If startup.el does not contain such a notice, yes,

For the reference, the thread leading to this bug report starts at
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/1998/10/msg01607.html.

The overly strict requirement for the notices of changes has been
relaxed in GPL 3, it merely states

The work must carry prominent notices stating that you modified
it, and giving a relevant date.

I think we should close this bug after the removal of the emacs21
package, since the less strict requirement of the GPL 3 is clearly
fulfilled in the emacs22 package. Do you agree, Rob?

Hello Michael,

You reported a segault or panic in samba in bug #501284.

Furthermore, I asked you:

 Package: samba
 Version: 3.0.24-6etch5

 Kernel: 2.6.18-6-686

Is this something you can reproduce regularly ?

If so and if you have a reproducible test case, could you test with a
Debian lenny machine which would have a more recent version of samba?

Otherwise, I'm afraid that the only solution we would have is to close
this bug report as nothing can really be investigated further

Could you send us these details? Without them, we'll have no other
choice than closing the bug.

Bug#509864: RFP: foswiki -- The Free and Open Source Wiki

2008-12-27 Thread Olivier Berger
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: foswiki
  Version : 1.0.0 Beta 1

* URL : http://foswiki.org/Download/
* License : GNU GPL V2+
  Programming Lang: Perl
Description : The Free and Open Source Wiki

Foswiki is an enterprise collaboration and information sharing tool
targeted for professional use in many types of companies: from small
businesses to large organizations.

Foswiki is the old TWiki project under a new name. Restrictions on the
use of the TWiki brand has resulted in many of its developers to
continue the project under the new Foswiki name.

As TWiki was removed from lenny, having foswiki packaged for Debian is
all the more important.

Thanks in advance.

Slovak users think it is worth to apply the attached patch to the Debian

only fix in the Debian package is needed. Would you please apply it?

It seems this bug should be closed, since the patch is already part of

Bug#509759: release-notes: leftover files in /usr/X11R6/bin only applicable for XFree86-Xorg transition

retitle 509759 release-notes: bug in 'make updatepo'?

Uh, it seems at least this entry has been removed in the English
version, but is still present in a lot of languages:

'make updatepo' says there is nothing to be done. Unfortunately I don't
know enough about makefiles to propose a patch :/

Just a reminder for me to fix this.

It seems you already did this a while ago. The emacs21 package in woody
ships a /usr/share/emacs/21.2/site-lisp directory, while the
emacs21-common package in sarge and later contains only a symlink
/usr/share/emacs/21.2/site-lisp - ../../emacs21/site-lisp.

So it seems this bug should be closed, right?

Bug#506673: lintian: shlib-missing-in-control-file and symbols-declared-but-not-shlib wrong for libraries without versions

2008-12-27 Thread Russ Allbery
Raphael Hertzog hert...@debian.org writes:

On libc6 in experimental I see:
 E: libc6: shlib-missing-in-control-file libpcprofile.so for
 lib/libpcprofile.so
 E: libc6: symbols-declared-but-not-shlib libpcprofile.so

But since libpcprofile.so has no version in its soname it simply isn't
representable in the shlib system… so it shouldn't be an error.

I looked at this in some detail today. This particular situation
(libraries with no meaningful version information) are the majority of
those tags issued across the archive, and I agree that they're not the
right tags since those files can't be represented in the shlibs system at
all.

It does look like they can be represented in the symbols system because
the symbols system doesn't have the separate version field and instead
shows the complete SONAME. Is that correct?

Incidentally, we currently have no complete documentation about how the
version field in shlibs actually works, so far as I can tell. All the
documentation we do have says that the version listed in shlibs is the
part after .so. in the SONAME, but library SONAMEs of the form
libfoo-version.so apparently also work fine. It's not intuitively
obvious, once you've realized that, that other things couldn't also work,
so it would be nice to have a more accurate description of exactly what is
happening somewhere. I've seen several different regexes used to try to
extract versions from libfoo-version.so library names and they all
disagree subtly.

What I'm committing for the next release is a patch that will look in
public library directories (ones searched by ldconfig), warn about those
shared libraries with SONAMEs that contain no version information, and
then exclude them from shlibs checks. I'm using the most generous regex
for matching libfoo-version.so style SONAMEs, so basically anything with
a hyphen in it will pass, which means we'll still issue the wrong tag for
a lot of misplaced plugins and private libraries. Libraries without
version information in the SONAME will get a tag saying that private
libraries should be moved to a subdirectory and special cases (such as the
glibc ones) should get an override. I think it's reasonable to ask libc6
to carry an override for weird special cases like libpcprofile.so and
libSegFault.so, since in general we don't want people packaging shared
libraries that can't be represented in shlibs.

Currently, due to how Lintian works internally, this also excludes all
such files from symbols checks as well. If that's not correct, please let
me know.

Bug#504340: djvulibre-plugin/testing and #504340

2008-12-27 Thread Leon Bottou

Let me chime in as the main upstream developper.

Thomas thinks that plugin code can be called from multiple thread
and proposes a patch for locking critical data structures.
If this assumption is correct, Thomas patch seems perfectly sane
On the other hand, I will not include and maintain such additional
complexity upstream without evidence that the assumption is correct.

I understand that debian deadlines can suggest to do differently.
The debian maintainers have the last say about that.

I wrote a little code to check whether Thomas assumption is correct.
Under firefox3 on ubuntu (my laptop), the plugin is always called
from the same thread. There is no crash.

It is possible that iceweasel does things differently.
I'd be glad if someone can test it using the code attached with my
previous post. If iceweasel calls plugins from multiple threads,
it makes sense to include such a patch. It also makes
sense to wonder whether more plugin issues would be solved
by having iceweasel make all plugins calls from the same thread
(something firefox apparently does). I would then add upstream
a locking code with provisions to enable or disable it
from the configure script (djvulibre has to work on lots of platforms.)

If iceweasel does not call plugins from multiple threads,
Thomas patch cannot solve the bug since it addresses a
non existent condition. I do not think then that the patch
should be included upstream.

Another related bug also describes a djvulibre plugin crash
from the kde plugin component nspluginviewer.
This component is not multithreaded. Regardless
of the conclusion of the iceweasel multithreading test,
something is going on there as well.

Finally I would also try to reduce the plugin optimization
level from -O3 to -O2, just to see if improvements appear.
This is another difference between Bastien's experiments
(no crash, plugin compiled from djview4 source with -O2) and
the distribution (crash, plugin compiled from djvulibre
source with -O3)...

In short, my upstream decision will depend on
the result of additional investigation.
Again, I understand that the debian schedule may
incite the debian maintainers to decide otherwise...

Happy new year for all of you.
and warm thanks for the precious help.

- Leon Bottou

Bug#509866: dpkg: Output sometimes suddenly switches to CAPS

2008-12-27 Thread Frans Pop
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.14.23
Severity: important

I've thought about filing this as release critical as it is really weird
behavior and seems like a fairly recent regression from somewhere.
I had already seen this a few weeks ago while using pbuilder and dismissed
it as random weirdness, but I now also see it in Debian Installer.

Attached the full installation log, but here is a sample:
Dec 27 08:13:51 in-target: Selecting previously deselected package busybox.
Dec 27 08:13:51 in-target: (Reading database ...

Dec 27 08:13:56 in-target: SELECTING PREVIOUSLY DESELECTED PACKAGE

Dec 27 08:15:28 in-target: Selecting previously deselected package usbutils.
Dec 27 08:15:28 in-target: (Reading database ...
[...]
Dec 27 08:26:47 in-target: SELECTING PREVIOUSLY DESELECTED PACKAGE EXIM4-CONFIG.
Dec 27 08:26:47 in-target: (READING DATABASE ...

Note that it seems limited to dpkg and that it's not persistent from one
invocation to the next. The output of aptitude (and apt?) remains correct
in lower/mixed case.

I guess the first time I saw this with pbuilder was about a month ago. Before
that I had never seen this behavior.

Any idea what could be causing this switch to all CAPS?
In both cases dpkg is run in a chroot. Could that be relevant?

Cheers,
FJP

Bug#377468: (no subject)

2008-12-27 Thread Leon Bottou
Let me explain my reasonning as the upstream developper.

The plugin api implicitely mandates that one uses
some basic Xt calls to capture gui events from
the browser event loop. With some browsers, one can also
set a flag to use the xembed protocol: it is then
recommended to capture events using glib calls.

In both cases, these are very basic calls
that are unlikely to be ever removed or changed
from either Xt or GLib. Too many programs depend on them.

However it is most important that these calls
affect the data structures of the browser event loop.
In other words, one should be *certain* to use
the same Xt or GLib version as the browser itself.
Using a different version of libX11
would not be nearly as bad...

In my experience, the danger of linking with a different version of Xt
is greater than the danger of seeing a change in a few Xt functions
that haven't changed in the last 20 years...

This reasonning makes sense for the upstream distribution.

In Debian, if you can be certain that all Debian browsers use the same Xt
version, you can link with that one. Then change is quite trivial
since 'configure.ac' contains code to explicitely remove -lXt and -lXext.
I think this is slightly unwise, but without hard feelings.

I also would like to point out that the current djvulibre plugin code,
unmodified, produces binaries that have been shown to work with a large
number of browsers including the original netscape, gecko based browsers,
khtml based browsers and some versions of opera. I believe I have
solid experience in that aspect of plugin programming...

Happy new year to all of you
and thanks for the precious help...

- L.

Bug#509867: [PATCH] Use name and email from git by default

2008-12-27 Thread Robie Basak
Package: git-buildpackage
Version: 0.4.43
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

For users who use different email addresses for different packages (for
example: for personal and work use), use the details as specified by
git's user.name and user.email by default if they are available.

The maintainer creating the release can be expected to have git
configured correctly for commits.

This applies to the trailer only so that multimaint continues to work
for changelog entries from commits as expected.

I plan to get everything done in Ubuntu first, as I have upload rights

I'm thus suggesting you to liberate your work for the community,

I'd encourage you to adopt a generally used license, such as the Open

I've thought about filing this as release critical as it is really weird

I had already seen this a few weeks ago while using pbuilder and dismissed
it as random weirdness, but I now also see it in Debian Installer.

Attached the full installation log, but here is a sample:

Note that it seems limited to dpkg and that it's not persistent from one
invocation to the next. The output of aptitude (and apt?) remains correct
 in lower/mixed case.

But it also applies to the output of the maintainer scripts called by dpkg.

I guess the first time I saw this with pbuilder was about a month ago. Before
that I had never seen this behavior.

Any idea what could be causing this switch to all CAPS?

Not really an idea, but I see a pattern. The switch to CAPS always
seems to happen after a call to set the title in debconf:

Bug#509732: Debian policy doesn't feature RC bugs

The BTS has nothing to do with deciding whether particular bugs are
release critical or not. We indicate to other tools (like britney) the
set of bugs which are RC and the packages that they affect.

I didn't know about it (was relying on bug-maint-info.txt:
Currently, these [bugs] are critical, grave and serious.)

Whether we decide to release with bugs of serverity = serious in
pseudopackages is a decision for the release managers, and the
information for them to make that decision can be made available to
them if it is not already available.

May I know if the BTS is part of that information? If it is IMHO the RC
directive in the Policy would be necessary (this bug is about filing
bugs caused by the Policy that are of severity = serious.)

I am sorry but debian-policy isn't featured in
  http://www.debian.org/Bugs/pseudo-packages

debian-policy is not a pseudo package. It's a real package that is
 released with Debian.

This bug is about the Debian Policy, not about the debian-policy
package. I was mislead to think that bugs about the Policy should be
filed on general because upon reading the Bugs Reporting web page
nothing was said about it (the Policy, not the package):

In any case this should be explained in the web site. In
 http://www.debian.org/Bugs/Reporting it is said:

If you are unable to determine which package your bug report should be
filed against, please send e-mail to the Debian user mailing list asking for
  advice.

If your problem doesn't relate just to one package but some general
Debian service, there are several pseudo-packages or even mailing lists
that you can use to relay your message to us instead.

Here my error was presuming that the Policy was a Debian service. I
should have asked for advice on the Debian user mailing list.

Another bug should be filed on www.debian.org for this.

The documentation describing what to do if you don't know what package
to file a bug against is correct, though patches to make it clearer
 are certainly acceptable.

Indeed.

It should be filed against debian-policy with the appropriate
 severity.

What is the appropriate severity? The current description in
bug-maint-info.txt and the lack of a directive in the Policy Manual
that would allow filing it as serious would make it important,
but the bug is causing a RC bug.

If the error is reported to the list it can remain and the package
with the erroneous policy be released if it is included in the
package and the Policy isn't amended before.

That assumes that the people reading the list won't file the
appropriate bug on the appropriate package. I never known that not to
 be the case.

Can another developer file a serious bug on the debian-policy
package if the mantainer doesn't? According to bug-maint-info.txt a
severe bug can be filed when it violates the Policy or the *mantainer*
considers the *package* unsuitable for release.

If another developer can, please, update the description.

If the error is reported to the Bug Tracking System we are in a
similar case as with the mailing list. Only if a mantainer raises
severity of the debian-policy *package* to serious would the bug be
  considered as RC.

If the bug is actually RC, someone has to recognize it as such and
raise the severity. This isn't a serious problem for packages such as
-policy which are watched by loads of people,

Again, the same problem. If the mantainer is the only person who can
consider the package unsuitable for release then only him can raise the
severity to RC.

 and if a package isn't
watched by people who know, then the bug probably isn't going to
 seriously affect the release anyway.

This goes against the social contract:

4. Our priorities are our users and free software
We will be guided by the needs of our users and the free software
community. We will place their interests first in our priorities.

If it is watched by a user he can't file a RC bug.

The present report is only about Debian Policy bugs, but it could happen
with any other Debian document that affects the release, i.e. the
social contract or the constitution. I know those are foundational
documents and can only be changed by developers, but if the bug is
found by a user he couldn't file a RC bug. If nobody who knows watches
doc-base it could affect the release.

Justification: renders package unusable

I am attempting to restore a PHPBB2 database that was created

this is as important since, for me, it reders the software unusable.

Bug#509872: virtualbox-ose: installing requires to install a new kernel if no debian kernel is found

2008-12-27 Thread Salvo Tomaselli
Package: virtualbox-ose
Version: 1.6.6-dfsg-3
Severity: normal

I am using a kernel from sidux, when i tried to install virtualbox-ose it
wanted to install the latest
debian kernel with virtualbox modules for it. The expected behaviour would be
to install the source
and then ask me to use m-a to compile the module.
Anyway installing the source and creating the module before trying to install
the package makes
the debian kernel dep disappear.

The BTS provides the information as to which bugs have severities

this decision in the BTS by setting the severities.

This bug is about the Debian Policy, not about the debian-policy

They are one and the same. [If you're refering to how Debian actually

Bug#505485: wengophone: Does not refresh tray icon

Hi Alex,

One way to trigger the bug everytime is to enable Kicker tray icon
hiding, then hide some icons (but not WGP).

I tried to replicate the bug, but I was not able to find how to find a
way to enable icon hiding on KDE 4.1 (sorry, I am not a KDE user :) How
can you do that?

Actually, a new upload for qutecom (i.e. the new name for wengophone

Could you try with that one? It has undergone a lot of changes; if the
bug persists, I am forwarding it upstream.

It should be filed against debian-policy with the appropriate

 What is the appropriate severity?

Depends on the bug. I can't think of a non-packaging mistake in
debian-policy that would by itself be a RC bug, but I suppose such a
pathological case could be invented.

That assumes that the people reading the list won't file the
appropriate bug on the appropriate package. I never known that not
  to be the case.

Can another developer file a serious bug on the debian-policy
 package if the mantainer doesn't?

Of course.

According to bug-maint-info.txt a severe bug can be filed when it
violates the Policy or the *mantainer* considers the *package*
 unsuitable for release.

Anyone can file an RC bug. This sentence is talking about the fact
that a maintainer can decide that a package is unsuitable for release
in addition to all of the other things that can make a package
unsuitable for release. I should note too that the canonical location
for this documentation is http://bugs.debian.org, *not* doc-debian.
[doc-debian is a convenience copy.]

and if a package isn't watched by people who know, then the bug
probably isn't going to seriously affect the release anyway.

This goes against the social contract:

[snip SC §4]

If it is watched by a user he can't file a RC bug.

Users *can* and *do* file RC bugs.[1] My point was that if a bug was
filed at the wrong severity, and no one noticed, then presumably the
package isn't popular enough for enough people to care about it to set
the severities appropriately.

Here, the fundamental problem appears to be a misunderstanding of who
can alter severities (anyone) versus who makes the final decision as

Bug#509873: [libgdb-dev] Undefined symbols in libgdb.a

2008-12-27 Thread Mazen NEIFER
Package: libgdb-dev
Version: 6.8-3
Severity: serious

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

fp-ide package needs libgdb.a to add support of debugger inside the IDE.
However the libgdb.a shipped by libgdb-dev package has some problems :
* Missing dependency to libbfd-dev virtual package or at least binutils-dev
profiding it. Please have a look at the end of the log embedded in this mail.
You can get more information in http://bugs.freepascal.org/view.php?id=12636 and
in http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=473955

Bug#509685: ITP: hardlink -- Hardlink multiple copies of the same file

2008-12-27 Thread Joerg Jaspert

 We already have these packages:
   fdupes
   perforate
AFAIK, they do not replace files, they just find them.

Wrong, fdupe from perforate does link them together if one wants to.

Imagine you have two backups, each on a different filesystem. Now you
want to have them both on one filesystem. In this situation, you can use
hardlink to link all common files in the backups together.

Or you just use rsync with --link-dest and don't need a second tool for
it at all.

--
bye, Joerg
That's just f***ing great, now the bar for being a cool guy in free
software just got raised. It used to be you just had to write a million
lines of useful code. Now you've got to get a subpoena from SCO to be cool.

Natural language can be open to multiple interpretations, and for 'worldwide'

Bug#509875: extended partition is too small when creating logical partition at end of volume

2008-12-27 Thread Daniel Pocock

Package: partman-base

This issue was encountered using a lenny i386 CD, the CD was
downloaded/burnt around 2008-09-05

Consider the following volume:

total capacity: 80GB
Primary partitions: 128MB (/boot), 10GB (FAT32), 10GB (NTFS)

The user now chooses to create another 10GB partition, and when
prompted, chooses:

- type: logical (not primary)
- location: end (not beginning)

The partitioner creates a 10GB extended partition at the end of the
disk, and a 10GB logical partition within this space.

The other 50GB, between the end of the third primary partition (NTFS)
and the beginning of the logical partition is unusable.

I believe the correct behaviour would be something like this:

- warn the user in any situation where unusuable gaps will exist after
partition

and/or
- ask the size and location questions twice: once for the extended
partition, and again for the logical partition within the extended partition

and/or
- force the user to do things like this with cfdisk (bug 274290)
and/or
- automatically create an extended partition that uses all available
space (although this is assuming that the user won't replace or resize
the NTFS partition later)

Workaround:
- use gparted to resize the extended partition after installation of
Debian, leaving the logical partition in the same place

  What is the appropriate severity?

Depends on the bug. I can't think of a non-packaging mistake in
debian-policy that would by itself be a RC bug, but I suppose such a
 pathological case could be invented.

An error in the Manual can lead to an RC bug.

That assumes that the people reading the list won't file the
appropriate bug on the appropriate package. I never known that not
   to be the case.

Can another developer file a serious bug on the debian-policy
  package if the mantainer doesn't?

 Of course.

And can another developer file a serious bug if an error was found in
the Manual? If so, please, let the description of Severe in the
canonical location be updated.

 [doc-debian is a convenience copy.]

serious

is a severe violation of Debian policy (roughly, it violates a must
or required directive), or, in the package maintainer's or release
manager's opinion, makes the package unsuitable for release.

If an error was found in the Manual none of the other RC severities
could be applied, and serious would only be appliable if in the package
mantainer's or release manager's opinion, makes the package unsuitable
for release. So not anyone can file a RC bug if an error was found in
the Policy Manual that would lead to RC bugs. If the description is
wrong and, indeed, anyone can file it, then I would appreciate that the
description was updated.

and if a package isn't watched by people who know, then the bug
probably isn't going to seriously affect the release anyway.

My point was that if nobody able to set the severity to serious cared
about it the error could remain and so the RC bugs it could have caused.

Here, the fundamental problem appears to be a misunderstanding of who
can alter severities (anyone) versus who makes the final decision as
to what the severities shall be (maintainers + RMs).

Yes, it is. I understand the description of serious only legitimates
the mantainer to set this severity to the policy package when a bug
about an error in the Manual that can lead to RC bugs is filed.

Bug#509877: ldm: please add support for non-readers login

2008-12-27 Thread L. Redrejo
Package: ldm
Version: 2:2.0.6-4
Severity: wishlist

I'd like to use ltsp in primary schools for children that can not read
and write yet.
In the past I've used gdm with its Face browser feature, using also
pam to allow some faces login without password.
Migrating to ltsp makes me need some similar feature with ldm, otherwise
small children will not be able to use the computers as youngest kids
can not read or they're still learning to read or write.

You can see an example of my previous gdm login at
http://www.educarex.es/linexcolegios/ .

I know kdm can also manage faces, so it's not a weird option. It would
be great adding such feature to ldm, or at least, some icon to be able
to login without typing a login user (for the password it can be avoided
using pam).

Bug#509880: Automatically downloads and executes code

2008-12-27 Thread Enrico Zini
Package: azureus
Version: 3.1.1.0-3.1
Severity: important

Hello,

I've installed and run azureus, and the first thing that it did was to
download an Updater plugin and activating it.

I later found a file called Azureus4.0.0.4.jar automatically added to
the download queue, and once it had downloaded, azureus prompted me to
be restarted, and I had to click Restart later to avoid it doing it
automatically.

So, uhm, without me doing absolutelly anything besides starting the
problem, it goes on without asking and downloads code from somewhere
unspecified then runs it?

No, I mean, seriously?

I feel like as a user I should at the very least be asked first,
possibly with an explanation of what is being downloaded, where from and
why, and how is the downloade authenticated.

Ideally however, by defaults software updates should come through Debian
only, and automatic update gadgets (such as Firefox also has) should be
explicitly turned on by the user.

Ciao,

Enrico

Bug#509879: Missing dependency on libswt-gnome-gtk-3.4-jni and libswt-mozilla-gtk-3.4-jni

2008-12-27 Thread Enrico Zini
Package: azureus
Version: 3.1.1.0-3.1
Severity: serious

Hello,

after solving the cairo dependency, azureus still had problems, and most
widgets would only show a kind of Loading... message.

I tried installing the remaining dependencies of the vuze package
(libswt-gnome-gtk-3.4-jni and libswt-mozilla-gtk-3.4-jni) and now
azureus seems to work.

Ciao,

Enrico

2008-12-27 Thread Enrico Zini
Package: azureus
Version: 3.1.1.0-3.1

Hello,

I did a simple apt-get install azureus and then ran azureus. What I got
was this:

required] (java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Could not initialize class

And an alert message telling me that I should install Cairo.

I installed libswt-cairo-gtk-3.4-jni and that error disappeared.

Bug#509881: Name confusion

2008-12-27 Thread Enrico Zini
Package: azureus
Version: 3.1.1.0-3.1
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

looking at the debian package descriptions, azureus and vuze are
different software: azureus is a bittorrent client, and vuze is a, uhm,
Multimedia BitTorrent client. According to wikipedia, azureus is a
bittorrent client, and vuze is a social networking thing centered on
video sort of like youtube.

Anyway, I needed to download files via bittorrent, so I installed
azureus, and ran azureus. I am still quite puzzled in seeing that the
splash screen says that I'm loading vuze formerly azureus, the window
title says Vuze and I have an On Vuze menu.

I am rather confused as to what I have actually run. In particular, I
dislike social networking sites in general and I would be quite unhappy
to find myself using a software deeply tied with some commercial website
without being clearly told so.

Bug#494921: Fw: Re: jGaramond font license

2008-12-27 Thread Paulo Silva
Maybe replacing Garamond with Gentium would be the best choice, while
there is not free alternate more close to Garamond

Anyway, Claude Garamond died at year 1561
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garamond), i can't doubt a free typeface
based on his original drawings (if and when found) can be cc-nc-sa
since they are public domain from a long time, even knowing Adobe,
Agfa, ITC, etc., has distribution licences of their Garamond digital
typefaces.

 Hi,
A debian user has just requested the inclusion of your jGaramond font
in the distribution. While I've read that you're deprecating and no
more supporting them, it could be still useful to have a free/libre
 Garamond typeface floating around.

I'm thus suggesting you to liberate your work for the community,
releasing it under a free license as this is already being done for a
 lot general interesting font.

I'd encourage you to adopt a generally used license, such as the Open
 Font License (OFL): http://scripts.sil.org/OFL
If you're still in doubt, there is a concise FAQ for it:

 Hello Luca,

 I regret, but I can't do that.

Bug#509882: password limited to seven, not eight characters

2008-12-27 Thread Thijs Kinkhorst
Package: qemu
Severity: important
Tags: security, patch

Hi,

It has been reported that the password setting routine in qemu limits the
password length to 7 instead of 8 characters as intended:
http://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/detail?vulnId=CVE-2008-5714

It would be very desirable to fix this in lenny, because it could be regarded
to be a security issue in a way. Etch seems not affected.

Please reference the CVE id when fixing this issue.

interface CD burner that some years back used to work just fine
with Debian. I just dusted it off, and the drivers fail badly.

When I manually load the pcd driver, I hear the drive spinning,
then an events process quickly grabs 99+% of CPU and the whole
system becomes so sluggish that I barely retain sufficient control
to type halt in a terminal. The halt process was so slow that I
  finally had to power down.

Unplugging the external drive has no effect, suggesting that
something in the driver is spinning.

Does this error still occur with more recent kernel versions?

If so, can you rule out that the hardware is broken?

Afraid not, a few months back during my last move I relocated the drive
in question from the shelf to the recycler. It just did not seem
worth the effort of moving.

I updated from 2.6.18 to 2.6.22 and now the bluetooth dongle is not
working anymore. I get the following error message:

can you please check linux-image 2.6.23 from unstable?
they just install fine in testing, cool thanks.

Unfortunately I get the same error there as well.

Does this error still occur with more recent kernel versions?

The command xfs_fsr from package (xfsdump) which is used to defragment

As this is obviously a kernel issue rather than an installer issue, I'd
suggest that you send this info to the upstream kernel developers (mail
 to sparcli...@vger.kernel.org, CC linux-ker...@vger.kernel.org; or file a
bug report at bugzilla.kernel.org). Just the dmesg output should be
 enough.

I'm also reassigning this report to the Debian kernel team, but your best
bet to get this issue looked into and solved is to contact the upstream
 developers directly.
Note that they may ask you to try with a more recent kernel than 2.6.22.

One thing you could try before doing that is to try an installation using
a netboot image. Sun blades have been notoriously problematic to install
 from CD.

Bug#358867: #364088 - imagemagick: grab does not work

2008-12-27 Thread Luciano Bello
Let me see if I understood correctly this. I'm trying to reproduce this with
current sid (7:6.3.7.9.dfsg1-3) version.

I clicked on 'File-Open-Grab' . I selected an area. This worked.
If I try this again, after File-Open-Grab I get an 'x:' in 'File name' box.
If I remove the 'x:', the function works as is expected. If I leave the 'x:', I
get an error:
'no window with specified ID exists `/x:`: Resource temporarily unavailable'
And display crashes.

Is this your problem? Is the 'delete-x:-workaround' helps you?

[ 873.350039] Kernel panic - not syncing: Aiee, killing interrupt handler!

I've had lockups with self-compiled 2.6.25 kernels on other hardware as
well, all related to hpet_rtc_interrupt; see the LKML archive for the
details. This is the first time I've tried a Debian-packaged 2.6.25, and
it also hangs. The workaround recommended on LKML was to disable
CONFIG_HPET_EMULATE_RTC (it cannot be disabled in the menu, you have to
edit the configuration by hand). This workaround seems to work for me:

 $ uname -a
 Linux boogie 2.6.25 #3 SMP Thu Jun 12 13:32:35 CEST 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
 $ uptime
  15:57:16 up 15 days, 1:43, 13 users, load average: 0.24, 0.57, 0.65

Without the workaround, I never got an uptime more than a couple of
hours. So I suggest applying the workaround to the Debian package as
 well.

Does this error still occur with more recent kernel versions?

Bug#509886: Please add charset specification for current terminal

2008-12-27 Thread Alexander Gerasiov
Package: xfce4-terminal
Version: 0.2.8-5
Severity: wishlist

Hi there.

I switched to xfce from gnome and found one usefull feature missing here:
I'm working with several charset encodings: somewhere utf-8, somewhere old
koi8-r and somewhere cp1251. In gnome-terminal, roxterm and konsole (from kde4)
I can specify encoding for current terminal, but xfce4-terminal miss this
feature.

Best regards, xfce looks really nice (and support for gnomish panel applets is
a very good idea).

implement a workaround in the kernel, the same applies to the Debian
kernel. Thus tagging wontfix.

When removing the ISDN PCMCIA card from the slot, the kernels do:
 1. crash with kernel panic or
 2. flood the console with error messages, which effectly freezes the
 machine or
 3. just produce a little bit of error messages, but ISDN ceases to work
 after replug or
 4. sometimes work again, when plugging the card into the PCMCIA slot
 again.

Most additional information is in the kernel bugzilla at:

Since this a design limitation, which is unlikely to ever be fixed in the

I was not enthousiastic specifically about the rewriting of preinst, which I

Furthermore I have also turned the debconf note into an option to continue the

Of course the best solution would still be to actually detect whether there
would be incompatibilities between the two versions, but we do not have a

Bug#509888: .etckeeper script should take in account ignored files

2008-12-27 Thread Gian Piero Carrubba
Package: etckeeper
Version: 0.23
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

There are cases when running `etckeeper init` fails while running
./.etckeeper because the referenced file (the one ./.etckeeper is trying
to chown|chgrp|chmod) doesn't exist. In that case, the chown|chgrp|chmod
cmd raises an error and etckeeper fails (because of set -e).

This could happen while running init on a cloned repository, if the file
is 'ignored' and doesn't have 'standard' ownership/permissions, or after
a checkout of a previous version, if the file is 'ignored', doesn't have
'standard' ownership/permissions and has been removed after the
just-checked-out commit.

IMHO, two workarounds exist:
1. make pre-commit.d/30store-metadata be aware of ignore-list when
generating .etckeeper
2. let .etckeeper test the existence of a file before trying to apply
stored metadata on it

The attached patch implements the latter one.

Thanks,
Gian Piero.

cannot find a pattern when the prompt is drawn after a command
finishes or when it is not --- seems random.

The allegro-demo and allegro-example packages in etch are built from

Security uploads of allegro4.1 will need these two packages manually

Natural language can be open to multiple interpretations, and for 'worldwide'
to mean 'in each and every jurisdiction in the world' is just one of several
possible ones. Perhaps you can suggest something that in your view more
accurately describes the IDEA situation and is less open to confusion?

If IDEA is patented worldwide doesn't mean that it is patented everywhere
in the world, I can only guess what the phrase means. Maybe it means that
it is patented on every country that allows software patents, but I don't
know if that's true.

But based on the phrase we can tell that IDEA is patented in a number of
countries. Perhaps just saying that would be fine?

In any case, please don't say an algorithm is patented worldwide, it creates
a false perception that software patents are universaly accepted, even if that
wasn't your intention.

Thanks!
