Seems worthwhile to change adduser how you suggest to me, is
there a bug filed to this end?

adduser has had bugs filed in the past asking for uid to be equal
to gid by default, and I have so far rejected them as not worth
the complexity for the aesthetic pleasure of having numbers
match. Is there some problem with username == primary group name?

pam_umask requires both username == primary group name and uid ==
gid before it will assume UPG are in place when using its
'usergroups' option, and I am not willing to diverge from upstream
on this as this would mean admins coming from other systems may get
an unpleasant surprise when they find that Debian gives a more
relaxed umask than they were expecting in some corner cases.

So either someone should convince Linux-PAM upstream to change the
behavior of pam_umask, or adduser should enforce the same rules as
other implementations, if pam_umask is to be involved here. Beyond
that, I have no particular opinion on this question.

That's the first useful argument I've heard for changing adduser's
behavior. Interoperability with other software is a useful goal, and
when I was arguing it wasn't worth the complexity, either pam_umask
didn't exist or I was unaware of it. I'll try to get this change into
 squeeze.

Bug#583938: No optimal way to tag when building from patch-queue/* branch

 Hi,

 With this gbp.conf:

 [DEFAULT]
 debian-branch = debian
 upstream-branch = upstream
 pristine-tar = True

 [git-buildpackage]
 debian-branch = patch-queue/debian
 tarball-dir = ../tarballs/
 export-dir = ../build-area/

There is no easy way to tag the release.

When building from patch-queue/debian with --git-tag the HEAD of this
branch is tagged instead of the debian branch which is wrong.
And if I try to tag with --git-tag-only from the debian branch it told
 me it's the wrong branch.
That's actually true. Since patch-queue branches are the best way to
deal with source format 3.0 (quilt) packages we should really make this
more obvious. What I'm currently doing is to pass
--debian-branch=patch-queue/debian to git-buildpackage and do the
--tag-only from the debian branch itself.

So using something like --use-patch-queue which switches to the pq
branch before the build and back afterwards (so the tag apears in the
correct location) might be a good solution.

Bug#583979: sudo's pam config not including common-session modules

2010-05-31 Thread C. Gatzemeier
Package: sudo

PAM modules like pam_umask, limits and pam_env don't work with sudo
because no common-session modules are included in sudo's pam config
file.

/etc/pam.d/sudo should be shipped containing the following line:

@include common-session-noninteracative

If sudo -i would really need it, sudo may use and ship two separate
configs /etc/pam/sudo-noninteractive and /etc/pam.d/sudo-interactive,
and @include common-session in the latter. But sudo -i should
be fine with using the noninteractive auth process config most of the
time.

Sudo seems to support pam sessions modules since version 1.7
http://www.sudo.ws/pipermail/sudo-users/2005-May/002520.html
but they don't get loaded yet.

BTW:
Sudo seems to be patched to parse /etc/environment itself. With sudo
correctly iplementing pam sessions that hack can be reverted.

Bug#433779: asterisk doesn't retry SIP registrations if DNS is not available

found 433779 asterisk/1:1.6.2.7-1
user initscripts-ng-de...@lists.alioth.debian.org
usertag 433779 + missing-dependency
thanks

hi,

it appears that asterisk is incorrectly treating DNS resolution failure
during SIP registration as a 404 not found SIP response.

when my system boots, asterisk is started after my recursive DNS server,
and i see this in /var/log/asterisk/messages:

[May 31 17:36:41] WARNING[1689] acl.c: Unable to lookup 'inbound23.vitelity.net'
[May 31 17:36:41] WARNING[1689] acl.c: Unable to lookup 'outbound.vitelity.net'

peer found
[May 31 17:36:41] WARNING[1704] chan_sip.c: Got 404 Not found on SIP register
to service edmond...@inbound23.vitelity.net, giving up

it seems to be impossible for asterisk to have received a 404 not
found response from the SIP peer if DNS is not available, and indeed i
verified with a packet sniffer that no SIP packets were sent or
received.

it looks like there are two bugs here:

1) asterisk should treat DNS resolution failures as transient network
failures, not SIP failures, and be subject to retrying the registration.
asterisk made no attempt to retry the registration after the initial DNS
failure.

2) /etc/init.d/asterisk contains the following LSB header:

### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides: asterisk
# Required-Start:$remote_fs
# Required-Stop: $remote_fs
# Should-Start: dahdi mysql postgresql
# Should-Stop: mysql postgresql
# Default-Start: 2 3 4 5
# Default-Stop: 0 1 6
# Short-Description: Asterisk PBX
# Description: Controls the Asterisk PBX
### END INIT INFO

if i'm not mistaken, on systems with parallel booting enabled this means
it would be possible for asterisk to start before the network is up or
name resolution is available. i believe that $named and $network should
be added to Should-Start.

the default 127.0.1.1 on Debian? Do you mind if your software diverges
 in Debian somewhat?

Hmm, I see no reason why 127.0.0.2 should be a better choice than
127.0.1.1, or vice versa. Can you come up with a reason?

Given that one is as good as the other 127.0.0.2 looks a bit more
straighforward to me, and I think that generally docs should be fixed to
follow what the code does, not the other way round, so I'd probably vote
for changing your manual, and keep the code in place. That said, I
think this is really a minor issue, and I think it wouldn't be really
that bad if debian would deviate here from the rest of the world. So go
ahead with 127.0.1.1 if you want to and really don't want to fix the
documentation instead. You have my blessing that that is OK.

On top of that, if you can make up a good reason I'd be willing to
change the upstream to 127.0.1.1, btw. So, convince me!

100 dialogs were present. This was with Gnome. I suspect there might
be some bad interaction with sssd going on, where some automatic
renewal is done after krb-auth-dialog present the dialogs.

I would prefer it if the previous related dialog was removed (as in
about to expire is removed when the expired dialog show up) when a
new dialog is shown, to make sure only the current relevant
information is presented with the visible dialogs. Any hope of having
 such setup implemented?
Could you check with at least 0.15 and attach the gconf information if
it still shows dialogs? This shouldn't happen since it's supposed to use
desktop notifications or are you running with:

Bug#583954: fstab doesn't mount external USB-drive, but mount -a does

2010-05-31 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
This is probably because of the fundametal problem with the current
boot system in Debian, and the fact that the Linux kernel have become
event based and it is not possible to know in advance when a device
will be available during boot. It is basicly a race condition during
boot because the kernel return from kernel module loadin before the
bus handled by a kernel module is scanned. :)

To solve it, I believe we need to move to a event based boot system.
See URL: http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2009/09/msg3.html
for more information.

I am sure you find similar bug reports against the initscripts
package, even if it can't be solved by there without a structural
change in the way we handle boots, fsck and mounts. :)

Ubuntu uses upstart to get an event based boot system, and this is the
reason your external USB disk is mounted correctly there. :)

Happy hacking,

Bug#583315: 2.6.32-5-amd64: overheating

2010-05-31 Thread Adnan Hodzic
 One of three things happened:
 - You are running a CPU hog
 - The cooler is failing
 - You moved the laptop and it is no longer cooled properly

No, unfortunately none of this is happening. I let couple of days pass
and keep an eye on what's happening. When I'm compiling, watching a
video temperature goes up to 80C. But even just regular browsing
get's my temperature up to 60C. I've been keeping my system up to
date, even kernel was updated along with fancontrol from the time I
submitted this bug, but I still have this problem.

Please re-assign this bug to whatever you thing the problem might be,
but even basic stuff is getting my temperature way to high.

If you're interested this was bug that was happening on Ubuntu and
that eventually got fixed in my case. I hope it could give you some
pointers:

I have problem with overheating, I just moved to 2.6.32-5 from
2.6.32-trunk and temperature has risen drastically.

Fan is working just fine, but the temperature is constantly around:

 temp1:       +82.0°C  (crit = +127.0°C)
 temp2:       +80.0°C  (crit = +100.0°C)

 One of three things happened:
 - You are running a CPU hog
 - The cooler is failing
 - You moved the laptop and it is no longer cooled properly

Unless 'top' shows you a large figure for 'system time' there is no
 kernel bug here.

 Ben.

Well, actually this bug is of grace rather than gsfonts.
Squeeze will drop defoma. Most of packages include fonts, ghostscript,
and gsfonts already dropped and won't revert.

I believe grace has to replace grace.defoma with another structure,
if it needs a dynamic font configuration. (I'll try to help.)

Temporally I'd like to downgrade severity of this gsfonts bug to
migrade #583729 fix to Squeeze ASAP.

Bug#583982: RFP: swftools -- collection of utilities for working with Adobe Flash files (SWF)

2010-05-31 Thread Nelson A. de Oliveira
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: swftools
  Version : 0.9.0
Upstream Author : Matthias Kramm, Rainer Böhme, De Clarke. Contact:
swftools-com...@nongnu.org
* URL : http://www.swftools.org/
* License : GPL, LGPL
  Programming Lang: C
Description : collection of utilities for working with Adobe Flash files
(SWF)

Copy and paste from its homepage:

SWFTools is a collection of utilities for working with Adobe Flash files
(SWF files). The tool collection includes programs for reading SWF files,
combining them, and creating them from other content (like images, sound
files, videos or sourcecode). SWFTools is released under the GPL.
The current collection is comprised of the programs detailed below:

* PDF2SWF A PDF to SWF Converter. Generates one frame per page. Enables you
to have fully formatted text, including tables, formulas, graphics etc.
inside your Flash Movie. It's based on the xpdf PDF parser from Derek B.
  Noonburg.
* SWFCombine A multi-function tool for inserting SWFs into Wrapper SWFs,
contatenating SWFs, stacking SWFs or for basic parameter manipulation
  (e.g. changing size).
* SWFStrings Scans SWFs for text data.
SWFDump Prints out various informations about SWFs, like contained
images/fonts/sounds, disassembly of contained code as well as cross-reference
  and bounding box data.
* JPEG2SWF Takes one or more JPEG pictures and generates a SWF slideshow from
them. Supports motion estimation compression (h.263) for better compression
  of video sequences.
* PNG2SWF Like JPEG2SWF, only for PNGs.
* GIF2SWF Converts GIFs to SWF. Also able to handle animated gifs.
* WAV2SWF Converts WAV audio files to SWFs, using the L.A.M.E. MP3 encoder
  library.
* AVI2SWF Converts AVI animation files to SWF. It supports Flash MX H.263
compression. Some examples can be found at examples.html. (Notice: this
tool is not included anymore in the latest version, as ffmpeg or mencoder
  do a better job nowadays)
* Font2SWF Converts font files (TTF, Type1) to SWF.
* SWFBBox Allows to read out, optimize and readjust SWF bounding boxes.
* SWFC A tool for creating SWF files from simple script files. Includes
support for both ActionScript 2.0 as well as ActionScript 3.0.
* SWFExtract Allows to extract Movieclips, Sounds, Images etc. from SWF files.
* AS3Compile A standalone ActionScript 3.0 compiler. Mostly compatible with
  Flex.

Bug#583983: kopete: 'The process for the file protocol died unexpectedly.' message on start. No taskbar notifications, no smiles onmessage text, no styles

2010-05-31 Thread Eleneldil G. Arilou
Package: kopete
Version: 4:4.4.3-2
Severity: important
Tags: squeeze

kopete version 4:4.4.3-2

On the application start it shows the message box with this message: 'The
process for the file protocol died unexpectedly.' -- and proceedes start
normally.

In the chat window it can not show emoticon pictures (showing placeholder),
since I can see them in the Configuration - Chat Window - Emoticins dialog.
The installation kdeartwork-emoticons package has added emoticon themes, but
they also aren't show in chat.

Trying to reinstall the kopete package, I've also lost all message window
styles. The mesage 'Chat style could not be found, or is invalid.' is shown
instead.

And the most uncomfortable effect: it doesn't show notifications in the taskbar
(no matter that I've checked notification options in the configuration). So I
have to look at my contactlist again and agian to find if there are any
messages.

Even so, defoma will be removed (or at least become obsolete) in Squeeze.
Do you have a plan to change grace to not use defoma?

From my quick view of /usr/share/grace/fonts/FontDataBase, it can be
static file. Because most font packages already stopped providing defoma
file, dynamic font settings doesn't work as expected.

Thanks,

Bug#583987: install error: error processing python2.6 (--configure)

2010-05-31 Thread Diederik de Haas
Package: python2.6
Version: 2.6.5+20100529-1
Severity: grave
Tags: sid
Justification: renders package unusable

While trying to upgrade python2.6 to version 2.6.5+20100529-1 there is an error
during the execution of the post-install script:
TypeError: ('compile() expected string without null bytes',)dpkg: error
processing
python2.6 (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

In order to find out where it failed, I modified the postinst script as follows:
#! /bin/sh -e

files=$(dpkg -L python2.6 | sed -n '/^\/usr\/lib\/python2.6\/.*\.py$/p')
for file in $files
do
echo Processing '$file'
python2.6 /usr/lib/python2.6/py_compile.py $file
done

Running that script indicated it failed at the folling file:
Processing '/usr/lib/python2.6/io.py'
Sorry: TypeError: ('compile() expected string without null bytes',)

This error prevent the installation of this package (and therefor
libpython2.6),
so I've set the severity to grave.

  Diederik

Bug#583988: buildd: FTBFS if dh_quilt_patch/dh_quilt_unpatch in override_dh_auto_clean target

2010-05-31 Thread Gabriele Giacone
Package: buildd

I see that lwjgl FTBFS on all archs. Below buildd output from

I had added dh_quilt_patch/dh_quilt_unpatch to clean target because applied
patches were needed by ant clean.
I'll upload soon a different clean target that should works.

I don't know whether it's a buildd limitation or I'm wrong. This bug for the

Bug#583917: initramfs-tools: long delay (6–10 minutes) during boot (root device detection) after upgrade on RAID/LVM/LUKS setup

yesterday I upgrade my Debian Sid/unstable system after over a
week. Several core packages were upgraded by doing this as lvm2,
  mdadm, initscripts, initramfs-tools. I have a standard md RAID1
setup with LVM over it. Furthermore there is a partition for
  `/boot` and a LUKS encrypted `/`.

Now I am seeing the following behavior. After GRUB2 started
  (`linux /vmlinuz-2.6.32-5-amd64 root=/dev/mapper/lvm-root …`) I
first get to see a lot of lines

sys/devices/virtual/block (some incremented number in 80??)

(this is from memory). Afterward I am asked for the LUKS
passphrase. After that nothing happens. Just a lot of – according
to my Web research unrelated –udev-work messages about `NAME` and
`SYMLINK` stuff and nothing happens. Then after six to ten minutes
  booting finally continues.

 [...]

Is that related to the `root` argument passed in GRUB to `linux`.
In [1] the solution is to use a UUID instead of the path. Though I
did not find how I can find out the correct value for my RAID
  device or LVM partition.

Executing 'blkid /dev/mapper/lvm-root' should provide you the UUID
of the LVM partiton for use as root=UUID=... argument.

Thank you. While waiting during the now four hour long boot I found that
too over the comment about `vol_id` in `/etc/fstab`. ;-) Adding
`root=UUID=…` to `/boot/grub/grub.cfg` fixed the long boot for me. There
are still the following issues.

1. What upgrade introduced this behavior?

2. According to `/etc/default/grub` the `root=` entry should be set to
the UUID.

# Uncomment if you don't want GRUB to pass root=UUID=xxx parameter to
Linux
#GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true

Somehow that does not work on my system.

3. The comment in `/etc/fstab` should be updated to use `blkid` instead
of `vol_id`.

4. I still see those `sys/devices/virtual/block/md{0,1} (number)`
running by. Once before entering the LUKS passphrase dialog and after
it. Each time this seems to cause a delay of several seconds to the boot
process. I guess that is debpkg:mdadm related.

Thanks,

Paul

 Please instead depend on java-runtime-headless | java2-runtime-headless

A recent update to the Java Policy says that Java Libraries should not

Bug#583316: Running gs in a safe directory.

2010-05-31 Thread paul . szabo
Dear Bernhard,

Instead of trying to use -P- (which currently does not work
anyway) with all the complexity of guessing where to add it
if the commands are taken from some user config file, it just
changes to an empty directory befor calling gs.

Sounds good... except:

I do not see where /usr/lib/gv/safe-gs-workdir is created.

I would prefer to check it actually is empty... pure paranoia, is
root-owned so is unlikely to change. Name it please-keep-empty maybe?

Bug#583183: /usr/bin/gs: Insecure gs initialization

2010-05-31 Thread paul . szabo
Further gs issues. The gs scripts mentioned below are in /usr/bin:

bdftops dumphint dvipdf eps2eps font2c gsbj gsdj gsdj500 gslj gslp
  gsnd pdf2dsc pdf2ps pdfopt pf2afm pfbtopfa printafm ps2ascii ps2epsi
  ps2pdf ps2pdf12 ps2pdf13 ps2pdf14 ps2pdfwr ps2ps ps2ps2 wftopfa

(maybe others?).

The bad code is a non-issue (but illustrates quality of ghostscript);
the other issues are likely to be execute-any-code, maybe remotely.
Maybe the problems below should be split into separate bugs.

---

Missing -P- and -dSAFER in scripts

Bernhard R. Link brl...@debian.org noticed that there is no -P- flag
on gs invocations in any gs scripts, many are also missing a -dSAFER.

Reported to ghostscript:
  http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=691355

---

Relative filenames in scripts

Many gs scripts use auxiliary PS files. No absolute pathnames are
used, and thus are tried from current directory first, leading to
unsafe code execution.

Reported to ghostscript:
  http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=691356

---

Bad code in scripts

Many gs scripts in /usr/bin contain code like:

GS_EXECUTABLE=gs
gs=`dirname $0`/$GS_EXECUTABLE
if test ! -x $gs; then
gs=$GS_EXECUTABLE
fi
GS_EXECUTABLE=gs

Surely that last line is meant to be
GS_EXECUTABLE=$gs
as is on current gs distribution. But even then is badly written,
should probably be:

GS_EXECUTABLE=gs
gs=`dirname $0`/$GS_EXECUTABLE
if test -x $gs; then
GS_EXECUTABLE=$gs
fi

Bug#583624: libnss-myhostname: maybe use 127.0.1.1 to be consistent with Debian's default /etc/hosts

No special reason I guess,.. I wanted it just to be aligned with
Debian's standard.

I think the best would perhaps be to find out why Debian chose to use
127.0.1.1 and decide then

If you have a collab accout or a git server somewhere, you can try to
update http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-vala/vtg.git;a=summary

I have not looked at it for so long now, the issue last year was with
incompatible releases of gtksourceview. That is probably fixed by now.

Feel free to take ownership of the bug as well

Bug#469626: gstopenmax: changing back from ITP to RFP

The package exists in maemo/meego.

I am not sure about usefulness in Debian. Perhaps we should close that
bug if nobody is interested in Debian..

See http://meego.gitorious.org/maemo-multimedia/gst-openmax

 Hi,

This is an automatic email to change the status of gstopenmax back from ITP
(Intent to Package) to RFP (Request for Package), because this bug hasn't seen
any activity during the last 18 months.

If you are still interested in adopting gstopenmax, please send a mail to
 cont...@bugs.debian.org with:

retitle 469626 ITP: gstopenmax -- a GStreamer plug-in for OpenMAX IL
  owner 469626 !
  thanks

However, it is not recommended to keep ITP for a long time without acting on
the package, as it might cause other prospective maintainers to refrain from
packaging that software. It is also a good idea to document your progress on
this ITP from time to time, by mailing 469...@bugs.debian.org.

Thank you for your interest in Debian,

Bug#583991: Heads up for ISC DHCP v4 transition

2010-05-31 Thread Andrew Pollock
Hello,

According to my research, you maintain a package, which installs a DHCP hook
into /etc/dhcp3

The v4 DHCP packages use /etc/dhcp instead, so at the point that I upload
them to unstable, you'll need to modify your package to install its hooks
into /etc/dhcp instead.

I think I'm fairly close to uploading to unstable. It's currently available
in experimental to have a play with. I believe it will have to go through
NEW processing when I upload it to unstable, so I'll update this bug again
when it hits NEW.

regards

Andrew

Bug#583992: [Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Processed: cloning 547653, reassign -1 to resolvconf, reassign -2 to avahi-autoipd ...

2010-05-31 Thread Michael Biebl
Hi Andrew,

could you specify what your exact plan is here and how you want packages to be
changed wrt their hooks they install, do you want them to be symlinked, moved or
copied?

Why don't you just make isc-dhcp-client (and dhcp3-client) read hooks from both
/etc/dhcp *and* /etc/dhcp3.
This way packages could move to the new location and when the transition is over
you could drop the compat code from isc-dhcp-client.

Cheers,
Michael

Removing this option makes everything work perfectly.

Looking at some bugs in this orphaned package.

Not sure if is a typo, but is /var/run/utmp what is used, not /var/log/utmp.
Anyway, seems that in systems with /var/run/utmp there is still no log. See
 followup to your bug report,

 http://bugs.debian.org/463598

I tried removing the '-u /var/run/utmp' part from Xstartup, but seems to
still not register sessions. Are wdm sesions registered at your site with
 the change?

I compared code in wdm and xdm Xstartups and they looked very similar, so I
guess this problem originates somewhere else.

In the box where wdm is installed last time /var/log/wdm.log was updated was
long time ago, on November 2005 for sid. I wonder what happened at that
time. I think about something related to xfree86 - xorg transition (last
xfree86 log in this sid box is from September 2005).

 Thanks for your feedback,

I've switched to using xdm now (it's working fine at my site.)

Bug#583990: liferea: reproducibly dumps core after 20 minutes to a few hours of running

For about two weeks now my liferea on Debian Lenny crashes everytime I
start it after latest one day (i.e. when I come back from work, it's
 always gone).

I'm pretty sure this is fixed in 1.6.x. Also the 1.4 series is no longer
maintained upstream. But if we find an easy fix I wouldn't oppose to fix in a
stable update, so...

Currently installing xulrunner-1.9-dbg, but the download from security.d.o
is slow as hell atm, so I send this bug report as it is now. If a backtrace
is wanted with xulrunner-1.9-dbg installed, I can provide that later.

One with libxml2-dbg installed would be much more useful.

Cheers,
Emilio

Bug#583999: twidge: Fails to display new style retweets

2010-05-31 Thread Aaron Howell
Package: twidge
Version: 0.99.4+nmu1
Severity: important
Tags: upstream

When comparing what i see using twidge to what i see using the twitter.com
website,
I noticed a bunch of missing tweets in the twidge version.
It turns out twidge doesn't handle the new style of retweet introduced several
months back,
These tweets are simply ignored, so unless you check the website, you would
never know they were there in your feed.
Having to check the website to make sure you aren't missing out on things your
friends think are important/worthwhile knowing about makes using Twidge a
little pointless, hence the reason for marking the bug important.
