a totally unacceptable change to have right before etch releases.

Please come up with a better implementation then.

However, purging desktop-base does fix the problem. I'm not sure whether
this is a serious bug on kdm or a serious bug on desktop-base. You can
decide, but this is definitely *not* acceptable to release etch with.

you can just remove the files in /etc/default/kdm.d/ to remove the kdm
theming.
On my machine, I have a 10_desktop-base which provides the info about the
default debian kdm theme.

I actually think this implementation is better than the one we had before:
Shipping a custom configuration file in /etc/kde3/kdm - now we ship the
default.

release team hat offThis is in no way RC for evince. It wasn't
reported for any other .pdf, so I guess this only hits very few
users. It is a crash, yes, but it does not make evince unuseable. We
will ship a version of evince 0.4 with etch, as newer versions are
part of Gnome 2.16, which is also not part of etch.
well ... evince is quite unstable in my system and it seems that this is
not only one pdf. For example i often experience some breakage on exit
(ok, missed the bug report) and have to kill evince's pid.

Well, quite unstable is not something I can fix. If you are more
specific, there are maybe single issues that could be fixed.

Maybe this bug has an acceptable patch to it. This causes bad usability.

No, there is no patch. I haven't even verified yet that it is fixed in
the newer upstream versions, but even if it is, there is no specific
changelog entry for this. Also, this is probably a bug in libpoppler,
which does the .pdf rendering, and not in evince.

How is this a false positive? The messages you cite do include headers

Thank you very much, Joachim. This bug is fixed in 1.0.3-1 (not yet
released) because I had another similar report several weeks ago.

I am trying to solve the upgrade problem (viewcvs-viewvc). Then I
will
release the new version.

Thank you for your bug report,

Ender.

Bug#392764: Can't reproduce on PowerStack, MAC partition issue only?

 Hi,

I tried to reproduce this bug on my Motorola PowerStack II (PPC prep),
but did not succeed. I've used the d-i daily build from 2007-01-19,
netinst iso and booted the netinst kernel over TFTP (yes, I know this
isn't supported, but my bandwith doesn't allow a full netinstall).

During manual partitioning, I created two RAID partitions:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /proc/partitions
 major minor #blocks name

8 08891556 sda
8 1 16033 sda1
8 2 489982 sda2
8 34184932 sda3
8 44192965 sda4
9 04184832 md0

Which is a brain-dead setup with only one disk and a RAID1 on two partitions:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ df -h
FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
 /dev/md0 4.0G 390M 3.4G 11% /
 tmpfs 62M 0 62M 0% /lib/init/rw
 udev 10M 44K 10M 1% /dev
 tmpfs 62M 0 62M 0% /dev/shm

I haven't seen any failure, which suggests that the problem only shows up
on MAC partition types (the PowerStack uses PC-style partitions).

Sorry, but it looks like I don't have the hardware to track this down,

yes, it is a mac partition table issue. There where actually two bugs, one
which i fixed, and was long fixed in ubuntu but the fix didn't go back to
debian until i investigated, and the other which is not in parted, but in
partman, and is still open.

It is possible to test this on any hardware, but you would need a second disk
if your firmware/bios is not able to boot from mac partition tables, like i
believe is the case for PReP boxes. This can also be tested on plain x86 boxes
with a second disk.

My believe is that since mac partitions used to not have the RAID flag, that
partman somewhere has some explicit test for x86 partitions, and sets the RAID
flag only in those cases, or something. I will try to reproduce his on pegasos
and its amiga partition tables, which are in the same case as the mac
partitions.

partman actually *ERASES* the raid flag set by hand by parted, which is rather
strange, and hints strongly at some problem in partman-md (but also possibly
mirrored in partman-lvm, which has a similar flag setup).

Friendly,

Sven Luther

Bug#406438: This is TOTALLY BROKEN behavior

2007-01-22 Thread Bastian Venthur
As the maintainer of kde-kdm-themes I don't think that desktop-base
brakes my package. I'm happy that it finally enables the new KDM theme
by default for the masses.

But it shows again that we need a solution for shared configuration files.

Nathanael Nerode schrieb:
As noted in the merged bugs, this breaks all theming and all
configuration of kdm. The Control Center module for kdm is completely broken
 by
this; so are the packages kde-kdm-themes and kdmtheme.

This is a totally unacceptable change to have right before etch releases.

However, purging desktop-base does fix the problem. I'm not sure whether this
is a serious bug on kdm or a serious bug on desktop-base. You can decide, but
this is definitely *not* acceptable to release etch with.

My two thoughts:

1. Is this the only problem building Debian packages? I would have
thought the different model, including permissions, etc would mess up
the Debian package.

2. Is it possible to get find to autodetect the file system, and use
-noleaf only as required? Maybe get it to look for . and .. and if
it can't find them, automatically use -noleaf. Embedding filesystem
specific changes like this into every package would seem to be the
wrong solution, IMHO.

I have a Dell Latitude D510, and get many Megabytes of log output in
~/.xsession-errors.
I measured ~40kB in 60 seconds.

Looking at

http://websvn.kde.org/branches/KDE/3.5/kdeutils/kmilo/delli8k/delli8k.cpp?view=markup
I'd suggest the following patch, to avoid that problem.

Currently I have to logoff/logon every day at least once, to free some 50 MB of

Bug#407837: gtk icon cache transition problems

(Granted, it's also an example of why I've constantly railed against
Ubuntu for forking their version of debhelper. If they had paid heed to
that or sent me a debhelper patch to review before deploying it, this
 could have possibly been avoided.)

The icon cache use has been discussed several times with the Debian
GNOME Team before any work started on that for Ubuntu and there is no
mistake which has been done or to avoid. That was clear from those
discussions than pkg-gnome was not wanting to use the current cache
implementation and that people are busy enough to not work on that at
the moment. The Ubuntu Desktop Team on the other side wanted to get the
icon cache used, has no problem with the current implementation and was
fine rebuilding the packages installing an icon to update the cache.
There was no point then for the Ubuntu team to send you patches for
something that the Debian desktop people don't want to use nor to talk
again about a topic we debated several times already, we decided to do
the work to show how it works for Ubuntu and then to send the patches to
Debian with some feedback and let you make your own decision from there

Bug#407899: iceweasel: should not open new window lanching external helpers for links

2007-01-22 Thread Paolo
Package: iceweasel
Version: 2.0.0.1+dfsg-2

here's the problem with current update:

I have a webpage which lists links to .tiff (fax) images.

On click on links FF used (as expected) to get the .tiff and pass it over to
the helper app (a fax viewer) *keeping* current page.

Now instead it starts the helper app but at same time it switches to a blank
window (which replaces the list).

That's a very bad impact on usability.

2007-01-22 Thread Steve Langasek
tags 402014 etch-ignore
thanks

I'm going to go out on a limb here and tag this bug as non-RC for etch. The
only case where this has been a concrete problem so far was for a particular
font package which had a broken version uploaded into the archive, where
upgrading that package didn't fix the cache. In the common case, I don't
think we have to worry about broken fonts in stable in the first place, so
clearing out caches from them needn't be release-critical either.

It would be nice to have these packages all playing together well for lenny
-- and even for etch, if things come together in time -- but the status quo
doesn't seem to be all that bad.

Cheers,

 wrong solution, IMHO.

Personally, I don't see that we need to support building Debian packages
on systems (including file systems) that don't support Unix semantics.
If we can fix building for AFS by merely changing find, good, but
requiring changes to all, many, or even any packaging scripts because of
this sounds like a bad idea to me.

Bug#407905: installation-report: boot fails with encrypted root over raid

2007-01-22 Thread Robert Lemmen
Package: installation-report
Severity: normal

i installed a computer yesterday, using the weekly images from the 15.
january. i didn't use the graphical installer. one of the points of this
installation was to try encrypted root over raid, which almost worked
out od the box, which is really sweet. the finished system doesn't boot,
since a file /conf/conf.d/cryptroot is missing in the initramfs, it should
contain the information about the crypted partition (source= and target=
lines are needed, the rest is ok in my case). i did work my way around
this using the cryptopts karnel parameter.

if you have any questions about the setup, just mail.

oh, and i noticed that the wiki says encrypted swap is currently not
working because it can't generate the entropy. this seemed to work for
me.

Bug#400675: kernel-patch-openvz: patch still not applying cleanly

 Yes, there will.

Ok, good to know. Upsream and I are subscribed to the package
tracking system for such uploads so we should be informed quite quickly.

This means that I do not have to bother that 7.1 version do not apply
cleanly against the version in

If so I need to be prepared as that will probably break this patch.

Why is this patch so fragile? If it breaks that easily, it hardly seems
releasable -- how do we protect against it being broken by security updates?

the patch is very big (about 700k) and applies to huge amount of places in the
kernel. From 2.6.19 somekind of hook functionality is in place as
far as I understand, but for 2.6.18 it is not possible to use that. I do not
know if it solves all the problems though.

The problem have arized everytime the kernel team change from
2.6.18 to 2.6.18.3 and then to 2.6.18.6. I do not think a problem have
arized when just doing minor updates, but I do not know for sure and it
depends on the update.

But security updates may need to be coordinated. I assume that same
problem can arize for vserver and xen patch, but those patches are a part of
the kernel source nowdays. I have requested openvz to be part of that as well
but not yet got any response. See #392015 for my request of that.

No idea. What programs do support these aliases? All of the TL suite?
 Would be surprising ...

IIRC the alias file is a feature of the kpathsea library. I don't have
that manual here to check that, though. In that case it would be supported

Bug#387646: postfix: Confusing default for the debconf question regarding synchronous updates

2007-01-22 Thread Robert Bihlmeyer
reopen 387646
found 387646 2.3.6-1
thanks

This bug is still present in 2.3.6-1 (currently in sid and etch), although the
default now seems to be false instead of off. Still, debconf expects a
boolean question to be answered either with yes or no -- i.e. the default
should be no.

You can easily reproduce this with

  dpkg-reconfigure -f readline postfix

Using the dialog frontend will not show the error...

Bug#407906: file-roller: Large archives should be extracted after drop target was chosen

2007-01-22 Thread Mathias Brodala
Package: file-roller
Version: 2.14.4-2
Severity: important

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

When I open a large archive (1GB for example) with file-roller, select all files
and drag and drop them into a directory, file-roller starts extracting the files
as soon as they are dragged. The problem is that I have too keep holding the
mouse button until file-roller has extracted all files to place them in the
target directory. If I release the button, file-roller immediately stops
extracting. To have to keep holding the mouse button all the time is a big
usability problem in my eyes.

The solution could be to handle the drop target first and extract the desired
files after that.

Bug#407908: evolution: alarm-notify crashes after typing in the notify window

2007-01-22 Thread Ingo Strüwing
Package: evolution
Version: 2.6.3-3
Severity: normal

Often I am typing into some window when the alarm-notify window pops up.
In these cases some of the typed characters go into the notify window. A
small window opens and takes the characters. Whenever this happens,
evolution-alarm-notify crashes when trying to close the notification
window. To recover it is necessary to end and restart evolution.
Otherwise the alarm notification feature is disabled.

FWIW: I am using a simple icewm setup (1.2.28-4). No desktop environment
like KDE or Gnome.

Yeah, the bug is tabled at #390913, #407798 and #407798.

Sorry for the duplicate, seems like I didn't read carefully enough.

This can only be resolved through a full system restart

No, as mentioned in #390913 you should find you can recover the cursor
by stepping over to console and back again (Ctrl-Alt-F1 followed by
 Alt-F7).

Unfortunately this is not true for the system here - the cursor doesn't
show up when switching to console and back again, neither when X is
restarted.

This is one of the things we hope that the future release of X.org
(X11R7.2 or 7.3) will fix, via the modesetting branch. This won't help
you if use etch, but after etch is released you could try the new
version of xserver-xorg-video-i810-modesetting once we get around to
updating it. It will likely appear first in experimental before we
 move it into unstable.

I'm looking forward to test this, thanks.

Oh yeah - one thing I forgot in the initial report: thanks a lot for all
the time you keep investing in building these packages! Keep up the good
work!

Yours
Johannes

I don't know whats happening behind the scenes with jobs in a thread
pool, but threads are so cheap in linux I doubt we need it anyway.

Bug#405649: Confirmed

2007-01-22 Thread Matthew Johnson

I get this, but with different files. However, manually re-running the
failing debhelper commands or rebuilding the package with -nc completes
cleanly. It uses cdbs, however, which I've not used so can't really
debug it any more.

Bug#400675: kernel-patch-openvz: patch still not applying cleanly

2007-01-22 Thread Kir Kolyshkin

Hi Steve,

See my comments below.

Steve Langasek wrote:

If so I need to be prepared as that will probably break this patch.

Why is this patch so fragile? If it breaks that easily, it hardly seems
releasable -- how do we protect against it being broken by security updates?

I suggest that
a. A workaround is to have kernel-image-openvz, the same as
Linux-VServer does. Thus people will not run into troubles.
b. A solution is to coordinate Debian security updates with OpenVZ
kernel team. Thus OpenVZ team can timely (i.e. before you release)
prepare a patch which is surely applicable to your kernel flavour.

Answering your question -- there were two fails, I looked through .rej
files and found their causes:

One failed hunk in net/ipv6/udp.c -- looks like the patch from 2.6.18.5
is not applied to linux-source-2.6.18-7:

* http://tinyurl.com/2n9554

Six failed hunks in net/ipv4/ip_tables.c -- same, looks like a few
patches from 2.6.18.y-stable are not applied to linux-source-2.6.18-7. I
see at least the following ones:

* http://tinyurl.com/2l5sae
* http://tinyurl.com/38bgxa
* http://tinyurl.com/2wx9jz

I have just checked that after applying four patches linked above,
kernel-patch-openvz-028test007.1 applies cleanly on top of
linux-source-2.6.18-2.6.18-7.

Thus the question: are you tracking the -stable tree, and how closely do
you follow it?

Regards,
 Kir.

Bug#357561: CGI scripts can get root

2007-01-22 Thread Richard Thrippleton
I noticed that suexec doesn't abdicate the controlling terminal either, and I'd
not be surprised to find out that non-suexec CGI invocation didn't do this
either. The result is that I've just been able to escalate from local user --
root by writing a hostile CGI script - this is no longer just a case of having
to find an exploit in apache itself.

I can get caudium to work in this box if i recompile caudium with debug...

Doesn't your original report say that rebuilding with debug gives a SIGABRT?

Well, I'm not a very experienced developer, but I did get a working

is not ok, but maybe a way to find the bug...

Bug#407921: lxr-cvs: genxref produces MySQL errors when used with --reindexall

2007-01-22 Thread Florian Zschocke
Package: lxr-cvs
Version: 0.9.4.0.20061001-2
Severity: normal

The option --reindexall to genxref produces MySQL errors when a MySQL
5.0.24a-Debian_9-log database server is used as a backend.

$ genxref --url=http://localhost/lxr --allversions --reindexall
produces:
BD::mysql::st execute failed: Unknown table 'lxr_indexes' in MULTI
DELETE at /usr/share/perl5/LXR/Index/Mysql.pm line 334.
DBD::mysql::st execute failed: Unknown table 'lxr_useage' in MULTI
DELETE at /usr/share/perl5/LXR/Index/Mysql.pm line 335.
DBD::mysql::st execute failed: Unknown table 'lxr_status' in MULTI
DELETE at /usr/share/perl5/LXR/Index/Mysql.pm line 336.
DBD::mysql::st execute failed: Unknown table 'lxr_files' in MULTI DELETE
at /usr/share/perl5/LXR/Index/Mysql.pm line 338.

The cause is incorrect syntax in the library file
/usr/share/perl5/LXR/Index/Mysql.pm. The statements for
delete_indexes, delete_useage, delete_status and delete_files
uses syntax which isn't working and also appears to be incorrect syntax
according to the MySQL manual.

The statement used is something like
delete from ${prefix}indexes using ${prefix}indexes i,
${prefix}releases r where ...

If changed to the following it works:
delete from i using ${prefix}indexes i, ${prefix}releases r where ...

The error has been in upstream for years and according to the bug
tracker of MySQL that was incorrect synatx already for MySQL 4.0.
Apparently nobody uses --reindexall or doesn't care about the errors. Or
is this not reproducible by others than me? The syntax used also
produces an identical error when used from the MySQL client shell.

Regards,
Florian Zschocke

Bug#256054: hpoj: this gives the impreassion to hang installations and upgrades via update-manager or non-interactive means

2007-01-22 Thread Eddy Petrișor
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Followup-For: Bug #256054
Package: hpoj
Version: 0.91-12

Prompting via by hand methods is deprecated (policy 3.9.1 Prompting in
maintainer scripts) and updating via an update
manager such as update-manager which (by default) does not show the
details leads to a situation that seems to be a hanging installation
process, although the postinst is prompting the user.

Also, on non-interactive upgrades, I suspect the process really hangs.

Bug#407799: KDM and desktop-base

2007-01-22 Thread Gustavo Franco

Hi,

I will be looking into this, but don't worry since our target for Etch
is desktop-base 4.0.1 and not 4.0.0.

Fathi, doesn't that hunk of changes into our svn fix this problem too?
I'm looking forward to a new upload this week, please let me know and
if you need testing and/or testers.

thanks,

Bug#407925: evolution: when out of disk space, create dialog storm which freezes the box

2007-01-22 Thread Sven Luther
Package: evolution
Version: 2.6.3-3
Severity: critical
Justification: causes serious data loss

While i was compiling stuff, i got a call and was updating an apointment i had
in the evolution calendar.

The compilation caused my /home to be full, and as thus, evolution was unable
to update the apointment.

But instead of opening a dialog informing me about the issue, and let me free
some space, it created a dialog storm, which left the box fully frozen (it was
a 1Ghz powerbook, with 512MB of ram), leaving me unable to move away from
evolution, unable to switch to a VT console, unable to even kill X with the
ctr-alt-del combo (well, maybe due to apple thinking there is no need for both
backspace and del, not sure), leaving me no choice but to reboot the machine.

This caused the loss of all the not-yet-saved data, thus the severity.

This is mainly to just acknowledge that I've read this (I did shortly
after it was sent), but at the moment I don't have time to work out how
to do this. Patches are always welcome though and I'll think about it
when I have time, so I'll leave it open to remind me.

Thanks,

Bug#407926: xchat: fails to authenticate with NickServ

2007-01-22 Thread b0rland
Package: xchat
Version: 2.6.8-0.3
Severity: normal

Since the upgrade to 2.6.8 xchat stopped authenticating properly with
NickServ on our irc. Instead of doing /msg NickServ something it
probably tries to do /nickserv command because server sends the reply

Worked ok with previous xchat version from Debian unstable (2.6.4 if I'm

Bug#407799: KDM and desktop-base

2007-01-22 Thread Julian Mehnle
Just wanting to follow up on a comment from Bastian Venthur in #406438:

Bastian Venthur wrote:

The problem is that it doesn't just enable the new KDM theme by default,

If this behavior is indeed intended or there isn't any other way to get

Bug#396944: exim4 giving me problems again (#396944)

2007-01-22 Thread Bruce Sass
Hello Marc,

I monitored the next two or three upgrades after the problem I was
having disappeared, all went well so I removed the flag which was
causing exim to spew debugging info out during the install... a few
more upgrades later and the problem has reappeared. Exim is running,
has no pid file in /var/run/exim, there is a non-empty error log, and I
have not touched anything to do with exim4 manually (it has all been
the packages scripts triggered by upgrades).

:-/

Got any ideas for a script to monitor the health of exim4 on this box?
Do you want all the logs?

Aside from looking for a running exim4, existing pidfile, and the error
log, I haven't touched anything... direct me. :-)

If they can do that, they also could confirm the subscription

do that, not e-mail spam bots, do they?

Since Mailman is a high-profile mailinglist server, I think that the
simple need to click such a link would be implemented quite quickly. If
implemented upstream, this feature would reach Debian stable about 1,5
years from now the earliest, and there's a good chance that bots have
caught up by then.

I do not think that the implementation effort offsets the benefits.

bluetooth-alsa need libsbc(-dev) - this will be uploaded to mentors

If you like to sponsor it for me just drop me a note. I will upload it

Bug#407689: tasksel: Please consider adding a Development task for Etch

2007-01-22 Thread peter green

The problem with adding a development task has always been, and
continues to be, that people do not use the same tools for development,
and that there are no good defaults beyond basic C-style development
 tools.
mind you a similar thing applies to say the file server task, there are at
least 3 different types of server that someone could want that would fit the
file server discription and its not at all clear which ones will be installed.

I personally belive that tasksel needs a major overhaul and is practically
useless in its present form, what i think is really needed is a set of
categories each with a number of entries so you'd say have a desktop category
(with gnome desktop, kde desktop, xfce desktop etc), a webserver category (with
basic websever, lamp webserver etc), a fileserver category (with samba, nfs and
ftp options), a development category (with basic development, kernel
development, debian package development, java development etc) and so on.

This is why #266702 is still open. The fact that those default
C development tools are no longer in standard still doesn't make
development a sensible task. It's not the same class of thing as
running a web server or using a desktop, both of which can be
accomplished well, if not perfectly for everyone, with a predetermined
 list of software.
maybe development is the wrong name but even a task that just installed
build-essential and the kernel headers would imo make things a lot easier for
those stuck with unusual hardware or wanting to compile software that is not
packaged off the bat (its not at all obvous to newbies that the package they
need to make basic compilation work in one step is called build-essential and
its pretty horrible getting compilation to work one package at a time).

Bug#407928: Not starting ffproxy due to option in /etc/default

2007-01-22 Thread Armando Romero
Package: ffproxy
Version: 1.6-2
Severity: normal

The ffproxy has option in /etc/default/ffproxy:

# yes = start on boot; no = don't start on boot
FFPROXY_START=no

That is great option which shall prevent starting on boot.

However, if that option is no, the script:

/etc/init.d/ffproxy start

gives:

Not starting ffproxy - edit /etc/default/ffproxy and change
FFPROXY_START to be 'yes'.

Which makes no sense, because /etc/init.d/ffprox shall be possible to
use to start the service, even if service was not started while booting.

Bug#356715: Intent(?) to NMU conserver to fix pending po-debconf l10n bugs

2007-01-22 Thread Jörgen Hägg

The conserver Debian package, which you are the maintainer of, has
pending bug report(s) which include translation updates or fixes for
po-debconf, namely bug number 356715 and a few others.

You very recently made updates so I don't doubt that you'll be able to
do an update to fix the 3 pending updates (it's strange that #356715
 escaped your radar).

Oops, I'll fix that as soon as possible.

Thanks.

Bug#407517: [SAMBA3][PATCH] Use more talloc in auth

2007-01-22 Thread Andrew Bartlett
This patch derives from debian bug 407517, where Jamie is seeing smbd
memory use skyrocket, when used from IIS.

I'm concerned about two things: memory leaks of server_info in closed
sessions (and leaks of other attached things), and the specific
behaviour of the getpwnam() cache.

I've adjusted the cache to use talloc_unlink(), which I think gives more
exact semantics for what is wanted here. An in the auth code, I've
tried to start using the new talloc(), to ensure we can't loose memory.

This passes the 'make test' of Samba3. I don't know if it solves
Jamie's problem however. (I just took a pot shot at some likely
suspects).

Thoughts?

Bug#407932: sisu -S [filename] where file is not found zips entire directory

2007-01-22 Thread ralph . amissah
Package: sisu
Version: 0.48.8-7
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***

if you run sisu with the -S flag, on a file that is not found, it goes into
directory zip mode (instead of zipping a single file and its associated parts
as the request intended) - which if not intended is annoying/ inconvenient as
the process is not easily killed and can easily happen (-S is used in
conjunction with other flags, and in batch processing)

[ * sisu -S [filename] should make a zipped file of document markup and any
associated files such as images that go with the document
  * sisu -S on its own makes a zipped file of the sisu markup contents of the
directory and other associated files ]

either the program should recognise that a filename has been requested, even
though this is not found - so it does not zip the directory, or a confirmation
request for directory zipping should be introduced

Bug#407930: desktop-base 4.0.0 MIGRATED to testing

2007-01-22 Thread Michael Banck
Package: desktop-base
Version: 4.0.0
Severity: important

Hi,

I think this is a regression (at least for the GNOME desktop) which got
noticed by several people now that should get addressed before etch:

A screen shot from after upgrade:

No offense to the artist involved but that looks horrid. The previous
was professional, subdued, and yet effectively branded as Debian.

The current solid white swirl is garish and visually distracting. From
an ergonomic and graphic design point of view this is embarrassing.

Visual elements on the desktop should not distract or interrupt the
viewing experience of the user. This jumps from screen and beats the
swirl into my forehead leaving a noticeably sore but visible tattoo...
well not really but jebus! You might as well poke my eyes out with it
 already! :-)

Was this intended? I don't recall this image on the candidate list at
all, and yet it is here.

This seems to have changed in commit #58 of debian-desktop:

fboudra-guest
reduce size of debian-blueish-wallpaper.svg

It indeed reduced the size of the .svg greatly by a factor of 10, but it
also changed the appearence, which I think should get addressed.

Fathi,

Are there issues besides the size with the old svg which needs to
get addressed?

If not, can either you or André maybe provide a smaller svg?

If yes, and no quick fix via svg is possible, can we maybe revert to a
png of the above good svg?

thanks,

Michael

Bug#403727: Dropouts have stopped

2007-01-22 Thread Maik Zumstrull
As of now, for no reason I can see, the dropouts have stopped.

I have neither changed my WPA and ifupdown configuration nor upgraded
directly related packages; but still, the problem is gone. I assume
this is due to some package update that seems unrelated, but somehow
isn't, like avahi-autoipd or dhclient3. Who knows?

With the maintainers blessing, I'm gonna give it another week or two
and if the problem stays gone, I'm gonna close this bug. If you insist
on closing it now, fine, but don't be surprised by a reopen if the
problem returns. :-)

I will drop that alternative then, and make it explicit. Thanks for

 - tetex will be dropped in lenny, all dependencies in etch should have

   tetex-bin | texlive-latex-base, tetex-extra | texlive-fonts-recommended

have to try, maybe it needs more packages. If it builds documentation

I guess in that case it'd be okay to make texlive-latex-base and
texlive-fonts-recommended the default alternatives instead of the tetex

 - finally (but this has nothing to do with Debian packaging): times.sty

Yeah, that is probably something to be taken up with upstream.
