As for the current bug, I'd like to point out that noip2 configuration and runtime state has always been kept in a binary configuration file. However, this still is a serious bug. Currently, someone who makes local changes to the content of the configuration file /var/lib/noip2/noip2.conf by running the noip2 client will lose her changes at an upgrade. Currently, no-ip offers debconf support for managing username, password, updating, matchlist, netdevice and forcenatoff. I assume this is generally really sufficient to use no-ip. An extra plain text conffile needs to be introduced, and the advice in debconf-devel(7)'s ADVANCED PROGRAMMING WITH DEBCONF - Config file handling needs to be followed. Well not from me but there is still no answer from the maintainer about the 'languages' issue. I was just too lazy to open another RC bug for it but in practise the current package leaves unowned files around after removal in case you upgraded from a prior version. Commenting out that part would be a solution but I haven't tested if sarg will work without the language files. Your suggested solution makes sense, and I agree with your assessment that it won't be trivial to implement. Note that noip2 already contains significant debian-specific patches, in order to support configuration via debconf, and supporting plain a text conffile will only add to this unhealthy situation. In any case, I don't have the time to tackle this, and no real motivation, since, as I mentioned, I'm quite happy using a different update client (namely, ddclient [2]). Hmm, there is only one mktexlsr/texhash call in /usr/bin/updmap. Hence we could simply run updmap-sys --nohash and an additional mktexlsr after it. Bug#607921: retitle 607921: freevo messes with /home
retitle 607921: freevo messes with /home clone 607921 -1 severity -1 important retitle -1 freevo: doesnt cleanup on purge thanks Hi, On Freitag, 24. Dezember 2010, A Mennucc wrote: tag 607921 +wontfix sigh. But tagging it wontfix will not prevent the release manager to remove your package from squeeze. Your call... You seem to have misunderstood that this bug is mostly about not purging on purge. Thats just a side effect / another problem. The real problem is that your package is directly messing with /home/freevo - thats the NO GO. To help you, I've now made two bugs out of this one ;-) here is the situation. When you install the package 'freevo' it sets up your PC to be a PVR. Thanks, I know freevo, I have used it in the past. Then users (*) can indeed record TV shows in the directory /home/freevo/recordings . Users can do what they want with their system. Debian packages OTOH are supposed to follow Debian policy and therefore FHS. And the FHS says: dont touch /home. Simple as that. So I do not find it reasonable to delete these directories when the 'freevo' package is purged. [...] If 'freevo' would delete these directories when I purge it, then I would be very unhappy by now. Why would you purge freevo, if you dont want all its files to go away? Seriously. IMO purge should always do what purge is supposed to do. Keeping configuration / data on purge is stupid, because a.) thats what remove does b.) thats not what purge should do. I hate it when a computer doesnt do as I say... b.) if one cannot rely on purge to really purge, because too many packages want to be exceptions, purge becomes useless. c.) you do have backups, anyway, don't you? If another user is using freevo as I do, and he would for any reason decide to purge 'freevo' and it would delete these directories then the user would come to my place with a very large and spiky clue-bat. to which you could say you asked the package to be purged, not removed, and the packaging system did that. PEBKAC. Do you agree with the above? No. (And I'm rather sick of explaining people that Debian policy also applies to their packages, esp. if I give good URLs to read.) As per the choice of directories... does it make any major difference whether they are under /home or under /var or anywhere alse ? Sigh. Yes it does. BTW, what 'freevo' is doing is similar to what mysql does: by default, mysql-server-5.0 will not delete the databases on package purge (unless the user uses debconf to set the key postrm_remove_databases to true) I'd be happier if freevo would also support this. IMO this would still be a bug, but probably not an important one ;) But please keep in mind, that using /home per default is the serious problem you need to fix. And please read the URLs I gave you in the initial bug report. cheers, Holger signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

This can be seen with: 4. Type [Enter]. - The time in the current prompt is updated to the time when the window has been resized. This shows that the time in the prompt was updated internally, but the effect couldn't be seen on the terminal. A new prompt is also output as expected. Note for the users of real-time resize: it may happen that two SIGWINCH are sent during the same second, so that you won't see the problem in such a case. The problem can be seen with fvwm by using the ResizeOutline style. It can also be visible with the ResizeOpaque style (real-time resize), but in such a case, you should change the width of the terminal only by one column (or the last (one-)column change should occur more than one second after the other column changes). -- Vincent Lefèvre vinc...@vinc17.net - Web: http://www.vinc17.net/ 100% accessible validated (X)HTML - Blog: http://www.vinc17.net/blog/ Work: CR INRIA - computer arithmetic / Arénaire project (LIP, ENS-Lyon) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#569013: Emacs for debian-reference (moreinfo)
Hi, This is reminder that this bug report is marked as moreinfo. Have you found any sensible way to include Emacs intro info into debian-reference without causing information overload. Please note I have the following text which gives fair exposure to Emacs: | http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch01.en.html#_the_text_editor | | 1.4.6. The text editor | | You should become proficient in one of variants of Vim or Emacs programs | which are popular in the Unix-like system. | ... | If you chose either Emacs or XEmacs instead as your choice of the | editor, that is another good choice indeed, particularly for | programming. Some people maintain that the only program they need on | Linux is Emacs. Ten minutes learning Emacs now can save hours later. | Having the GNU Emacs manual for reference when learning Emacs is highly | recommended. Please note I have extensive section 1.3 for mc. So suggesting but not recommending mc is valid thing. Please also see: 1.4.8. Customizing vim 1.6.4. Global substitution with regular expression In these examples, vim is used. So suggesting but not recommending vim is valid thing. I think if you have equivalents of 1.4.8 and 1.6.4 using Emacs in very concise way, I can include such text for next release. (One negative of adding Emacs to dependency line is that Emacs changes package name with version transition. But it may not be so bad these days.) Bug#584836: Bug in libgnupg-interface-perl fixed in revision 59010
Hi, I have been intensively using libgnupg-interface-perl from experimental (0.42.002-1) since it has been uploaded and I did not experience any regression vs. 0.42. Considering it only fixes half a dozen bugs with normal priority it is of course too late in the freeze process to push this to Squeeze. OTOH I sincerely believe this package would deserve being made available to sid users. Thanks for your feedback! The reason I did not yet reuploaded to unstable was that now we are in deep freeze, wanted to have the in sid and unstable for the case some problems arise the same version in unstable and squeeze. On the other hand, libgnupg-interface-perl had never really big problems and seems fine in the version in squeeze. We can rethink the reasoning, and maybe reupload to unstable to make the changes available in sid. Bests and thanks Salvatore signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Hi Eric, Great, thank for the testing! Replacing the closing -- quiet with edd=off as you instructed, the installer still worked. In this case however, there was no wait at all for the language menu to show up. So the pause is definitely EDD-related, and it doesn't happen when you boot the squeeze kernel from your hard disk, right? If so, then this looks much like a BIOS oddity. To everybody: I wonder why edd=off isn't the default in the installer, does d-i load the edd module and use the info it provides? The simple idea would be to call updmap-sys --nohash, but on initial installations that might lead to problems as the psfonts.map etc file generated by updmap might not be present *before* the run. Hmm, there is only one mktexlsr/texhash call in /usr/bin/updmap. Hence we could simply run updmap-sys --nohash and an additional mktexlsr after it. I didn't check yet if the ls-R update is needed during the run. However I didn't check if an updated ls-R database is needed during the updmap-sys run. In this case we can only patch updmap to update only our dist texmf trees...and file an wishlist bug to upstream that the texmf trees to be updated during updmap can be specified. Of course this is non-sense. The normal system admin would expect that updmap-sys refreshes the ls-R db as needed which would not be the case after the change. Bug#607857: texlive-base: don't put files under /usr/local (proposed patch)
On 25.12.10 Norbert Preining (prein...@logic.at) wrote: Hi, By default, the TeX filename database is also rebuilt (with mktexlsr). ... --nohash do not run texhash ... So ... what is the solution? The simple idea would be to call updmap-sys --nohash, but on initial installations that might lead to problems as the psfonts.map etc file generated by updmap might not be present *before* the run. I hade a short look: texhash is only called one time shortly before the end of the mkMaps function, which is only called one time at the end of the main function. This means the updmap script itself does not need an ls-R db update during the run, it just has to mek sure the new map files are known to the system after they were created. Hence we can replace the updmap-sys call by updmap-sys --nohash mktexlsr /usr/share/texmf /var/lib/texmf /usr/share/texmf-texlive Perhaps make an own bash function for it. Bug#603572: Re: Bug Report #603572 / more feedback
Package: revelation Version: 0.4.11-8 Severity: normal I am not a programmer, and I have no programming knowledge, but this may be helpful to someone... The old ubuntu package has worked fine, but the newer Debian package has not, and the constant notification of an update had become a constant annoyance. Therefore, I decided to see if I could find some difference between the two packages that would cause this problem. The result came down to one file. The problem appears to be in the /usr/share/revelation/libexec/revelation-applet file as I now have the newer Debian package working as it should be. I simply copied the revelation-applet file from the ubuntu package over the one from the newer Debian package and all is working fine. Hope someone finds this useful... Package: rxvt-unicode Version: 9.09-3 Severity: normal Hi! I hope to not bring any further rage to this bug report but I have noticed that using TERM rxvt-256color does not allow me to draw semi-graphical characters. I am using zsh and using echotc, I can draw an horizontal line using: echo $(echotc as)q$(echotc ae) (q was from echotc ac output) This works when TERM is set to rxvt-unicode or rxvt-unicode-256color (I have them installed in my ~/.terminfo) but does not work when using rxvt-256color. I suppose this is because rxvt-256color does not get installed. Q: Can you please port the diet libc to FreeBSD/Solaris/Windows? A: No. Q: Can I compile or use the diet libc with a compiler that is not gcc? A: Compile: no. Use: yes. So worrying about what *BSD/Solaris do would be pointless. All this patch does is remove some underscores so that endian.h checks __sparcv9 like is done in longlong.h. I only tested with gcc, but this should work with the sun compiler too, if it's even possible to use the sun compiler on linux. Unlike reverting patch 0013, this should work even when compiling without -Os. I was initially hesitant to give this bug a very high severity, since it very indirectly breaks the system, but I suppose I need to do that so #603882 can be fixed.
