Bug#457513: N: - lintian too noisy
Sune Vuorela [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Package: lintian Version: 1.23.41 Severity: normal It seems that someone filed 452804 and it is now fixed. I really disagree in that because I don't want to see output from lintian if there is nothing interesting. I should probably raise this on debian-devel, since having it on by default was explicitly requested. I figured at the time that someone would object, though. However When I add a override, I do not want to be bugged with it. This setting might be reasonable when there is just 1 binary package - but most of my packages produces many binary packages, most got some kind of lintian override, so now it is quite some information. ...this is itself a problem. Why do most of your packages have some sort of lintian override? What tags are you having to override that this would be true? Very few of my packages need lintian overrides. I suspect that there are ways that lintian could be improved that would eliminate the need for at least some of those overrides. This is one of the things I sort of liked about the proposal. In some cases, lots of overrides turn up tags that are poorly implemented or just a bad idea. (For example, I'm seriously considering dropping the multiple-sonames tag, since packaging multiple libraries in the same library package is often the right thing to do.) The very least thing to do is to add a --dont-show-useless-stuff switch - but I would prefer that the N: stuff wasn't on by default. I'll do this if we keep it on by default. I'd like to figure out what people want first, though, since I don't want to add the option and then end up removing it again. I'll mail debian-devel about this. -- Russ Allbery ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) http://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#453044: etckeeper: error message during pre-apt
Hi, just one observation. With newer versions of ?? the problem seems to be fixed. After upgrading my testing box the problem did not appear any more. Package: lvm2 Version: 2.02.26-1+b1 Severity: normal This happened to me today because I was trying to access a virtual machine's volume group. It had the same name as the one on the host system, so any lvm command would issue a warning saying it would take into account the one it created, which is just fine as a behaviour. The problem is that at this point, I tried to rename the conflicting vg with vgrename its-UUID a_new_name. That worked fine, except that it just renamed /dev/vg_old_name to /dev/vg_new_name, which means all lvs in the other vg named vg_old_name are now in /dev/vg_new_name. Note that when it can't rename the vg (it happened the first time because the virtual machine's disk was read-only), it still renames the /dev/vg_old_name directory. Bug#458595: signing-party: caff doesn't offer control over cert-level

Thanks for your patch, but I'm not so sure how useful this is - cert-level is not used in trust path calculations so what do you gain by specifying it? Your patch makes default installs ask the cert-level question; at least in my opinion that should not be the case: gnupg does not ask it by default (for the reason above: it's not really used) so we shouldn't be making it do that by default. If you want to override the default cert level, you can just add the default-cert-level to caff's gpg.conf. Doesn't that work for you? Thijs pgpDB5hr7Fy69.pgp Description: PGP signature

In Lenny this bug doesn't occur. It occurs to me that you might mean the ability to scroll back up in a manual page. Perhaps you need to install the 'less' package? If you installed a minimal system without the 'standard' task, you will only have the more primitive 'more' pager, which can't scroll backwards through piped input; install 'less' and you'll regain this ability. Package: dput Version: 0.9.2.29 Hi, I see you added a security-master config snippet to dput, which is a good idea. However, it's there without any further comments or notes. You may have seen that the section of the Developer's Reference is elaborate on the topic of security uploads and also advises not to upload anything without security team approval: http://www.debian.org/doc/developers-reference/ch-pkgs#s-bug-security That is of course based on past experience: the rules for security updates are strict so an inappropriate change is easily made, and having to reject uploads is cumbersome for the team. I think it's important to repeat the same warning that precedes the location of the security queue in the devref also in dput's config file: Do NOT upload a package to the security upload queues without prior authorization from the security team. See the following URL for instructions: http://www.debian.org/doc/developers-reference/ch-pkgs#s-bug-security; It would be very much appreciated if you would make a quick upload with this information added. thanks, Thijs pgpi0DLbyzOds.pgp Description: PGP signature

Then the script stops and it's difficult to take control on the terminal. The script doesn't check that the user has rights to stop/start tomcat and it fails badly. If the check was done, the script wouldn't stop like this. Maybe it would display a warning message to the user. Bug#458646: ppp: Please support arbitrary interface names [patch]
Subject: ppp: Please support arbitrary interface names Package: ppp Version: 2.4.4rel-9 Severity: normal Justification (for not being wishlist): because selectable interface names are becoming necessary on today's increasingly complex ADSL, UMTS; etc. configrations Tags: patch, upstream *** Please type your report below this line *** Use of arbitrary and freely selectable network interface names both improves manageability of systems with multiple interfaces (e.g. two outgoing ADSL lines for upstream connection and multiple incoming L2TP/IPSec tunnels with obviously very different settings/requirements) and makes firewalling much easier. Although pppX interface names can be changed with ip link set pppX name , e.g. in ip-up.d/ scripts, this solution is far from optimal because ppp itself gets confused when the current interface name does not correspond to its internal unit name. The most obvious breakage is that statistics no longer get printed (e.g. to syslog) when terminating a connection and that the CONNECT_TIME, BYTES_RCVD, and BYTES_SENT variables are not set for ip-down scripts. This makes accurate accounting and keeping track of quota a lot harder. I found the attached patch on the ppp mailing list archives from quite a while ago and forward-ported it to ppp 2.4.4 with Debian specific patches taken into consideration. It should apply cleanly when dropping the attached file into debian/patches. When applied, the new option ifname can be used e.g. in /etc/ppp/peers/YYY to set which interface name should be used for the specific connection. This is complementary to the existing linkname option, which is not sufficient for clean interaction with firewalling, NAT, policy routing, IPSec, etc. I have tested it on multiple systems with and without this option being used and found no issues at all (elthough I have not tried multilink, which the patch also seems to take care of). It will be used for all ppp versions in future Gibraltar releases. Please consider applying it to future ppp packages. best regards, Rene -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (800, 'testing'), (300, 'unstable'), (100, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.22-3-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=de_AT.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_AT.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages ppp depends on: ii libc6 2.7-5 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libpam-modules0.99.7.1-5 Pluggable Authentication Modules f ii libpam-runtime0.99.7.1-5 Runtime support for the PAM librar ii libpam0g 0.99.7.1-5 Pluggable Authentication Modules l ii libpcap0.80.9.8-2System interface for user-level pa ii netbase 4.30 Basic TCP/IP networking system ii procps1:3.2.7-5 /proc file system utilities ppp recommends no packages. -- no debconf information diff -urN ppp-2.4.4.orig/pppd/auth.c ppp-2.4.4/pppd/auth.c --- ppp-2.4.4.orig/pppd/auth.c Tue Jan 1 14:44:37 2008 +++ ppp-2.4.4/pppd/auth.c Tue Jan 1 14:45:12 2008 @@ -647,8 +647,10 @@ } if (!hungup) lcp_lowerdown(0); -if (!doing_multilink !demand) +if (!doing_multilink !demand) { script_unsetenv(IFNAME); +script_unsetenv(IFUNIT); +} /* * Run disconnector script, if requested. diff -urN ppp-2.4.4.orig/pppd/main.c ppp-2.4.4/pppd/main.c --- ppp-2.4.4.orig/pppd/main.c Tue Jan 1 14:44:37 2008 +++ ppp-2.4.4/pppd/main.c Tue Jan 1 14:45:12 2008 @@ -739,9 +739,14 @@ set_ifunit(iskey) int iskey; { -info(Using interface %s%d, PPP_DRV_NAME, ifunit); slprintf(ifname, sizeof(ifname), %s%d, PPP_DRV_NAME, ifunit); -script_setenv(IFNAME, ifname, iskey); +info(Using interface %s, ifname); +script_setenv(IFUNIT, ifname, iskey); +if (req_ifname[0] sys_change_ifname(ifname, req_ifname)) { + slprintf(ifname, sizeof(ifname), %s, req_ifname); +info(Changing interface to %s, ifname); +} +script_setenv(IFNAME, ifname, 0); if (iskey) { create_pidfile(getpid()); /* write pid to file */ create_linkpidfile(getpid()); diff -urN ppp-2.4.4.orig/pppd/multilink.c ppp-2.4.4/pppd/multilink.c --- ppp-2.4.4.orig/pppd/multilink.c Tue Jan 1 14:44:37 2008 +++ ppp-2.4.4/pppd/multilink.c Tue Jan 1 14:45:12 2008 @@ -204,7 +204,7 @@ /* make sure the string is null-terminated */ rec.dptr[rec.dsize-1] = 0; /* parse the interface number */ - parse_num(rec.dptr, IFNAME=ppp, unit); + parse_num(rec.dptr, IFUNIT=ppp, unit); /* check the pid value */ if (!parse_num(rec.dptr, PPPD_PID=, pppd_pid) || !process_exists(pppd_pid) @@ -417,7 +417,7 @@ TDB_DATA kd, vd; int ret = 0; - slprintf(ifkey, sizeof(ifkey), IFNAME=ppp%d, unit); + slprintf(ifkey, sizeof(ifkey), IFUNIT=ppp%d, unit); kd.dptr = ifkey; kd.dsize = strlen(ifkey); vd =

Bug#439832: Status of armel in the archive?
Heya, From a release team point of view, it's quite interesting if armel is going to make it into the archive before lenny. It's quality is at least matching the current arm port at the moment and after lenny (at the latest) we would like to drop the current arm. A release with both architectures side by side would be nice for the transition. Could you please comment on the current status and list outstanding issues blocking the inclusion of armel in the archive? Bug#451751: resolvconf: Please add LSB formatted dependency info in init.d script
[Petter Reinholdtsen 2007-11-18] Here is a patch to document the dependencies. I hope this is correct. Any hope of having this fixed soon? I've been working on the dependency based boot sequencing during Christmas, and it is now working as it should. The only real problem now is the scripts missing dependency information and scripts with incorrect dependency information. For a desktop install in Debian Edu, resolvconf is one of the few packages without init.d dependencies, so it would be great if it would get its header soon. Information about the dependency based boot sequencing is available from URL: http://wiki.debian.org/LSBInitScripts/DependencyBasedBoot . Hey Trond, Would you take a quick look at http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=453946 Do you have some insights on this? What should the man page say about current support of O_EXCL on NFS? Cheers, Michael Timo Sirainen wrote: On Sun, 2007-12-02 at 21:37 +0100, Michael Kerrisk wrote: On Dec 2, 2007 3:32 PM, Timo Sirainen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Package: manpages-dev Version: 2.64-1 Severity: normal O_EXCL is broken on NFS file systems is wrong. Rather it should be O_EXCL doesn't work on NFSv2 file systems. And since pretty much everyone uses at least NFSv3 nowadays I don't think it's worth mentioning the link() workaround anymore. Timo, Can you provide pointers to further information about O_EXCL working for NFSv3 and later? I am no NFS expert. It seems to be pretty difficult to find useful information about how different NFS clients and servers work. I started writing http://iki.fi/tss/nfs-coding-howto.html a while ago and tested several OSes' NFS clients. They all supported O_EXCL. http://nfs.sourceforge.net/ says that O_EXCL has worked in Linux since v2.6.5. NFSv3 RFC (http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1813.html) talks about EXCLUSIVE and GUARDED creation modes which both work for O_EXCL, so at least in theory all NFSv3 clients and servers should support it. Looks like Linux kernel has code that if server doesn't support either EXCLUSIVE or GUARDED it fallbacks to using unguarded create instead of giving an error. I don't know if there are any servers not supporting it though. -- Michael Kerrisk Maintainer of the Linux man-pages project http://www.kernel.org/doc/man-pages/ Want to report a man-pages bug? Bug#458649: scsitools: Please add LSB formatted dependency info in init.d script
Package: scsitools Version: 0.9-1 Tags: patch User: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Usertags: missing-dependency To be able to check boot script order, and also to be able to start boot scripts in parallel, it is important to know the dependencies of the various boot scripts. The Linux Software Base specifies a init.d header file format useful for this purpose, and adding such header to the init.d script would make it possible for me to use this information to check the current sequence and to speed up the debian boot. I am working on a system to update the boot sequence based on these dependencies, and would like see this as the default in Lenny. Because of this, it is nice if the dependencies was updated quickly. URL:http://refspecs.freestandards.org/LSB_2.1.0/LSB-generic/LSB-generic/initscrcomconv.html documents the LSB header format. Some debian notes are available from URL:http://wiki.debian.org/LSBInitScripts. Here is a patch to document the dependencies. Its normal that scripts in /etc/init.d/ are executed by root. /etc/init.d/ is no exception from this rule. If thats not your problem please describe in more detail. I understand the script has to be runned by root and I always use sudo command to run it. But as I launch this command about 30 times a day, sometimes I forget the sudo. Then the script stops and it's difficult to take control on the terminal. The script doesn't check that the user has rights to stop/start tomcat and it fails badly. If the check was done, the script wouldn't stop like this. Maybe it would display a warning message to the user. I have added check and graceful abort. But I really you should use a shell alias if you really need to restart tomcat5.5 so much. I cant see a reason why this should be needed (with hot deployment) but I dont know your usecase.
