 Not really.

If so, it should indeed get orphaned. Googling revealed:

You should set the package maintainer to Debian QA Group
packa...@qa.debian.org and submit a bug report against the
pseudo package wnpp. The bug report should be titled O: package

The severity of the bug should be set to normal. [...] send a
copy to debian-de...@lists.debian.org by putting the address
in the X-Debbugs-CC: header of the message [...]

I'm still using no-ip.com services, but I've recently switched to using
 ddclient as the update client.

The only place noip2 store configuration data (apart from the debconf

overwritten on each upgrade using *only* values supplied by debconf.

And the bug should be fixed too, of course...

As for the current bug, I'd like to point out that noip2 configuration
and runtime state has always been kept in a binary configuration file.
This doesn't match the Debian policy, and the current abuse of debconf
is the result of a our deliberate attempt to workaround it.

As documented in Bug #430842, I just found out. However, this still is a
serious bug. Currently, someone who makes local changes to the content of the
configuration file /var/lib/noip2/noip2.conf by running the noip2 client will
lose her changes at an upgrade.

Currently, no-ip offers debconf support for managing username, password,
updating, matchlist, netdevice and forcenatoff. I assume this is generally
really sufficient to use no-ip.

An extra plain text conffile needs to be introduced, and the
advice in debconf-devel(7)'s ADVANCED PROGRAMMING WITH DEBCONF - Config file
handling needs to be followed. Users should be advised not to change
/var/lib/noip2/noip2.conf directly. I believe this way one fully adheres to
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-files.html#s10.7.2 . It won't be
trivial...

Joost

Bug#606778: patch proposal

Hmpf. Indeed.

One simple answer is to just ignore the error:

   mv /var/www/squid-reports/* /var/lib/sarg || true

 Any objections to this fix?

Well not from me but there is still no answer from the maintainer
about the 'languages' issue. I was just too lazy to open another RC bug
for it but in practise the current package leaves unowned files around
after removal in case you upgraded from a prior version.

Commenting out that part would be a solution but I haven't tested if sarg
will work without the language files.

As documented in Bug #430842, I just found out.

There's more background in bug #485725 [1]. This issue keeps coming up,
our best intentions not withstanding.

 However, this still is a
serious bug. Currently, someone who makes local changes to the content of the

Well, user changes will not be lost if the user performs them via
dpkg-reconfigure. I'm not sure, however, if this is specifically
documented anywhere.

An extra plain text conffile needs to be introduced, and the
advice in debconf-devel(7)'s ADVANCED PROGRAMMING WITH DEBCONF - Config file

I was under the impression that the current situation conforms with the
debian policy, but I may be wrong.

Your suggested solution makes sense, and I agree with your assessment
that it won't be trivial to implement.

Note that noip2 already contains significant debian-specific patches, in
order to support configuration via debconf, and supporting plain a text
conffile will only add to this unhealthy situation.

In any case, I don't have the time to tackle this, and no real
motivation, since, as I mentioned, I'm quite happy using a different
update client (namely, ddclient [2]).

Thanks,
Avi

Bug#607964: ITP: ucto -- Unicode Tokenizer

2010-12-25 Thread Joost van Baal
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Joost van Baal joostvb-debian-bugs-2010122...@mdcc.cx

* Package name: ucto
Upstream Author : ILK Research Group, Tilburg University, http://ilk.uvt.nl
* URL : http://ilk.uvt.nl/mbt/
* License : GPL-3
  Programming Lang: C++
  Description : Unicode Tokenizer

Ucto can tokenize UTF-8 encoded text files (i.e. separate words from
punctuation, split sentences, generate n-grams), and offers several other
basic preprocessing steps (change case, count words/characters and reverse
lines) that make your text suited for further processing such as indexing,
 part-of-speech tagging, or machine translation.
 .
Ucto is a product of the ILK Research Group, Tilburg University (The
 Netherlands).
 .
If you are interested in machine parsing of UTF-8 encoded text files, e.g. to
do scientific research in natural language processing, ucto will likely be of
 use to you.

Upstream has not yet officially released ucto; currently there's just an
obsolete prerelease snapshot and some promissing code in SVN (not git). See
also https://github.com/proycon , http://proylt.anaproy.nl/en/software/ and
http://proylt.anaproy.nl/media/software/ .

The frog package (See Bug#605905: ITP: frog -- tagger and parser for Dutch
language) will depend upon ucto. Frog will be the new name and reincarnation
of tadpole, see http://ilk.uvt.nl/tadpole/ .

Following update of machine and reboot the XFCE4-panel shows up as a normal

Bug#607970: release-notes: maybe discourage a bit from deactivating the auto-install of recommends

2010-12-25 Thread Philipp Kern
Package: release-notes

Hi there,

the wording of squeeze now installs recommends by default is pretty neutral:

| For squeeze APT automatically installs recommended packages by default[2].
This

| APT::Install-Recommends false;

Maybe the paragraph should also state that doing so is supported, but that the
description of recommends is that those packages should be installed together

It isn't useful anymore. It doesn't have an active development, but
has a long reverse dependency including Mono and PHP5. I've contacted
some of them back somewhen and the consensus was to leave it for Squeeze
and remove after it is released.

Well, I expected somthing like that.

So ... what is the solution? The simple idea would be
to call updmap-sys --nohash, but on initial installations that
might lead to problems as the psfonts.map etc file generated by
updmap might not be present *before* the run.

Hmm, there is only one mktexlsr/texhash call in /usr/bin/updmap.
Hence we could simply run updmap-sys --nohash and an additional
mktexlsr after it.
However I didn't check if an updated ls-R database is needed during
the updmap-sys run. In this case we can only patch updmap to update
only our dist texmf trees...and file an wishlist bug to upstream that
the texmf trees to be updated during updmap can be specified.

Thanks for reporting the bug.

Do you (or anyone else) know how can I test if patch fixes the issue
without having to go through an FTP master? Something like launching
test builds?
If that doesn't exist, I'll just try patches in the next -2 version of
the package.

Bug#606993: [Python-apps-team] Bug#606993: subdownloader: always fail to download selected subs

2010-12-25 Thread Sandro Tosi
Hi all,

On Mon, Dec 13, 2010 at 20:17, florian fgr...@hotmail.com wrote:
 Package: subdownloader

 Justification: renders package unusable

    return codecs.utf_8_decode(input, errors, True)
UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode character u'\xe9' in position
 13: ordinal not in range(128)

the problem is easily replicable with:

$ python -c import os.path ; print os.path.join('/tmp/',
u'\xe9').decode('utf8')
Traceback (most recent call last):
File string, line 1, in module
File /usr/lib/python2.6/encodings/utf_8.py, line 16, in decode
return codecs.utf_8_decode(input, errors, True)
UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode character u'\xe9' in
position 5: ordinal not in range(128)

That's because one of the 2 parameters is already encoded (the '/tmp/'
one, which is a string) while the other is unicode. The solution here
is either make both params a string, and then decode after the join()
or just remove the .decode('utf8'):

$ python -c import os.path ; print os.path.join('/tmp/', u'\xe9')
/tmp/é

since join() returns a unicode object in that case.

What do the subdownloader developers think about it?

Even if the bug is annoying, I don't think it deserves an RC severity
in Debian: anynow against downgrading it to important?

Cheers,

retitle 607921: freevo messes with /home

retitle -1 freevo: doesnt cleanup on purge
thanks

Hi,

On Freitag, 24. Dezember 2010, A Mennucc wrote:
 tag 607921 +wontfix

sigh.

But tagging it wontfix will not prevent the release manager to remove your
package from squeeze. Your call...

You seem to have misunderstood that this bug is mostly about not purging on
purge. Thats just a side effect / another problem. The real problem is that
your package is directly messing with /home/freevo - thats the NO GO.

To help you, I've now made two bugs out of this one ;-)

here is the situation. When you install the package 'freevo' it sets up
your PC to be a PVR.

Thanks, I know freevo, I have used it in the past.

 Then users (*) can
indeed record TV shows in the directory /home/freevo/recordings .

Users can do what they want with their system. Debian packages OTOH are
supposed to follow Debian policy and therefore FHS. And the FHS says: dont
touch /home.

Simple as that.

 So I
do not find it reasonable to delete these directories when the 'freevo'
 package is purged.
[...]
 If 'freevo' would delete these
directories when I purge it, then I would be very unhappy by now.

Why would you purge freevo, if you dont want all its files to go away?
Seriously.

IMO purge should always do what purge is supposed to do.

Keeping configuration / data on purge is stupid, because
 a.) thats what remove does
b.) thats not what purge should do. I hate it when a computer doesnt do as
I say...
b.) if one cannot rely on purge to really purge, because too many packages
want to be exceptions, purge becomes useless.
c.) you do have backups, anyway, don't you?

If another user is using freevo as I do, and he would for any reason
decide to purge 'freevo' and it would delete these directories then the
user would come to my place with a very large and spiky clue-bat.

to which you could say you asked the package to be purged, not removed, and
the packaging system did that. PEBKAC.

Do you agree with the above?

No. (And I'm rather sick of explaining people that Debian policy also applies
to their packages, esp. if I give good URLs to read.)

As per the choice of directories... does it make any major difference
whether they are under /home or under /var or anywhere alse ?

Sigh.

Yes it does.

BTW, what 'freevo' is doing is similar to what mysql does: by default,
mysql-server-5.0 will not delete the databases on package purge (unless
the user uses debconf to set the key postrm_remove_databases to true)

I'd be happier if freevo would also support this. IMO this would still be a
bug, but probably not an important one ;)

But please keep in mind, that using /home per default is the serious problem
you need to fix.
And please read the URLs I gave you in the initial bug report.

cheers,
Holger

2010-12-25 Thread Tanaka Akira
Package: manpages
Version: 3.05-1

ip(7) describes that the argument for IP_MULTICAST_IF is ip_mreqn or ip_mreq:

   IP_MULTICAST_IF
Set the local device for a multicast socket. Argument is an
  ip_mreqn or ip_mreq structure similar to IP_ADD_MEMBERSHIP.

But it should be ip_mreqn or in_addr.
It is different from IP_ADD_MEMBERSHIP.

At the original API of BSD multicast, IP_MULTICAST_IF takes struct in_addr.
http://www.kohala.com/start/mcast.api.txt

do_ip_setsockopt() in Linux net/ipv4/ip_sockglue.c seems to support
ip_mreqn and in_addr.

The problem can be seen with fvwm by using the ResizeOutline style.

xargs broke with the same error message:

Upgrading findutils to 4.4.2-1+b1 fixed the problem.

Hi,

Apparently modemmanager version 0.4+git.20100624t180933.6e79d15-1 can't
connect with the Nokia N900 because of a bug already known in Redhat and
Gentoo (in short: N900 appears to require a bit more
inter-character time on the serial port):

Bug#569013: Emacs for debian-reference (moreinfo)

2010-12-25 Thread Osamu Aoki
Hi,

This is reminder that this bug report is marked as moreinfo.

Have you found any sensible way to include Emacs intro info into
debian-reference without causing information overload. Please note I
have the following text which gives fair exposure to Emacs:

|
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch01.en.html#_the_text_editor
|
| 1.4.6. The text editor
|
| You should become proficient in one of variants of Vim or Emacs programs
| which are popular in the Unix-like system.
| ...
| If you chose either Emacs or XEmacs instead as your choice of the
| editor, that is another good choice indeed, particularly for
| programming. Emacs has a plethora of other features as well, including
| functioning as a newsreader, directory editor, mail program, etc. When
| used for programming or editing shell scripts, it intelligently
| recognizes the format of what you are working on, and tries to provide
| assistance. Some people maintain that the only program they need on
| Linux is Emacs. Ten minutes learning Emacs now can save hours later.
| Having the GNU Emacs manual for reference when learning Emacs is highly
| recommended.

Please note I have extensive section 1.3 for mc. So suggesting but not
recommending mc is valid thing.

Please also see:
1.4.8. Customizing vim
1.6.4. Global substitution with regular expression
In these examples, vim is used. So suggesting but not recommending vim
is valid thing.

I think if you have equivalents of 1.4.8 and 1.6.4 using Emacs in very
concise way, I can include such text for next release.

(One negative of adding Emacs to dependency line is that Emacs changes
package name with version transition. But it may not be so bad these
days.)

If you think current text is good enough, let me know too.

Osamu

Bug#584836: Bug in libgnupg-interface-perl fixed in revision 59010

2010-12-25 Thread intrigeri
Hi,

I have been intensively using libgnupg-interface-perl from
experimental (0.42.002-1) since it has been uploaded and I did not
experience any regression vs. 0.42.

Considering it only fixes half a dozen bugs with normal priority it
is of course too late in the freeze process to push this to Squeeze.

Thanks for you work!

Bug#584836: Bug in libgnupg-interface-perl fixed in revision 59010

Thanks for your feedback! The reason I did not yet reuploaded to
unstable was that now we are in deep freeze, wanted to have the in sid
and unstable for the case some problems arise the same version in
unstable and squeeze. On the other hand, libgnupg-interface-perl had
never really big problems and seems fine in the version in squeeze.

We can rethink the reasoning, and maybe reupload to unstable to make

Bug#607973: ITP: parti-all -- screen for remote X apps

---end quoted text---

As mentioned in the ITP, the tarball consists of three parts:

* parti: the window manager that is not usable according to upstream
website. I haven't tried it actually, since my main interest is in the
  xpra tool.
* xpra: a tool to detach/reattach running X programs, think of it as
'screen' utility but for X. Yet unlike VNC, the applications are
rootless. This tool is the reason I am interested in making the
package available in Debian, it is usable, me my colleagues use it
at work. Our use case is that we run some GUI CAD tools at work that
may take some long time, so we run those through an xpra session, then
we can check the simulation/synthesis when we get back home (over a
VPN connection), without getting sluggish response that you get when
  using VNC.
* wimpiggy: a library used by the above tools.

Eric Wayman wayma...@gmail.com writes:

I just tested the original beta2 squeeze installer. Selecting
Install from the splash screen menu exhibited the same behavior as
with the special ISO you had linked me to: a 30-second or so wait, and
then the installer process began and the language menu showed up.

Hi Eric,

Great, thank for the testing!

Replacing the closing -- quiet with edd=off as you instructed, the
installer still worked. In this case however, there was no wait at all
for the language menu to show up.

So the pause is definitely EDD-related, and it doesn't happen when you
boot the squeeze kernel from your hard disk, right? If so, then this
looks much like a BIOS oddity.

To everybody: I wonder why edd=off isn't the default in the installer,
does d-i load the edd module and use the info it provides? Apart from
this the issue seems unrelated to the Debian Installer.

Hmm, there is only one mktexlsr/texhash call in /usr/bin/updmap.
Hence we could simply run updmap-sys --nohash and an additional
 mktexlsr after it.

I didn't check yet if the ls-R update is needed during the run.

However I didn't check if an updated ls-R database is needed during
the updmap-sys run. In this case we can only patch updmap to update
only our dist texmf trees...and file an wishlist bug to upstream that
the texmf trees to be updated during updmap can be specified.

Of course this is non-sense. The normal system admin would expect
that updmap-sys refreshes the ls-R db as needed which would not be
the case after the change.

to problems as the psfonts.map etc file generated by updmap might

I hade a short look: texhash is only called one time shortly before
the end of the mkMaps function, which is only called one time at the
end of the main function. This means the updmap script itself does
not need an ls-R db update during the run, it just has to mek sure
the new map files are known to the system after they were created.

Hence we can replace the updmap-sys call by

updmap-sys --nohash
mktexlsr /usr/share/texmf /var/lib/texmf /usr/share/texmf-texlive

Perhaps make an own bash function for it.

Bug#607660: Marking a task as 'done/undone' toggles the wrong task

2010-12-25 Thread Yuri D'Elia
On Sat, 25 Dec 2010 19:10:39 +0100, Eike Nicklas wrote:
Thanks for the report. I cannot reproduce the unmarking of the wrong
task here, no matter in which order I do it (squeeze, i386). Could you
please recheck before I forward upstream?

I'm on sid/x86_64. Did you set the same date for both tasks? Did you try
with/without a time?

I can easily reproduce it here.

I do confirm, however, that unmarking does indeed take a lot longer
 than it should...

Thanks.

I still cannot easily reproduce the second wrong behavior I was
describing, but it happened to me at least once or twice after I
submitted the report. I think it's related to the above.

Bug#603572: Re: Bug Report #603572 / more feedback

2010-12-25 Thread Don Custer
Package: revelation
Version: 0.4.11-8
Severity: normal

I am not a programmer, and I have no programming knowledge, but this may be
helpful to someone...

The old ubuntu package has worked fine, but the newer Debian package has not,
and the constant notification of an update had become a constant annoyance.
Therefore, I decided to see if I could find some difference between the two
packages that would cause this problem.

The result came down to one file. The problem appears to be in the
/usr/share/revelation/libexec/revelation-applet file as I now have the newer
Debian package working as it should be. I simply copied the revelation-applet
file from the ubuntu package over the one from the newer Debian package and all
is working fine.

Hope someone finds this useful...

Merry Christmas!

Bug#607994: in epdfview in full-screen mode, right click gives no options to exit full-view

2010-12-25 Thread shirish शिरीष
Package: epdfview
Version: 0.1.7-4
Severity: important

*** Please type your report below this line ***
This happens all the time. I do not remember that for coming out of epdfview
full-screen one needs to press F11.

These are the steps to get into that situation.
1. Either do epdfview (some.pdf) on the CLI or click on epdfview from
Apps Office ePDFviewer.
2. If some pdf file is already opened or open some pdf from somewhere.
3. go to view and select full screen. View Full Screen.
4. Go through the whole presentation.
5. Don't remember F11. No way to get out.
6. Try to do right-click, nothing happens.
7. The only way out, go to VT1 or some VT terminal, kill epdfview

What should be happening is there should be an option to right-click and
have options like exit, exit full-screen etc.

Bug#607995: Depends should use dpkg-shlibdeps.

2010-12-25 Thread Goswin von Brederlow

Hi,

The rar package has far to broad depends:

Package: rar
Architecture: amd64
Version: 2:4.0.b2-1
Depends: ia32-libs
m...@book:~% ldd /usr/bin/rar

Seems like it doesn't even need any depends at all.

Please don't specify a depends on ia32-libs manually. Instead
Build-Depend on the required libs (of which I see none) and run
dpkg-shlibsdeps to generate the Depends.

Bug#569203: parti

2010-12-25 Thread Miguel Landaeta
Hi,

There is/was a previous ITP for parti. Please see #569203.

IMO, the parti window manager is not ready to be used by end
users. However, xpra is very usable but it has some issues
with keyboard management. I use this tool ocassionally
without issues.

Anyway, the previous ITP only provides two binary packages
(parti and python-wimpiggy). If there is any interest in
Debian to upload this package I don't really care if this is
maintained under collab-maint or PAPT but I would like to be
involved as co-maintainer.

I think as next step to have this available in Debian, we
should contact upstream to know their plans about the future
of this software.

Cheers,

Bug#605951: rxvt-unicode: rxvt-256color seems incompatible

2010-12-25 Thread Vincent Bernat
Package: rxvt-unicode
Version: 9.09-3
Severity: normal

Hi!

I hope to not bring any further rage to this bug report but I have
noticed that using TERM rxvt-256color does not allow me to draw
semi-graphical characters.

I am using zsh and using echotc, I can draw an horizontal line using:

echo $(echotc as)q$(echotc ae)

(q was from echotc ac output)

This works when TERM is set to rxvt-unicode or
rxvt-unicode-256color (I have them installed in my ~/.terminfo) but
does not work when using rxvt-256color.

I suppose this is because rxvt-256color does not get installed. I have
added the following entry at the end of my rxvt-unicode.terminfo:

rxvt-256color|rxvt-unicode terminal with 256 colors (X Window System),
use=rxvt-unicode-256color,

I have installed it with tic. It works fine now.

Ok, after reading these FAQ entries, I am more convinnced this is
 the right solution.

Q: Can you please port the diet libc to FreeBSD/Solaris/Windows?
 A: No.

Q: Can I compile or use the diet libc with a compiler that is not gcc?
 A: Compile: no. Use: yes.

So worrying about what *BSD/Solaris do would be pointless.

All this patch does is remove some underscores so that endian.h
checks __sparcv9 like is done in longlong.h. I only tested with gcc,
but this should work with the sun compiler too, if it's even
possible to use the sun compiler on linux.

Unlike reverting patch 0013, this should work even when compiling
 without -Os.

I was initially hesitant to give this bug a very high severity,
since it very indirectly breaks the system, but I suppose I need to
do that so #603882 can be fixed. I did try recompiling util-vserver
with this patched dietlibc-dev and it works now.

Do you plan on NMUing with this patch?

Cheers,
Julien

I've done some commits into PAPT SVN repository [1], I see that you
Michael Schutte some work in git [2]. Although I prefer git over SVN,
yet I think it's better to have it maintained under PAPT.

I have a question, is this:

python make_constants_pxi.py wimpiggy/lowlevel/constants.txt
wimpiggy/lowlevel/constants.pxi

really necessary ? I know that setup.py mentions it in the comments, yet
the Ubuntu package didn't run that, yet the build is successful and the
package works.

I think as next step to have this available in Debian, we
should contact upstream to know their plans about the future

I did send him an email few hours ago. Will forward it to you shortly.

I still think this is wrong, and the other patch must be reverted
instead, even if this may fix Ivan’s symptoms. I also believe that
this bug is the cause of mksh, built with dietlibc on sparc, seg-
faulting. If reverting this fixes Ivan’s problem, I think that’s
the way to go instead (and reopen the bug on libowfat, and fix it
there).

-=| Nicholas Bamber, Mon, Nov 01, 2010 at 07:40:40AM + |=-
 Package: dh-make-perl
 Version: 0.70-1
 Severity: minor

If you run dh-make-perl --closes # --pkg-perl --cpan
Module::Starter::Plugin::SimpleStore it fails to find the module. You have to
specify one of the component modules.

The argument to --cpan is a module name. dh-make-perl(1) says:

dh-make-perl [make] {SOURCE_DIR | --cpan MODULE} options...

… You can specify a module name with the --cpan switch and
dh-make-perl will download the module for you from a CPAN mirror,
or you can specify the directory with the already unpacked
sources.

Later on it says (apparently wrongly):

 --cpan DIST
Instructs dh-make-perl to fetch and extract the given CPAN
   distribution.

Big retitled.

Of course, falling back to CPAN distribution if module by that name
can't be found would be useful too. Cloning another bugreport.
