Bug#457513: N: - lintian too noisy

2008-01-02 Thread Russ Allbery
Sune Vuorela [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

 Package: lintian
 Version: 1.23.41
 Severity: normal

It seems that someone filed 452804 and it is now fixed. I really
disagree in that because I don't want to see output from lintian if
 there is nothing interesting.

I should probably raise this on debian-devel, since having it on by
default was explicitly requested. I figured at the time that someone
would object, though.

However

When I add a override, I do not want to be bugged with it. This setting
might be reasonable when there is just 1 binary package - but most of my
packages produces many binary packages, most got some kind of lintian
override, so now it is quite some information.

...this is itself a problem. Why do most of your packages have some sort
of lintian override? What tags are you having to override that this would
be true? Very few of my packages need lintian overrides.

I suspect that there are ways that lintian could be improved that would
eliminate the need for at least some of those overrides. This is one of
the things I sort of liked about the proposal. In some cases, lots of
overrides turn up tags that are poorly implemented or just a bad idea.
(For example, I'm seriously considering dropping the multiple-sonames tag,
since packaging multiple libraries in the same library package is often
the right thing to do.)

The very least thing to do is to add a --dont-show-useless-stuff switch
 - but I would prefer that the N: stuff wasn't on by default.

I'll do this if we keep it on by default. I'd like to figure out what
people want first, though, since I don't want to add the option and then
end up removing it again.

I'll mail debian-devel about this.

Bug#453044: etckeeper: error message during pre-apt

2008-01-02 Thread Achim Schaefer
Hi,

just one observation.

With newer versions of ?? the problem seems to be fixed.
After upgrading my testing box the problem did not appear any more.
So I assume something migrated from unstable to testing, solving the
problem.

Attached the typescript. (before upgrade)

Can you describe this a little bit more?

Run script, reproduce the problem, exit script's shell, and send me

Bug#458827: libcwiid1-dev needs to depend on libbluetooth-dev

2008-01-02 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: libcwiid1-dev
Version: 0.6.00-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

cwiid.h in libcwiid1-dev includes bluetooth/bluetooth.h, found in
libbluetooth-dev. However, libcwiid1-dev does not depend on
libbluetooth-dev. This makes it impossible to build any program which

Because in the process of resolving this unrelated bug I believe I got
hit by the same issue:

/usr/bin/../lib/libgsl.so.0: undefined reference to `cblas_zswap'
/usr/bin/../lib/libgsl.so.0: undefined reference to `cblas_zsymm'

adun.app is a GNUstep program, so should not be using qmake,

Correct, it uses gnustep-make and I pass -Wl,-z,defs -Wl,--as-needed
in the new version of the package.

Most of the overridesis related to putting different sonames in same package.
At least when packaging kde, this quite often makes sense. Another group is
due to weird upstream using of libraries called libkdeinit_*.so. And a
thirg group is a app having a shared library currently only used by that
app and stuffed in the same package as the app.

kdebase for example:
$ grep ^Package debian/control | wc --lines
35

$ ls debian/*.lintian | wc --lines
14

Having 14 packages in the same source package adding one or more lintian
override is making N: actually quite verbose.

 I'll mail debian-devel about this.

Probably a nice idea.

Bug#458830: slapd: slapcat failure on x86_32|64

2008-01-02 Thread Richard A Nelson
Package: slapd
Version: 2.3.39-1
Severity: important

I've been running the same setup for a while - a master (x86_64) and two
syncrepl clients (x86_32): After some recent updates to the system,
I discovered this failure on both x86_(32|64)... It prevents package
updates from working, and destroys the ability to backup the local
databases.

$slapcat -b'dc=cobpli,dc=svl,dc=ibm,dc=com' -f /etc/ldap/ldif/slapcat.ldif

After much digging, I discovered the culprit:
$cat /etc/ldap/fwd.ibm_bluepages

directory /var/lib/ldap/bluepages
...

# Allow anyone to read the data locally

Commenting out the pcache overlay related entries does allow the slapcat
to continue... I think, but can not ensure that I've run slapcat since
adding the pcache overlay.

Bug#458832: /usr/bin/gnome-appearance-properties: Changes options to scaled instead of stretched when run for the first time

2008-01-02 Thread Mike Hommey
Package: gnome-control-center
Version: 1:2.20.1-2
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/gnome-appearance-properties

When using a new user, at gnome session start, the default debian
background is displayed properly stretched, and a check in the gconf
registry shows that /desktop/gnome/background/picture_options is set to
stretched.

When running the appearance properties panel for the very first time,
the background changes to being simply scaled, which means blue bars
on the left and right sides of the screen on wide screens. The
background itself doesn't change in another way.
/desktop/gnome/background/picture_options gets set to scaled.

When changing the option to Fill screen in the background tab, the key
is set to stretched again, and doesn't change when launching the panel
afterwards.

Bug#458833: lvm2: vgrename behaves badly with /dev/vg_name when having conflicting vg names

2008-01-02 Thread Mike Hommey
Package: lvm2
Version: 2.02.26-1+b1
Severity: normal

This happened to me today because I was trying to access a virtual
machine's volume group. It had the same name as the one on the host
system, so any lvm command would issue a warning saying it would take
into account the one it created, which is just fine as a behaviour.

The problem is that at this point, I tried to rename the conflicting vg
with vgrename its-UUID a_new_name.

That worked fine, except that it just renamed /dev/vg_old_name to
/dev/vg_new_name, which means all lvs in the other vg named vg_old_name
are now in /dev/vg_new_name.

Note that when it can't rename the vg (it happened the first time
because the virtual machine's disk was read-only), it still renames the
/dev/vg_old_name directory.

Bug#442892: xserver-xorg: This bug is still around

2008-01-02 Thread Mike Hommey
Followup-For: Bug #442892
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+9

FWIW, I got the same thing again when installing a brand new debian system,
first installing the base system, then xserver-xorg with
APT::Install-Recommends set to false.

This sadly results in an empty xorg.conf, which makes the system
unuseable, while having no xorg.conf file at all works in most cases.

Indeed. Thanks, I cleared up all the docbook stuff for the next release.

I'm not sure what to do with these, since they really are extra copies of
the licenses without any useful change (unlike the *.html versions):

W: kdelibs-data: extra-license-file usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/common/fdl-license
W: kdelibs-data: extra-license-file usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/common/gpl-license
W: kdelibs-data: extra-license-file
usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/common/lgpl-license

You could make them symlinks to common-licenses. That's probably what I'd
do.

Bug#458595: signing-party: caff doesn't offer control over cert-level

2008-01-02 Thread Thijs Kinkhorst
On Wednesday 2 January 2008 00:41, Christopher Schmidt wrote:

Thanks for your patch, but I'm not so sure how useful this is - cert-level is
not used in trust path calculations so what do you gain by specifying it?

Your patch makes default installs ask the cert-level question; at least in my
opinion that should not be the case: gnupg does not ask it by default (for
the reason above: it's not really used) so we shouldn't be making it do that
by default.

If you want to override the default cert level, you can just add the
default-cert-level to caff's gpg.conf. Doesn't that work for you?

Bug#458624: swapd: Please add LSB formatted dependency info in init.d script

2008-01-02 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: swapd
Version: 0.1-1
Tags: patch
User: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Usertags: missing-dependency

To be able to check boot script order, and also to be able to start
boot scripts in parallel, it is important to know the dependencies of
the various boot scripts. The Linux Software Base specifies a init.d
header file format useful for this purpose, and adding such header to
the init.d script would make it possible for me to use this
information to check the current sequence and to speed up the debian
boot.

I am working on a system to update the boot sequence based on these
dependencies, and would like see this as the default in Lenny.
Because of this, it is nice if the dependencies was updated quickly.

URL:http://refspecs.freestandards.org/LSB_2.1.0/LSB-generic/LSB-generic/initscrcomconv.html
documents the LSB header format. Some debian notes are available from
URL:http://wiki.debian.org/LSBInitScripts.

Here is a patch to document the dependencies. I hope this is correct.

Here's yet another patch that would allow the use of options for use
with debOrigScript. It introduces another property,
debOrigScriptOptions. You would set this property in a similar way
as setting debOrigScript. This time you would enclose the options
within parantheses and seperate each option using whitespace. For

2008-01-02 Thread Wojciech Zareba
As far as I can see you never replied to this, so I'm afraid I'm going
to have to close this bug for lack of information.

I've uninstalled Sid and currently I'm using Lenny. In Lenny this bug
doesn't occur.

It occurs to me that you might mean the ability to scroll back up in a
manual page. Perhaps you need to install the 'less' package? If you
installed a minimal system without the 'standard' task, you will only
have the more primitive 'more' pager, which can't scroll backwards
through piped input; install 'less' and you'll regain this ability.

 Cheers,

Thank you for the advice.

Regards
Wojciech

Bug#458626: dmraid: Please add LSB formatted dependency info in init.d script

2008-01-02 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: dmraid
Version: 1.0.0.rc13-1
Tags: patch
User: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Usertags: missing-dependency

To be able to check boot script order, and also to be able to start
boot scripts in parallel, it is important to know the dependencies of
the various boot scripts. The Linux Software Base specifies a init.d
header file format useful for this purpose, and adding such header to
the init.d script would make it possible for me to use this
information to check the current sequence and to speed up the debian
boot.

I am working on a system to update the boot sequence based on these
dependencies, and would like see this as the default in Lenny.
Because of this, it is nice if the dependencies was updated quickly.

URL:http://refspecs.freestandards.org/LSB_2.1.0/LSB-generic/LSB-generic/initscrcomconv.html
documents the LSB header format. Some debian notes are available from
URL:http://wiki.debian.org/LSBInitScripts.

Here is a patch to document the dependencies. I hope this is correct.

Bug#458627: ejabberd: Security issues: user registration should be disabled by default

2008-01-02 Thread Daniel Pocock
Package: ejabberd
Version: 1.1.2-6
Severity: normal

By default, ejabberd provides a service accepting public user
registration. Any user on the Internet can potentially connect to the
ejabberd process and register an account for themself. This is a
security issue.

Minimal solution:
- disable the registration service by default
- put instructions in README.Debian for enabling it

Better solution:
- use debconf to allow the installer to choose whether they want public
user registration (default=no)

Modifying /etc/ejabberd/ejabberd.cfg to be like the example below, and
restarting the process, will rectify the issue:

% Every username can be registered via in-band registration:
%{access, register, [{allow, all}]}.

% None username can be registered via in-band registration:
{access, register, [{deny, all}]}.

Bug#458628: dput.cf misses important security queue warnings

2008-01-02 Thread Thijs Kinkhorst
Package: dput
Version: 0.9.2.29

Hi,

I see you added a security-master config snippet to dput, which is a good
idea. However, it's there without any further comments or notes.

You may have seen that the section of the Developer's Reference is elaborate
on the topic of security uploads and also advises not to upload anything
without security team approval:
http://www.debian.org/doc/developers-reference/ch-pkgs#s-bug-security
That is of course based on past experience: the rules for security updates are
strict so an inappropriate change is easily made, and having to reject
uploads is cumbersome for the team.

I think it's important to repeat the same warning that precedes the location
of the security queue in the devref also in dput's config file:

Do NOT upload a package to the security upload queues without prior
authorization from the security team.
See the following URL for instructions:
http://www.debian.org/doc/developers-reference/ch-pkgs#s-bug-security;

It would be very much appreciated if you would make a quick upload with this
information added.

thanks,

Thijs

can do so via the popup panel in Icewm.

I have reverted to the backported version of xserver-xorg-core.

The script should warn the user that has no rights for this
operation.

As you may notice I use my own jdk package but I don't think
this has an effect on this problem.

Which user do you mean? Its normal that scripts in /etc/init.d/ are
executed by root. /etc/init.d/ is no exception from this rule.

If thats not your problem please describe in more detail.

I understand the script has to be runned by root and I
always use sudo command to run it. But as I launch this
command about 30 times a day, sometimes I forget the sudo.

Then the script stops and it's difficult to take control on
the terminal. The script doesn't check that the user has
rights to stop/start tomcat and it fails badly. If the check
was done, the script wouldn't stop like this. Maybe it would
display a warning message to the user.

Bug#458646: ppp: Please support arbitrary interface names [patch]

2008-01-02 Thread Rene Mayrhofer
Subject: ppp: Please support arbitrary interface names
Package: ppp
Version: 2.4.4rel-9
Severity: normal
Justification (for not being wishlist): because selectable interface names are
becoming necessary on today's increasingly complex ADSL, UMTS; etc.
configrations
Tags: patch, upstream

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Use of arbitrary and freely selectable network interface names both improves
manageability of systems with multiple interfaces (e.g. two outgoing ADSL
lines for upstream connection and multiple incoming L2TP/IPSec tunnels with
obviously very different settings/requirements) and makes firewalling much
easier. Although pppX interface names can be changed with
ip link set pppX name , e.g. in ip-up.d/ scripts, this solution is far
from optimal because ppp itself gets confused when the current interface name
does not correspond to its internal unit name. The most obvious breakage is
that statistics no longer get printed (e.g. to syslog) when terminating a
connection and that the CONNECT_TIME, BYTES_RCVD, and BYTES_SENT variables
are not set for ip-down scripts. This makes accurate accounting and keeping
track of quota a lot harder.

I found the attached patch on the ppp mailing list archives from quite a while
ago and forward-ported it to ppp 2.4.4 with Debian specific patches taken into
consideration. It should apply cleanly when dropping the attached file into
debian/patches. When applied, the new option ifname can be used e.g. in
/etc/ppp/peers/YYY to set which interface name should be used for the specific
connection. This is complementary to the existing linkname option, which is
not sufficient for clean interaction with firewalling, NAT, policy routing,
IPSec, etc.
I have tested it on multiple systems with and without this option being used
and found no issues at all (elthough I have not tried multilink, which the
patch also seems to take care of). It will be used for all ppp versions in
future Gibraltar releases.

Please consider applying it to future ppp packages.

best regards,
Rene

Bug#439832: Status of armel in the archive?

2008-01-02 Thread Marc 'HE' Brockschmidt
Heya,

From a release team point of view, it's quite interesting if armel is
going to make it into the archive before lenny. It's quality is at least
matching the current arm port at the moment and after lenny (at the
latest) we would like to drop the current arm. A release with both
architectures side by side would be nice for the transition.

Could you please comment on the current status and list outstanding
issues blocking the inclusion of armel in the archive?

Bug#410346: _BSD_SOURCE flag

2008-01-02 Thread Petr Salinger

Why is it needed?

Due to ziffy/hooks.c:

#if defined(linux)
# if !defined(_BSD_SOURCE)
#  define _BSD_SOURCE
# endif
#endif

Not only on linux should be _BSD_SOURCE set.
In fact on all glibc based systems.

I assume it's failing compilation on GNU/kFreeBSD . Where?

dfo should not build-depend on mono, which is no longer provided by
 mono source package since 1.2.6+dfsg-1.
mono package depends on mono-common and mono-jit, which are provided
 by libmono-sqlite2.0-cil.

Hi,

This causes the package to FTBFS, so it's serious.

Bug#451751: resolvconf: Please add LSB formatted dependency info in init.d script

2008-01-02 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
[Petter Reinholdtsen 2007-11-18]
Here is a patch to document the dependencies. I hope this is correct.

Any hope of having this fixed soon? I've been working on the
dependency based boot sequencing during Christmas, and it is now
working as it should. The only real problem now is the scripts
missing dependency information and scripts with incorrect dependency
information. For a desktop install in Debian Edu, resolvconf is one
of the few packages without init.d dependencies, so it would be great
if it would get its header soon.

Information about the dependency based boot sequencing is available
from URL: http://wiki.debian.org/LSBInitScripts/DependencyBasedBoot .

Happy hacking,

Can you reproduce this problem with GRUB 2 ?

Nope, and the source code seems to show that HDIO_GETGEO's result is not
really taken into account there :)

What are the plans for Lenny? 1TB disks will probably not be so
 uncommon during its future lifetime...

I would like to make GRUB 2 the default, but there are still some unresolved
issues. More details at http://wiki.debian.org/GrubTransition

Help is, of course, much appreciated.

Bug#453946: manpages-dev: NFS warning for open(2) O_EXCL is a bit outdated

2008-01-02 Thread Michael Kerrisk
Hey Trond,

Would you take a quick look at

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=453946

Do you have some insights on this? What should the man page say about
current support of O_EXCL on NFS?

Cheers,

Michael

 Timo,

Can you provide pointers to further information about O_EXCL working
for NFSv3 and later? I am no NFS expert.

It seems to be pretty difficult to find useful information about how
different NFS clients and servers work. I started writing
http://iki.fi/tss/nfs-coding-howto.html a while ago and tested several
OSes' NFS clients. They all supported O_EXCL.

http://nfs.sourceforge.net/ says that O_EXCL has worked in Linux since
 v2.6.5.

NFSv3 RFC (http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1813.html) talks about EXCLUSIVE
and GUARDED creation modes which both work for O_EXCL, so at least in
theory all NFSv3 clients and servers should support it.

Looks like Linux kernel has code that if server doesn't support either
EXCLUSIVE or GUARDED it fallbacks to using unguarded create instead of
giving an error. I don't know if there are any servers not supporting it
 though.

Bug#458649: scsitools: Please add LSB formatted dependency info in init.d script

2008-01-02 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: scsitools
Version: 0.9-1
Tags: patch
User: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Usertags: missing-dependency

To be able to check boot script order, and also to be able to start
boot scripts in parallel, it is important to know the dependencies of
the various boot scripts. The Linux Software Base specifies a init.d
header file format useful for this purpose, and adding such header to
the init.d script would make it possible for me to use this
information to check the current sequence and to speed up the debian
boot.

I am working on a system to update the boot sequence based on these
dependencies, and would like see this as the default in Lenny.
Because of this, it is nice if the dependencies was updated quickly.

URL:http://refspecs.freestandards.org/LSB_2.1.0/LSB-generic/LSB-generic/initscrcomconv.html
documents the LSB header format. Some debian notes are available from
URL:http://wiki.debian.org/LSBInitScripts.

Here is a patch to document the dependencies. I hope this is correct.

this has an effect on this problem.

I have added check and graceful abort. But I really you should use a
shell alias if you really need to restart tomcat5.5 so much. I cant see
a reason why this should be needed (with hot deployment) but I dont know
your usecase.

Thanks for your bug report.

tomcat5.5 should have alternate depends on java2-compiler instead of
java2-runtime as JDK is required for running a tomcat instance.

Installing tomcat5.5 without package that provides java2-compiler seems
 to cause problems described in
 https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tomcat5.5/+bug/179447.

java2-compiler would be a wrong dependency as this only a compiler,
without class library or runtime. Its only provided by sun-java5-jdk and
sun-java6-jdk. We should really remove this virtual package from our
policy.

The main problem is that we cannot differentiate between JRE and JDK.
This needs to be solved first. We really need to update and then implement
the new Java Policy.

thought it best to mention it.

I have created a new bug (458623) to handle this issue, please reply
there.

There are some strange things happening in your setup. For some reason a
process is doing a lot of NSS lookups and not completing the queries.

Could you perform some tests for me?

 1. run nslcd in debug mode
  /etc/init.d/nslcd stop
  nslcd -d
 2. perform some lookups
  getent passwd svn
  getent group svn
  id -a svn
and report the output and the output from nslcd above?
 3. perform an ssh login and report the output from nslcd above and any
information that sshd reports (you could also run sshd in debug
mode)

In the above nslcd reports process ids of incoming connections. Can you
check that those are from sshd?

Can you also describe a little about your environment
(/etc/nss-ldapd.conf, /etc/nsswitch.conf, maybe you have AllowGroups
and/or AllowUsers entries in /etc/ssh/sshd_config, how many users do you
have, number of groups, etc).

Thanks.

Hi,

Please include the use_localtime directive in the shipped vsftpd.conf. It
doesn't need to be enabled by default (although I always enable it), but it
should at least be there so people know this setting exists - from Googling

shows a wrong time.

It's in the manpage, but if you ask me, this is a setting used by many people
so a place in the default config file seems logical, so it only needs to be
decommented.
