Bug#586533: chef: General update after the debconf review process
Dear Debian maintainer, On Friday, June 04, 2010, I sent you a notification about the beginning of a review action on debconf templates for chef. Then, I sent you a bug report with rewritten templates and announcing the beginning of the second phase of this action: call for translation updates. Translators have been working hard and here is now the result of their efforts. Please consider using it EVEN if you committed files to your development tree as long as they were reported. The attached tarball contains: - debian/changelog with the list of changes - debian/control with rewrites of packages' descriptions - debian/templates with all the rewritten templates file(s) - debian/po/*.po with all PO files (existing ones and new ones) As said, please use *at least* the PO files as provided here, preferrably over those sent by translators in their bug reports. All of them have been checked and reformatted. In some cases, formatting errors have been corrected. The patch.rfr file contains a patch for the templates and control file(s) alone. Please note that this patch applies to the templates and control file(s) of your package as of Friday, June 04, 2010. If your package was updated in the meantime, I may have updated my reference copybut I also may have missed that. This is indeed why I suggested you do not modified such files while the review process was running, remember..:-) It is now safe to upload a new package version with these changes. Please notify me of your intents with regards to this. Bug#588889: wrong instructions in syslinux.README.Debian
Package: syslinux Version: 2:4.01+dfsg-2 Severity: minor [This bug is filed against -2, although the change has been introduced in -3.] Hi, wrong instructions about how to create floppy disk images have been added to syslinux.README.Debian in the -3 revision of the syslinux package. First, if the code is supposed to be shell code, then there must not be two dollar signs to variable calls. The first step in paragraph 2 results in the following error messages: $ for SIZE in 720 1200 1440 1743; do dd if=/dev/zero of=img$${SIZE}k bs=1k count=$$SIZE; done dd: invalid number `26518SIZE' dd: invalid number `26518SIZE' dd: invalid number `26518SIZE' dd: invalid number `26518SIZE' with 26518 being the PID of my current shell. Reducing to one dollar sign fixes this issue. The formatting in the second step also does not work. If the second dollar sign is removed from the DRIVE variable, mformat spits out the following error messages: $ for DRIVE in a: b: c: d:; do MTOOLSRC=/usr/share/syslinux/examples/mtoolsrc mformat $DRIVE; done mformat: Can't open /dev/fd0: No such device or address mformat: Can't open /dev/fd1: No such file or directory mformat: Drive 'C:' not supported mformat: Drive 'D:' not supported This happens because mformat has no idea what is meant with a:, b:, c: and d: and the config file that is supposed to tell it is missing! Needless to tell that as a consequence of this the third step is also failing. - Fabian -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (501, 'unstable'), (101, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=de_DE.utf8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages syslinux depends on: ii libc6 2.11.2-2 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii syslinux-common2:4.01+dfsg-2 collection of boot loaders (common syslinux recommends no packages. Bug#525141: Virtual package
I'm just a normal Debian user, not a developer, but couldn't this be solved by creating a new virtual package, perhaps called init, which would then be marked as essential, and make sysvinit or upstart a provider of the init package, as well as any other init implementations which are compatible with sysvinit style scripts. This way, you could still ensure that you have an init implementation to be able to boot, but not have this current problem of sysvinit clobbering upstart. I'd also think that this could help with the migration to upstart, which has already been suggested last year. While I do realize that the logic behind how they operate is different, upstart does provide a sysvinit script compatibility, so experimenting around with a virtual package for providing init may be a good transition step. Later, for script migration, you could then have another package, probably called upstart-initscripts, which could gradually be built to optimize for upstart use, and eventually replace initscripts as a requirement for upstart. Any reason as to why this sort of a solution wouldn't work?
Bug#588891: Policy 8.6 (shlibs files) needs a serious rewrite to cover symbols
Package: debian-policy Version: 3.8.4.0 Severity: normal Hi, Debian Policy 8.6 'Dependencies between the library and other packages - the shlibs system' seems seriously out of date as it makes no mentioning of symbols files at all. Other than the lack of documentation of the superior system I find the following sentence problematic: | Thus, when a package is built which contains any shared libraries, | it must provide a shlibs file for other packages to use, ... A package that provides a symbols file but no shlibs file is fully functional but would violate a MUST directive. Providing a shlibs file as well as symbols just duplicates information needlessly (and then maintainer will forget to change one when they change the other) and not every library can be entered in shlibs as it requires a specific SOVERSION pattern. Symbols files on the other hand match the full SONAME and have no such restriction. Point being symbols file are a superset of shlibs feature wise and policy should mention them and allow their use instead (or in combination with if wanted) shlibs file. Bug#588144: libc6: As shipped /etc/bindresvport.blacklist lines are ignored due to tabs
From lenny's glibc-2.7/debian/patches/any/local-bindresvport_blacklist.diff the code to read and parse a single line is: + unsigned long port; + char *tmp, *cp; + ssize_t n = __getline (buf, buflen, fp); + if (n 1) +break; + + cp = buf; + tmp = strchr (cp, '#'); /* remove comments */ + if (tmp) +*tmp = '\0'; + while (isspace ((int)*cp))/* remove spaces and tabs */ +++cp; + if (*cp == '\0')/* ignore empty lines */ +continue; + if (cp[strlen (cp) - 1] == '\n') +cp[strlen (cp) - 1] = '\0'; + + port = strtoul (cp, tmp, 0); + if (*tmp != '\0' || (port == ULONG_MAX errno == ERANGE)) + continue; This has a couple of issues. The one that causes a problem is that it skips leading but not trailing spaces. If the last digit of the number is followed by anything other than '\0', '#', or '\n', the line will be skipped. Code should be added after strtoul() to skip the spaces: while (isspace ((int)*tmp))/* remove spaces and tabs */ ++tmp; Also, a comment purports to ignore empty lines by checking for a null character, but it does this *before* replacing a newline at the end with a null character. As it happens, lines consisting solely of a newline will be ignored, but only because of this code: + /* Don't bother with out-of-range ports */ + if (port LOWPORT || port ENDPORT) +continue; Therefore, the ignore empty lines comment is misleading. In an Ubuntu bug report, I gave good directions for testing this. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glibc/+bug/306007 I have confirmed the directions work on lenny (I have an Ubuntu desktop and a lenny server). (Of course, I got different port numbers, but still in the 600-999 range I reserved.) 0. Backup the file: $ sudo mv /etc/bindresvport.blacklist /etc/bindresvport.blacklist.bak 1. Reserve all ports 600-999, with the format used for shipped bindresvport.blacklist (e.g., 631\t# cups) $ perl -e 'for ($i=600; $i1000; $i++) {print $i\t# foo\n;}' | sudo dd of=/etc/bindresvport.blacklist 7+1 records in 7+1 records out 4011 bytes (4.0 kB) copied, 6.5962e-05 s, 60.8 MB/s 2. Restart nis (or a different service as available). $ sudo /etc/init.d/nis restart * Starting NIS service 3. Check what port it got: $ sudo netstat --inet -nap | grep ypbind tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:724 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 29803/ypbind udp 0 0 0.0.0.0:723 0.0.0.0:* 29803/ypbind udp 0 0 0.0.0.0:724 0.0.0.0:* 29803/ypbind 4. Note that it falls in the range 600-999 (there is a small 24 out of 424 chance it will not -- try again). This also fails with spaces, substituting the perl command in step 1: $ perl -e 'for ($i=600; $i1000; $i++) {print $i # foo\n;}' | sudo dd of=/etc/bindresvport.blacklist It works with the '#' character directly following the port number: $ perl -e 'for ($i=600; $i1000; $i++) {print $i# foo\n;}' | sudo dd of=/etc/bindresvport.blacklist or with the port number on the line by itself: $ perl -e 'for ($i=600; $i1000; $i++) {print $i\n;}' | sudo dd of=/etc/bindresvport.blacklist In the last two cases I get: tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:1001 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 29923/ypbind udp 0 0 0.0.0.0:1000 0.0.0.0:* 29923/ypbind udp 0 0 0.0.0.0:1001 0.0.0.0:* 29923/ypbind -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#588744: [xserver-xorg-video-intel] No brightness/contrast controls
Can you explain exactly what your report is about? What controls are you talking about, I'll try to be more detailed: I'm just talking about implementing a way to change brightness/contrast through HDMI when using an Intel chipset because I'm unable to find one in my HTPC: 1) I first tried to use XFCE4 (default and only desktop) display controls but they seem have no way to do it. 2) Then I tried to use MythTV picture controls but they had no effect. 3) Last, I did man intel and found there is a BACKLIGHT attribute for LVDS output but not for HDMI-* so, unless I'm missing something (which is truly possible), I guess there is no way of changing brightness/contrast in a HDMI output with the intel module and that's why I'm sending this wishlist report. and why did you report it on the Debian bug tracker if you're not using Debian in the first place? I do use Debian squeeze in my workplace desktop machine (from where I'm sending this report) which also has an Intel graphics chipset but not a HDMI output, just VGA, so I'm unable to reproduce this issue. But the HTPC is running Mythbuntu without network connection and as I thought Ubuntu xorg-intel was just a repackaged Debian deb, that's why I'm reporting this directly to Debian. If I'm messing things up too much then just mark this invalid and I'll send the report to the Mythbuntu team instead. Cheers, Antonio
Bug#588892: Doesn't follow filesystem recommendations
Package: mhddfs Version: 0.1.35 Severity: minor Tags: patch When filling a filesystem mhddfs will normally fill one of the component filesystems to a fixed amount less than the total capacity of the filesystem before it moves onto the next. If the filesystems have different capacities the percentage of free space remaining cannot be forced into the range suggested at the maximum by the filesystem writers. Eg. If you arrange for the free space on one drive to be 25% of the capacity a drive of half the capacity will end up at 50% and a drive of double will end up at 12%. The default value mean that a modern hard disk will be filled up to 100% before moving onto the next drive. The attached patch uses a free percentage calculation so that the drives will be filled one by one as now, but to a free percentage before moving onto the next drive. Once all the drives have been filled to this percentage the drive space will be allocated to the drive with the minimum allocated (integer) percentage. The use of an integer means that related files are likely to be clustered on the same drive as subsequent files will be placed on the same drive until the percentage value ticks over to the next integer value. This has several advantages; the simplest being that a default setup of (say) 25% is good for all drives. Others are all the reasons for keeping a filesystem under 85% usage in the first place. I have chosen 25% free as the default because it gives a good headroom to go buy an extra drive before you hit the 85% I mentioned before. Bug#588901: High-level noise and sound deformation with libao4 on debian-ppc
Package: libao4 Version: 1.0.0-4 Severity: important Hello, After upgrading mpg321 from version 0.2.10.6 which uses libao2 to version 0.2.12-1 which uses libao4, I started having the following problems when playing a mp3 file: - high-level noise in the background - sound deformation especially on voices. I first filled a bug report for mpg321 (bug number 588531) where I have attached a mp3 file which corresponds to the output sound of my system (having mpg321 write a wav file then I converted it to mp3) (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=5;filename=Sample_output_mpg321.mp3;att=1;bug=588531) If you listen to the mp3 file, you will be able to hear the problems. However, after a discussion with the mpg321 maintainer and a few tests (he sent me a short code using libao to play a wav file), we identified that the problem came from libao4. Wav files play just fine when the code is compiled against libao2 but the problems I have described appear when it is compiled against libao4. This problem only occurs on the debian-ppc version (it works fine on my amd64 debian desktop). If that seems relevant, could you merge the previously filled bug report for mpg321 (588531) with this new one? Please tell me if you would need more information. Best regards. Bug#588892: Doesn't follow filesystem recommendations
severity 588892 minor tags 588892 patch thanks Hi, Robert! I've edited Your patch a bit and uploaded new version upto Debian/experimental. Please test it :) Thanks for Your work! On 09:40 Tue 13 Jul , Robert de Bath wrote: RdB Package: mhddfs RdB Version: 0.1.35 RdB Severity: minor RdB Tags: patch RdB When filling a filesystem mhddfs will normally fill one of the component filesystems to a fixed amount less than the total capacity of the filesystem before it moves onto the next. RdB The attached patch uses a free percentage calculation so that the drives will be filled one by one as now, but to a free percentage before moving onto the next drive. RdB This has several advantages; the simplest being that a default setup of (say) 25% is good for all drives. Others are all the reasons for keeping a filesystem under 85% usage in the first place. RdB I have chosen 25% free as the default because it gives a good headroom to go buy an extra drive before you hit the 85% I mentioned before. Bug#588535: nautilus locks when opening a directory with thumbnails, symlinks and directories
Le vendredi 09 juillet 2010 à 14:40 +0200, Armin Fuerst a écrit : I have a folder with symlinks and images - thumbnails enabled. When creating a new directory using nautilus, it doesn't seem to do anything. I close the window, reopen it and the untitled folder is visible, but nautilus doesn't respond any more. Bug#588910: gnome-do-plugins: skype plugin should be less verbose
Package: gnome-do-plugins Version: 0.8.2.1+dfsg-2 Severity: normal On startup the skype plugin emits several pages of information to the console, including the aliases and full names every single skype contact and conversation it finds. This should not be, because it makes the search for actual errors very difficult. Unless in debug mode, the plugin should only write warnings to the console, not all this information. Bug#588912: inkscape: CSS class selector matches a suffix, not only a whole word
Package: inkscape Version: 0.47.0-2+b1 Severity: minor If the SVG file includes a CSS rule for the selector rect.world, then it should match rect elements whose class attribute contains the word world. In Inkscape however, it matches rect elements whose class attribute contains any word ending with world. I'm attaching a file that demonstrates the bug. class=helloworld (large circle): Bug; matches but shouldn't class=hello (vertical ellipse): OK, doesn't match class=world (horizontal ellipse): OK, matches class=hello world (small circle): OK, matches This bug seems to be in src/libcroco/cr-sel-eng.c (class_add_sel_matches_node): after strncmp has returned a nonzero value, which means the word did not match, the loop increments cur by only one character instead of skipping the whole word. In bug #427946, it is said that the src/libcroco/ included in inkscape was forked from libcroco 0.6. I suspect there's _something_ unusual about my system that causes this problem, but better reporting of what it is would be nice. Well, there (pointed via [1]) it is. :) But sadly you didn't provide details about your configuration as suggested by reportbug. So please provide at least content of /etc/kernel-img.conf and /etc/initramfs-tools/update-initramfs.conf regards, -mika- signature.asc Description: Digital signature
