Bug#525513: icedove: Does not remember Properties - Check this folder for new messages setting.
Package: icedove Version: 2.0.0.19-1 Severity: normal Recently, icedove no longer remembers the Check this folder for new messages checkbox for my IMAP folders. If I check the box, then click Ok and then re-open the properties, the checkbox is unchecked again. This is annoying, as I use procmail to filter all mailinglist mail into different inboxes and depend on a MUA that tells me what folder has new mail. PS. Package: virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.26-2-amd64 Followup-For: Bug #524125 When I was in 2.6.26-1-amd64, I modprobed virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.26-1-amd64 and when I was in 2.6.26-2-amd64, I modprobed virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.26-2-amd64. I went back to the first kernel and am therefore currently running the 2.6.26-1-amd64 kernel with virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.26-1-amd64. I am running the 2.6.26-1-amd64 kernel because when I install virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.26-2-amd64 in the 2.6.26-2-amd64 kernel, I cannot use my internet at all. Is that what you asked when you said Are you sure you modprobe'd the same modules when running 2.6.26-1? As for module-assistant, I don't know what that is. Bug#525516: udev: eth0 stopped working - renamed to eth3 (driver: e100)
Package: udev Version: 0.141-1 Severity: important After upgrading udev from 0.125-7 to 0.141-1 with the rest of available upgrades, and rebooting, my eth0 (plain ethernet, not wireless) got renamed to eth3, and thus stopped working. There seems to have been a change in udev rules checking, as this was present in persistent net rules: # PCI device 8086:1050 (e100) ACTION==add, SUBSYSTEM==net, DRIVERS==?*, SYSFS{address}==00:0f:ea:3e:40:84, NAME=eth0 # FireWire host adapter 000fea0a00394e04 (/class/net/eth1) ACTION==add, SUBSYSTEM==net, DRIVERS==?*, SYSFS{address}==00:0f:ea:0a:00:39:4e:04, NAME=eth1 # PCI device 1814:0201 (rt2500) ACTION==add, SUBSYSTEM==net, DRIVERS==?*, SYSFS{address}==00:11:09:bf:05:d8, NAME=ra0 # USB device 0421:044f (rndis_host) SUBSYSTEM==net, DRIVERS==?*, ATTR{address}==00:14:a7:dc:d1:3a, NAME=eth2 Apparently, the first line did not match (why?) and the following one got created: # PCI device 0x8086:0x1050 (e100) SUBSYSTEM==net, ACTION==add, DRIVERS==?*, ATTR{address}==00:0f:ea:3e:40:84, ATTR{type}==1, KERNEL==eth*, NAME=eth3 I've seen differences between rules attributes (most notably SYSFS - ATTR and an added ATTR{type}==1). If I understand this correctly, the missing ATTR{type} would match any ATTR{tpye} so it's not that. Then it must be that udev stopped understanding the SYSFS syntax ?? Please do not suggest me to clean up the file. I already know how to do that. What I am saying is the upgrade broke my system, while it should have taken care of any needed changes. Looks related to the first change on version 0.140-2. Also it might be related to the upstream change from from v135 to v136: require non-SYSFS_DEPRECATED 2.6.20+ kernel. Since v129 (which I never had) a warning is printed about that, and I looked for it, and it is actually present. Does this mean that my Debian packaged kernel is somehow obsolete? This is possible, as it appears like there is a new kernel package available. But if this is the problem, a dependency is missing somewhere ;-) Thank you very much for any advice. If I can do any testing for you, I will be happy to do it. All previous versions work, all future versions fail. However, I'm afraid I need to blow some dust off my Make fu to even fully understand that change. Jonas, any idea what broke here? Right, that's where it broke. And I am to blame for that :-( That commit switched from using the earlier package-independent common-install-* targets to the slightly later package-dependent install/* targets. My change did not take into account packages relying on python installation being finished at the time of install/* targets. In other words, the problem is not that python install rule does no longer get invoked, but that it now gets invoked in parallel (or in undefined order of) other install/* rules. Concretely for calibre, it seems to me that the install/* target is being abused for non-install routine (it is cleanup of other installs, not additional - independent - install). I believe it would be better for that package to _depend_ on install rule instead _be_ one. Like this: install/calibre:: calibre-fixup calibre-fixup: rm -r ... Still, from the perspective of this CDBS backwards-compatibility bug, above is only a workaround, not calibre approach is wrong. I really want to keep the CDBS change (i.e. not revert r341) but acknowledge that backwards-compatibility needs to be improved somehow. As I wrote in the commit message, the change both cleans up some ugly restrictions (use of ifeq) and paves the way for future improvements: Use package-specific build targets and avoid ifeq constructs. ifeq constructs are evil: They are resolved early, so any variables used needs to be declared _before_. CDBS snippets should ideally allow options declared either before or after including the snippets. This change gets rid of some of some needless ifeq constructs. Also, the replacement build targets are carefully constructed to use trailing binary package names, so $(cdbs_curdir) is properly expanded, so allows per-package customized options. Bug#522367: request-tracker3.8: General update after the debconf review process
Dear Debian maintainer, On Thursday, March 19, 2009, I sent you a notification about the beginning of a review action on debconf templates for request-tracker3.8. Then, I sent you a bug report with rewritten templates and announcing the beginning of the second phase of this action: call for translation updates. Translators have been working hard and here is now the result of their efforts. Please consider using it EVEN if you committed files to your development tree as long as they were reported. The attached tarball contains: - debian/changelog with the list of changes - debian/control with rewrites of packages' descriptions - debian/templates with all the rewritten templates file(s) - debian/po/*.po with all PO files (existing ones and new ones) As said, please use *at least* the PO files as provided here, preferrably over those sent by translators in their bug reports. All of them have been checked and reformatted. In some cases, formatting errors have been corrected. The patch.rfr file contains a patch for the templates and control file(s) alone. Please note that this patch applies to the templates and control file(s) of your package as of Thursday, March 19, 2009. If your package was updated in the meantime, I may have updated my reference copybut I also may have missed that. This is indeed why I suggested you do not modified such files while the review process was running, remember..:-) It is now safe to upload a new package version with these changes. Please notify me of your intents with regards to this. There is of course no hurry to update your package but feel free to contact me in case you would need sponsoring or any other action to fix this. -- patch.tar.gz Description: Binary data --- request-tracker3.8.old/debian/templates 2009-03-15 08:34:34.229522268 +0100 +++ request-tracker3.8/debian/templates 2009-04-03 08:30:05.747822158 +0200 @@ -1,8 +1,17 @@ +# These templates have been reviewed by the debian-l10n-english +# team +# +# If modifications/additions/rewording are needed, please ask +# debian-l10n-engl...@lists.debian.org for advice. +# +# Even minor modifications require translation updates and such +# changes should be coordinated with translators and reviewers. + Template: request-tracker3.8/rtname Type: string -_Description: Name for this RT instance: +_Description: Name for this Request Tracker (RT) instance: Every installation of Request Tracker must have a unique name. - The domain name or an abbreviation of the name of your organization are + The domain name or an abbreviation of the organization name are usually good candidates. . Bug#525436: cdbs: distutils does not call setup.py install any more
Hello Jonas, Jonas Smedegaard [2009-04-25 9:36 +0200]: That commit switched from using the earlier package-independent common-install-* targets to the slightly later package-dependent install/* targets. Ah, I see. My change did not take into account packages relying on python installation being finished at the time of install/* targets. If there's a more appropriate target I should be using, I'm all ears. In other words, the problem is not that python install rule does no longer get invoked, but that it now gets invoked in parallel (or in undefined order of) other install/* rules. So if I first include distutils.mk and then define an install/foo:: rule, my own rule isn't guaranteed to be invoked later than the distutils ones? I always understood :: as an append operator, not throw it into the set. It's entirely possible that I was wrong all the time, of course. install/calibre:: calibre-fixup calibre-fixup: rm -r ... I don't understand how this would help? Wouldn't this mean that calibre-fixup would run _before_ install/calibre (since it is now a dependency), thus aggravating the problem even further? Still, from the perspective of this CDBS backwards-compatibility bug, above is only a workaround, not calibre approach is wrong. If calibre is the only (or amongst very few) packages which break because they used the install target wrongly, I'm fine with keeping current cdbs and fixing calibre's debian/rules accordingly. Basically, I need to do a cleanup at a point when setup.py install was run already, but dh_install* etc. didn't start yet. The reason is that the extra libraries must not go into the .debs, and doing the cleanup after all the dh_* magic makes it much harder to ensure that none of the dh_* stuff copied the files to anywhere. Package: postgresql-8.3 Version: 8.3.7-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable I installed postgresql using the command: aptitude update; aptitude install postgresql (postgresql depends on postgresql-8.3) I try to start postgresql by running this command: /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.3 start However, it does not start. When I tried to debug the /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.3 and the /usr/share/postgresql-common/init.d-functions scripts, I found that the later is trying to look for /etc/postgresql/8.3 directory. But, as I mentioned this directory is missing. I found the following postgresql related .deb files: nifty:/var/cache/apt/archives# ls postgresql*.deb /var/cache/apt/archives/postgresql_8.3.7-1_all.deb /var/cache/apt/archives/postgresql-8.3_8.3.7-1_amd64.deb /var/cache/apt/archives/postgresql-client-8.3_8.3.7-1_amd64.deb /var/cache/apt/archives/postgresql-client-common_98_all.deb /var/cache/apt/archives/postgresql-common_98_all.deb However, none of them have the /etc/postgresql directory. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages postgresql-8.3 depends on: ii libc6 2.9-4 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcomerr21.41.3-1 common error description library ii libgssapi-krb5-2 1.6.dfsg.4~beta1-9 MIT Kerberos runtime libraries - k ii libkrb5-3 1.6.dfsg.4~beta1-9 MIT Kerberos runtime libraries ii libldap-2.4-2 2.4.11-1 OpenLDAP libraries ii libpam0g 1.0.1-7Pluggable Authentication Modules l ii libpq58.3.6-1PostgreSQL C client library ii libssl0.9.8 0.9.8g-15 SSL shared libraries ii libxml2 2.7.3.dfsg-1 GNOME XML library ii locales 2.9-4 GNU C Library: National Language ( ii postgresql-client-8.3 8.3.7-1front-end programs for PostgreSQL ii postgresql-common 98 PostgreSQL database-cluster manage ii ssl-cert 1.0.23 simple debconf wrapper for OpenSSL ii tzdata2009b-1time zone and daylight-saving time postgresql-8.3 recommends no packages. Bug#525525: do not separate stanzas with empty lines when showing Description field only
Package: dctrl-tools Version: 2.14 Severity: normal Hi, I was used to see the output of the various grep-dctrl tools as stanzas separated by empty lines. That makes such output RFC822 compliant and parseable with related tools, including python-debian. However, I noticed that if I specify as output field only Description, the empty lines separating output stanzas are not there. Quick examples to show the problem: This is OK: $ grep-available -s Description,Enhances '' Description: create device mappings for partitions Kpartx can be used to set up device mappings for the partitions of any partitioned block device. It is part of the Linux multipath-tools. Description: A Comprehensive English Dictionary This package contains the GNU version of the Collaborative snip dictd package, or another RFC 2229 compliant server. Description: tool for building TAGS files from O'Caml sources otags is a tool for building TAGS files for emacs and vi. TAGS files provide the editor with an index table, mapping important Note that I've chosen Enhances to show that it does not matter whether the field actually appears in the matched stanza, what it matters is to have it as part of -s. The following on the contrary is not OK: $ grep-available -s Description '' Description: create device mappings for partitions Kpartx can be used to set up device mappings for the partitions of any partitioned block device. It is part of the Linux multipath-tools. Description: A Comprehensive English Dictionary This package contains the GNU version of the Collaborative snip dictionary server in the dictd package. The GCIDE contains the Description: tool for building TAGS files from O'Caml sources otags is a tool for building TAGS files for emacs and vi. TAGS files provide the editor with an index table, mapping important The problem is reproducible with the various grep-* tools. I've found no other fields acting as Description, so my best guess is that the bug relies somewhere in the code handling multi-line fields. Bug#525436: [Build-common-hackers] Bug#525436: cdbs: distutils does not call setup.py install any more
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 On Sat, Apr 25, 2009 at 10:42:43AM +0200, Martin Pitt wrote: Jonas Smedegaard [2009-04-25 9:36 +0200]: In other words, the problem is not that python install rule does no longer get invoked, but that it now gets invoked in parallel (or in undefined order of) other install/* rules. So if I first include distutils.mk and then define an install/foo:: rule, my own rule isn't guaranteed to be invoked later than the distutils ones? I always understood :: as an append operator, not throw it into the set. It's entirely possible that I was wrong all the time, of course. I might be wrong, but yes, my understanding of :: rules is that even if they often in practice run in the order defined, that is not ensured. Besides, ideally CDBS snippets should not require to be declared in a specific order, even if some make expressions really do keep order - CDBS should try to avoid those, then (as is the case if ifeq). install/calibre:: calibre-fixup calibre-fixup: rm -r ... I don't understand how this would help? Wouldn't this mean that calibre-fixup would run _before_ install/calibre (since it is now a dependency), thus aggravating the problem even further? Stupid me - above is completely upside down. The following should work: common-binary-arch common-binary-indep:: calibre-fixup calibre-fixup: install/calibre rm -r ... Or to be exact, above works using buildcore.mk, and I believe also using python-distutils.mk and debhelper.mk - if using other snippets too, you may need to adjust to the additional rules you want it to be invoked in-between. Makes sense. As already said, it is not exactly wrong of you to use the install/* target, but as it really is a post-install routine it makes better sense to treat it as such. Help investigating if any other package uses python-distutils.mk and add custom install/* rules is much appreciated! \n Hello, I am sorry, but I do not agree that this bug can be closed. There remains at least two problems in this translation: 1. after a non-option argument %s is translated as après un argument qui n'est pas une option %s. This translation is misleading: is not clear thar %s is related to argument, and not to option. A better translation can be: après un argument %s qui n'est pas une option. To try to explain the difference in english, it is like saying after an argument which is not an option %s instead of after an argument %s which is not an option. 2. but options are not positional is wrongly translated as mais les options sont positionnelles, where the negation not is lost. It should be something like mais les options ne sont pas positionnelles. Then, from a stylistic point of view, I am not fully statisfied with the translation. I prefer, for example, the one sugested by François Poulain in http://benji1.traduc.org/pipermail/traduc/2007-March/004934.html. This may however be just a matter of personal taste, and is not an objection to closing the bug. Bug#525516: udev: eth0 stopped working - renamed to eth3 (driver: e100)
Same here, using kernel 2.6.29-1-686 from unstable. Old entry in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules was # PCI device 1039:0900 (sis900) ACTION==add, SUBSYSTEM==net, DRIVERS==?*, SYSFS{address}==00:0a:e6:d5:5f:99, NAME=eth0 which led, approximately due to the fact that the SYSFS entry is no more recognized correctly by udev 0.141-1 to creating a new rule for the same device # PCI device 0x1039:0x0900 (sis900) SUBSYSTEM==net, ACTION==add, DRIVERS==?*, ATTR{address}==00:0a:e6:d5:5f:99, ATTR{type}==1, KERNEL==eth*, NAME=eth1 and so the network interface was renamed from eth0 to eth1 (which had no configuration in /etc/network/interfaces), resulting in system starting up with no valid network interface at all after next reboot. Isn't it possible to at least deploy a warning message to the user at udev update, containing a hint that he SHALL review 70-persistent-net.rules for entries containing deprecated values which may lead to non-working networking? -- Best regards, Edgar Sippel mailto:dont.spam...@gmx.de -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#525495: Please provide a minimal hal package
Hi, On Sat, 25 Apr 2009 00:59:16 +0200 Michael Biebl bi...@debian.org wrote: Michael Biebl wrote: Hi Harry, I agree with you, that HAL has somewhat grown into a kitchensync over its lifetime. Unfortunately it's not easily, if at all possible to rip HAL apart in smaller pieces (that's why I mark the bug as wontfix). My main concerns are callouts and addons. These are enabled in /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/*.fdi. So these fdi files could be put in a separate package and people who don't care about this cruft could choose to not install it. There is, however, a much simpler solution: attached you can find fdi files that completely disable addons and callouts. Could you please add them to the package as examples and mention them in README.Debian? Or maybe put them in preferences.fdi as commented out blocks. With these files in place, the only root process remaining is hald_runner. But since all callouts are removed, the risk should be minimised (modulo bugs in hald, like buffer overflows, that could be exploited to invoke hald_runner with arbitrary scripts). On the other hand, there is work underway to replace HAL with something new, more modular, called DeviceKit, where you have separate components (e.g. DeviceKit-power, DeviceKit-disks), which can be installed separately and will deprecate/replace HAL step by step. See also: DeviceKit ITP: http://bugs.debian.org/521361 DeviceKit-power ITP: http://bugs.debian.org/521363 DeviceKit-disks ITP: http://bugs.debian.org/521364 In my opinion still the wrong approach. Information about hardware should be made available in a file system similar to sysfs, maybe a fuse fs. There's no need for daemons, D-Bus, etc. The interface would then just be regular file operations and notification would be done using inotify. But at least it's an improvement over HAL. Still it will take time until Xorg moves to DeviceKit, if ever. Cheers, harry 99-disable-addons.fdi Description: XML document 99-disable-callouts.fdi Description: XML document

Bug#525540: kwallnetmanager: looses pass key strokes when opening the wallet
Package: kwalletmanager Version: 4:4.2.2-1 Severity: important Hello, Just upgraded from KDE 3.5.10 to 4.2.2 from unstable. As per my older configuration, the KDE password widgets are printing 3 dots instead of just 1, whenever a key is pressed. However, this has now become horribly slow. It takes around half a second between pressing the key, and the dots showing up on screen. Worse, key strokes are lost altogether when if I don't pace between key presses. For some reason, this only seem to affect password widgets - clear text input works just fine. Opening the wallet when KDE starts has become a huge pain. Admittedly, this is probably a bug in an underlying library, though I have no idea which. Dear Nicolas, Comments on (snippet of code comments, and your words): * but users must exec login which will use the existing utmp * entry (will not overwrite remote hostname). --marekm My point would be: In case login is setuid, shall we require that it is called with exec login. That would be my preference. Then, how to enforce this? (note the point is not to enforce this is all cases, but to make sure regular user will not leave a opened session). If login is not setuid then it cannot be used in that fashion anyway. So this is not about current Debian or Ubuntu. In my experience, if users want something, they will get it with some worse means. If we do not let them run login directly, then they will run telnet instead which is probably much more wasteful; they will not use exec login or su, because are not familiar with those. There is not much point in protecting users from own foolishness. But mainly, exec login cannot possibly work in a PAM environment, but will fail/die and lose the user session; users should not be tricked into doing that. Presumably the user logged in with login (e.g. telnet, may not apply for ssh or xterm); then login done a fork before running the shell; any utmp entry refers to the PID of the parent login. Incidentally, seems rather wasteful to have login waiting to pam_close_session and telnetd waiting to clear utmp. Bug#525550: libradiusclient-ng2 - how to get the radiusclient binary installed
Package: libradiusclient-ng2 Version: 0.5.5-1 Hi Mark, I got your address listed as one of the maintainer of the libradius-ng package. I have noticed that, when installing both packages libradiusclient-ng-dev and libradiusclient-ng2, the radiusclient binary is missing. However if I download and install it manually from the sources I can run it just fine. Can u please let me know whether this is the desired behaviour or shall I get the radiusclient utility out of some other sources?
