Bug#474345: should run rtupdate scripts on first install

2008-04-05 Thread Steve M. Robbins
Package: python
Version: 2.4.4-6
Severity: normal

It would be convenient to have any previously-installed rtupdate
scripts run at first install of python.

The use case is: a package that provides optional Python support may
have an rtupdate script that is called by its postinst using
pyversions to find the default runtime version.

Since the Python support is optional, the package does not depend on
python. In this case, its postinst script must skip the rtupdate if
python is not available.

When Python is subsequently installed, the rtupdate scripts of all
previously-installed packages should be run.

But, the message is displayed, yet. Insert the CD 1 ...

I tried press ENTER, but nothing happened and the message continued.

I had to open a terminal and I typed umount /cdrom and after eject.

After, I inserted the DVD again, the installation process continued

Should I get the DVD image from lenny_di_beta1? The image was created

Bug#474320: Should this package be orphaned?

2008-04-05 Thread Robert Hinn

Hello,

I think it might be time that we take responsibility and offer to
maintain the open-sTeam Debian packages ourselves ;-)
I must admit that I'm not a Debian packaging expert, although I've
managed to build my own steam packages using fakeroot and dpkg-
buildpacke so far. I'll have to look into the online docs and see what
I need to do to properly maintain the package.
I've just been successful in putting up a project for steam on the
openSUSE build service, too, so I have some packaging experience with
RPM packages, and will hopefully be able to maintain proper Debian
packages, too.

By the way, Alain has written a seminar work about packaging steam for
debian and the debian build and maintainance process, so I have some
good docs to start with ;-)

Best regards,
  Robert

this is about the common way of autoconfiguring IPv6 addresses by creating

Bug#464151: this bug/#464151 - sudo 1.6.9p11-2 does not solve Bug #402329

2008-04-05 Thread Dr. Markus Waldeck
FYI, I'm packaging sudo 1.6.9p15-1 right now. In the upstream CHANGES
file, I note that since 1.6.9p12 there is an entry:

 646) Sudo will now set the nproc resource limit to unlimited on Linux
systems to work around Linux's setuid() resource limit semantics.
On PAM systems the resource limits will be reset by pam_limits.so
  before the command is executed.

I will be interested to learn whether this changes things, please try
the new version once it shows up in your mirror and let us know!

% id -un
waldeck
% ulimit -u
16378
% sudo -s
% id -un
root
% ulimit -u
unlimited

This is the correct behavior!

But with other limits like cpu time the value is not reset!

Bug#465273: doesnt update /etc/readahead/*

2008-04-05 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
I believe I found the problem. readahead-watch store its pid file in
/var/run/, which is only writable that early during boot if RAMRUN=yes
is set in /etc/default/rcS.

A better fix to get it working also for the RAMRUN=no setting, is to
change the pidfile path of readahead-watch to
/lib/init/rw/readahead-watch.pid.

Can you test if setting RAMRUN=yes work for you?

Happy hacking,

 Hi,

Attached is the diff for my chasen 2.3.3-6.3 NMU.
 I will upload to DELAYED/7

Thanks for fixing bugs, but just wait for a while.

I'm preparing naist-jdic package, replacement for ipadic, I talked with
ipadic/naist-jdic upstream and it is released under BSD license :-)

So chasen package should use naist-jdic,
I've prepared updated chasen package with many changes at
 http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/c/chasen/chasen_2.3.3-6.3.dsc
but chasen maintainer knok's health condition is not good (Influenza or so),
I have not received his reply yet.

Package: readahead

I found this patch in Ubuntu with a comment stating that it Fix build
failure with g++-4.3. It sound like a fix we want in the Debian
package too. I'm not sure if it is needed, so I put it in BTS for
review.

FWIW xulrunner/iceweasel based on FF 2.0 does not work (even if it

compiled. The nokia internet tablets are based on armel and and
have browser based on FF3.0 alpha, so it would seem more feasible
to get FF3.0 working than backporting the support to 2.0..

It would still be nice to get the bug reports, especially considering
iceape and icedove, which i assume both build fine too, will more than
probably ship in 2.0 based versions in lenny.

Could you try to use the same toolchain as when xulrunner was built ?
  i.e. gcc-4.2_4.2.3-2 g++-4.2_4.2.3-2 binutils_2.18.1~cvs20080103-1

A quick test confirms, test.c compiles fine with g++-4.2, but fails with
 g++-4.3.

Seems like a candidate for a gcc regression :-/

Bug#473626: Includes binary without source

2008-04-05 Thread Carlos Martín Nieto

On Mon, 2008-03-31 at 19:41 +0200, Sebastian Dröge wrote:
 Package: blam
 Severity: serious
 Version: 1.8.5-1

 Hi,
blam currently contains lib/RSS.NET.dll. There is no source for this
library in the tarball and it's shipped in the package.

This is a violation of DFSG §2. Possible fixes are:

 a) Ship the sources of the library via the diff.gz _AND_ build the
library from these sources. Do not build blam with the old binary as it
makes patching impossible. Convince upstream to ship sources in his
 tarballs!

I'm upstream as well, just so we're on the same page.

I inherited the package this way and the library hasn't changed in over
two years (appart from a couple of enhancements I've made) adn when I
got it, the license was BSD. Since then the library has gone through CC
and it's now propietary and they'll try to sell it to you.

 b) Package RSS.NET in a separate package and build with that. Of course
this package should contain sources ;)

The library is dead upstream and it's absolutely hughe for what it's
used. In fact, I'm currently writing a much smaller library with a
couple of hundred lines of code and the help of XmlSerializer.

For the next upstream release it would be nice if there were no more
binaries in the tarball, you should probably repackage it if upstream is
 not responsive.

The library will almost definitely be ready in less than a month, and I
will then upload another version with the new library.

Bug#402010: How to deal with #402010?

2008-04-05 Thread sean finney
hi,

a few more ideas for you to think about:

- create a user specific to the package, and

1: use a setuid wrapper binary for doing all ldap communications

or

2: use some kind of user-restricted fastcgi type setup instead of standard
apache mod_php/python/whatever

or

3: run a seperate instance of $webserver listening on a different port
(localhost:8080 or similar), and running as the specific user. you can then
drop in a proxy config to make that available from the standard $webserver.

Khalid Aziz wrote:

 Any thoughts?

Mainly, again, what's new about them? - kexec _can_ be used to
load a specified kernel, but that's not the behaviour you get from
automatic reloads handled by kexec-tools. What it does by default
is load /vmlinuz, and that's usually an _old_ kernel.

Also, I'm not keen on firmware (too technical) or reboots (when
you mean restarts that avoid the bootstrapping process). And this
is too much work for one sentence.

How about:

Should kexec-tools handle reboots? If you accept this option,
invocations of shutdown -r will trigger a restart into a kernel
loaded by kexec instead of going through the full system bootloader
  process.

Bug#474358: gdm won't start due to strange interaction with lsb-base functions

2008-04-05 Thread Joao Batista
Package: gdm
Version: 2.20.4-1
Severity: important

gdm won't start through /etc/init.d/gdm due to a strange interaction with
lsb-base_3.1-24 functions,
specifically log_daemon_msg from /lib/lsb/init-functions. This function does
work, however, with other
init scripts (e.g. kdm, mysql etc.), therefore I'm not sure if this issue is
exclusive of gdm or if
it belongs to package lsb-base.

Workaround (temporary?):
Replace in /etc/init.d/gdm the lines
log_daemon_msg first string gdm
with
log_daemon_msg first string ; log_progress_msg gdm

No, it tries to only activate the needed vg. Please show more about your
setup.

For example if you boot from SAN all LUNs will
show up in the initrd, including those which may be part of a cluster and
 should not be activated (yet),

clustered vgs are marked and will never be activated until a functional
cluster is detected (or forced).

The listed
reasons are just a few why you probably don't want to activate all LVs,
and why you usually configure lvm in lvm.conf

What should happen if someone sets a cluster locking lib in lvm.conf
which is not available in the initramfs?

 ignoring this file can
result in a severe loss of data.

No, it does not. Activation does not write to the disks.

Bug#402010: How to deal with #402010?

2008-04-05 Thread Cajus Pollmeier
The problem is that these aspects are not packagable as some kind of
fire and forget installation. I'd prefer the way Roland proposed,
using some kind of

# cat /etc/apache2/conf.d/gosa.conf
Alias /gosa /usr/share/gosa/html
Location /gosa
include /etc/gosa/gosa.secrets
/Location

# cat /etc/gosa/gosa.secrets
RequestHeader set FooPassword very-secret-credentials

The latter file can only be read by root, so the security problem is
as critical as beeing able to read cleartext kerberos or sasldb
passwords as root.

This implementation only requires minimum changes and has no big
overhead on the server side... Uh, and a a2enmod headers from
postinst.

Cheers,
Cajus

hi,

a few more ideas for you to think about:

- create a user specific to the package, and

1: use a setuid wrapper binary for doing all ldap communications

or

2: use some kind of user-restricted fastcgi type setup instead of
standard

apache mod_php/python/whatever

or

3: run a seperate instance of $webserver listening on a different port
(localhost:8080 or similar), and running as the specific user. you
can then
drop in a proxy config to make that available from the standard
$webserver.

Bug#474361: udevsettle in /etc/rcS.d/S03udev always hangs and times out

2008-04-05 Thread sean finney
Package: udev
Version: 0.114-2
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

hi,

for the past month or two, my system has been taking really long to
boot. i recently tracked the problem down to the udevsettle call in the
above mentioned script, which blocks until a timeout before the boot is
continuing.

funny enough, while it is blocking if one hits the prntscrn button while
it's blocking, the script immediately returns with a timeout (otherwise
it takes a minute or so).

i don't know if this is a race condition with udev itself, or maybe a
kernel driver (not using anything really exotic, lsmod output included
below in case it's helpful), or what. but perhaps you will have more
insight?

thanks,
sean

The wireless configuration window for network-manager only offers the
choice between WEP key (hexadecimal) and WEP key (ascii): no WPA
here. Yet wpa_supplicant, when invoked manually (whether with -Dwext
or -Dmadwifi, see below for card model) works perfectly, and enables
WPA as it should. Why is network-manager unaware of this?

Could you attach the output of nm-tool
and the NetworkManager log file (run NetworkManager --no-daemon).

It very much looks like a driver problem though.

Sheridan Hutchinson wrote:

Ok I've spent some time on this and the problem is more widespread than
I thought.

As discussed before, LTM is not being loaded when resuming from suspend
or hibernate, however I also discovered contrary to my previous report,
that LTM is not activated when the laptop boots up from fresh when it's
on battery.

The only instance that I have determined that LTM kicks in as expected
is when Debian is already up-and-running and AC is removed.

There would be a good explanation for all of this if the script
/etc/init.d/laptop-mode is failing somehow. The startup calls and the
on-resume calls to laptop mode tools are done through this script, the
remove-AC-while-up-and-running situation goes through another path.
Could you check that this script is still there, and that it is working?
And that there is a link to the script in /etc/rc2.d?

Cheers,
Bart

Bug#474363: postgresql-8.2: Missing dependencies : libpq5

2008-04-05 Thread Benoit GUERIN
Package: postgresql-8.2
Version: 8.2.7-1~bpo40+1
Severity: important

With this missing dependencies, package libpq5 was dropped by deborphan, and a
restart
on the postgresql daemon failed (unable to open shared lib libq.so.5)
Installing package libpq5 by hand is sufficient to make the daemon work, but I
think
it is not the correct behaviour ...
Please note that this missing dependencies is only concerning the
postgresql-8.2 package
on etch-backports (but is displayed on the debian packages list web interface :
http://packages.debian.org/etch-backports/postgresql-8.2), on lenny, the
dependencies is here.

Bug#474365: update-notifier uses gksu to grant root access even if sudo is used the root

2008-04-05 Thread Anthony Mahé
Package: update-notifier
Version: 0.59.5.debian-1
Severity: important

update-notifier uses gksu to grant root access even if sudo
is used the root user doesn't exist.

If the user uses sudo and has no password defined for the root user,
when clicking on
the icon in the systray, update-notifier will simply ask for a
password that has never been defined in the
system. The workaround is to create a root password (sudo passwd root)
but that's not
straight forward for everybody, thus making the package unusable for
those users.

There should be a way to check wheter or not the root password has
been defined, or check
if the user running the application can be granted administrative
rights using gksudo
first.

It seems to work on some other Debian based distributions using sudo,
I guess they replaced
gksu by gksudo in the code, but that's not a universal solution.

Bug#474364: fmirror: deletes filesystem before downloading

2008-04-05 Thread Michael Braun
Package: fmirror
Version: 2:0.8.4-13
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Hi,

I installed fmirror on a debian etch machine (i686) and did
   [EMAIL PROTECTED] apt-get install fmirror
   [EMAIL PROTECTED] man fmirror
   [EMAIL PROTECTED] cd ~/webbackup/
   [EMAIL PROTECTED] fmirror -s host -u username -S -r . -l . -p
password -T 0
Result: It deleted /bin !!
This also happens if -l . is replaced by -l /home/username/webbackup .

Expected result: download into local dir as given in manual.

Surely I missed leaving root before downloading some ftp data but nevertheless
this is a really bad issue.

Furthermore, it would have removed /home if I had run it unsupervised.

Sincerely,
 M. Braun

It appears that we don't actually ship the Python bindings, so #469011
shouldn't be RC. However, it will become RC if they're enabled.

I believe upstream release 0.8.6f fixes this.

All the opt-*-Patches are optional and are not activated in the official

are you using a self compiled version with some of the optional patches
enabled? Or are you using the packages from e-tobi.net?)

Bug#466075: more information about corrupted database

2008-04-05 Thread Alexander Dahl
In the case mpd fails to start (this is not always the case) the
database is always corrupted in a similar way. There is a single keyword
in which one character is shifted 16 characters forward. I can open the
database (tag_cache) in a text editor, correct this single wrong
character and successfully start mpd then. I give some examples of wrong
database keywords:

Corrupted Must be
- ---
Gunre Genre
Qlbum Album
DqteDate

I had several other corrupted keywords all with this one wrong character
shifted forward. This seems to be one Bit flipped.

e-u is 65h-75h is 01100101b-01110101b

I double checked RAM with Memtest86+ -- no error. No other application
has problems on this machine. I guessed the error appeared always at the
same line or even same byte position in the database, but that's not the
case. However it's in the same region somewhere in the middle of the
database between lines 20 and 30 and always in the keywords not
in the values.

I forgot to mention, this is with Debian Lenny and package version
0.13.1-3 and the same machine as with my initial report. It occurs not
as often as with the previous version but I guess still every fourth or
fifth time I boot the machine.

Bug#402010: How to deal with #402010?

option 3 could work out of the box, though it just requires more initial setup
work to get right in the packaging. i'm not saying it's the Right Way, but
it would provide the necessary compartmentalizing.

 RequestHeader set FooPassword very-secret-credentials

i suspect php users will still be able to find that out, in the same way that
they can read ssl private keys from the webserver's memory (you *did* know
they can do that, right? :)

Bug#471228: Cannot print any more: Print-Job client-error-bad-request: Unsupported character set iso-8859-15!

2008-04-05 Thread Håkon Stordahl
I believe that this problem is related to the issue discussed in the
following upstream bug report:

http://www.cups.org/str.php?L2537

It might also be worth to notice the following entry from
/usr/share/doc/cupsys/changelog.gz:

CHANGES IN CUPS V1.3.4
[...]
- The scheduler did not reject requests with charsets
other than US-ASCII or UTF-8, and the CUPS API
incorrectly passed the locale charset to the scheduler
  instead of UTF-8 (STR #2537)

As far as I understand, this is considered a bug in the client, which
seems to be fixed in 1.3.4 and later. So it seems a bit unlikely that
this problem could be dealt with for the version of cupsys in etch.
However, one way to work around the problem (apart from upgrading),
that at least worked for me, is to run the client in a UTF-8 locale.
Though of course, this might not always be viable.

Bug#370343: Worked out a patch in order to make default file preseedable

2008-04-05 Thread Patrick Winnertz
Sorry, nack on this patch in its current form.

 - The postinst dynamically creates files under /usr/share. State files
like this should only ever be created under /var/lib.
This is no problem.. I can change it fast today.

 - Why are you using a home-grown md5sum solution instead of using ucf?
For an effective use of ucf, please see the samba-common package in
 testing/unstable.
Okay, I'll do
 - Why does SLAPD_SERVICES need to be edited at all in your environment -
what are the settings that you're preseeding, and wouldn't it be
better to try to identify a sensible default for this file? I don't
think the current behavior of this file *is* a sensible default, because
ldapi:/// is missing; but ldap:/// ldapi:/// should be a sensible
default IMHO, excluding ldaps:/// because TLS should be sufficient for
the common case. You do mention in the bug report that you specifically
care about enabling ldaps:///, can you explain why this is needed in
your environment? What clients do you have that can't use TLS?
 - Likewise, why do you need to override the location of slapd.conf, as
opposed to fixing up the standard slapd.conf for your needs? This
wasn't even mentioned before now in your bug report.
We need to include some additional schemes for debian-edu which wouldn't
make sense as default.
In order to have a look on our configuration file please have a look on:
http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/debian-edu/trunk/src/debian-edu-config/etc/ldap/slapd-debian-edu.conf?op=filerev=0sc=0

 - Oh, and making SLAPD_SERVICES a multiselect breaks things for those
users who want to bind to specific IPs.
Oh okay... this should be easy to solve with another debconf question and
some sed magic.

I'm sympathetic to your desire to have the slapd package usable
out-of-the-box for your environment, but I think there needs to be a
clearer rationale for the particular changes you're proposing.
Okay, I'll try to fix these issues.

Greetings
Winnie

Bug#474371: libnss-ldapd: Append duplicate binddn entry during upgrades

Package: libnss-ldapd
Version: 0.6

When I upgrade libnss-ldapd, it append a new binddn entry at the end
of /etc/nss-ldapd.conf in addition to the existing ones. I suspect
the reason is that the binddn value contain a space. It is
cn=Skolelinux ADUser,ou=Service Accounts,dc=skolen,dc=local when I
test it. I also tested with the latest svn version of nss-ldapd, and
the problem is still present there.

For the next upstream release it would be nice if there were no more

The library will almost definitely be ready in less than a month, and I

That's good news... thanks on your work on blam :)

Don't be ridiculous. This a real, silly bug in the package. What
happens as/when/if a user tries to build this package using a machine
 with a common name?

For the record, the l10n NMU I am preparing (but Jörg may prefer
uploading himself) includes a fix for that bug (simply removing the
silly test).

Excellent, thanks. I was going to NMU myself today, but I'll leave it
to you if you're doing it already.

Well - I guess this information would be good for the README. You
think about providing another apache init script + configs? Hmm. But
gosa+php works with other webservers, too. So the packaging overhead
might grow.

Or you force the use of apache-mpm-itk and let it run in a different

Do you have more information about this? I guess this is only the case
for unpatched php instances, isn't it?

nxproxy was packaged as a dependency of qtnx, which is a free nx client.
It is not intended to be run separately unless you know what you are
doing.

Upstream does not provide any documentation and I wanted to upload qtnx
quickly. I should at least note in README.Debian that nxproxy is not
designed to be run by hand and it should probably recommend qtnx or
nxcl. That will be in the next upload.

You do mention in the bug report that you specifically care about enabling

What clients do you have that can't use TLS?

I suspect this is for historic reasons, can someone who actually knows the

If so, we should switch to ldap:/// today :-)

Bug#459420: uswsusp breaks config on upgrade

2008-04-05 Thread Michael Biebl
Hi Peter,

please keep in mind, that /etc/uswsusp.conf is not a conffile but
generated by the maintainer scripts.
Only upgrades to locally modified conffiles are forbidden by the Debian
policy. (I thus don't consider this bug severity serious, but let it Tim
to decide).

The primary interface for configuring /etc/uswsusp.conf seems to be the
debconf interface. So I was wondering if you manually editied
resume device in /etc/uswsusp.conf, so the debconf values where not in
sync anymore.

Bug#474373: rhythmbox: songs that need to be reencoded can not be copied to mtp devices

2008-04-05 Thread Jonas Meyer
Package: rhythmbox

Severity: important

Hi
the upstream bugreport is: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=502771
quoting:
When current HEAD tries to transfer a file to a device, and has to transcode
it, it reports the file size of the original file to libmtp, which results in
an error, and makes RB unable to transfer any tracks it has to transcode.

Please apply the patch in the report until there is a more generic fix.

Thanks, Jonas
