I, for one, don't care very much about the dependency, but more about
the fact that not having it installed could mean not being able to pull
the information, even by installing afterwards. A dpkg.log parser would
always work, except when the logs are rotated and old enough to have
been removed.

Yes, the 'dh_clean -k' -> 'dh_clean' change is not correct. I'm cc'ing
for the rest the debian-perl list, to have some further comments from
the other team members.

Julien, on the other side I got confirmation from Julien Blache in
#608413, that the backported change from the diff 2.54 to 2.55 would
work again with the cricket setup.

Debian Perl Group and Masahito, could you give some input for the rest
of the changes between the versions in squeeze and unstable for
libio-socket-inet6-perl?

This is NOT a bug. if you want to use cvCreateHist by Python,
You need to use the first argument a list.

e.g.
opencv.cv.cvCreateHist([2], opencv.cv.CV_HIST_ARRAY)

Thanks for pointing out this detail with the COLD shutdown. I have not
seen that before.

Yes it was reproducible after a reboot. Crash was as in total
crash. No keyboard function, no ssh login etc. But the power
button functioned :)

The first time I noticed this was when I asked the machine to
shutdown, where the afs crash stopped the shutdown sequence. After a
forced rebooting I made an attempt to shutdown the OpenAFS service
only, something which repeatably (well, three times in a row) crashed
the client machine totally and forced a power button induced
reboot. This was as long as the OpenAFS server was shutdown.

Once new disks to the server arrived and an OS was installed,
including OpenAFS db-server and fileserver, and the server machine was
up and running, I could start and shutdown OpenAFS client services on
the client machine normally. I had not changed or updated any packages
in the meantime. All the files I had backuped on the client
machine transferred back to the server over afs without problem, I
compared checksums after copying into afs.

A few more details that may (or may not) be important:

The client machine is a Pentium4 running Squeeze i386, (686 kernel).

I have a laptop that runs Squeeze amd64 and it is also an OpenAFS
client, but the client is not set to start at boot time. But when I
start afs services I normally don't shut them down each time I bring
the laptop away. Occasionally I reboot and a running afs client has
never caused any problems if it cannot contact the server at client
shutdown, nor computer shutdown.

Upgrading because of the problem with the 'bind' directive not working 
in the 'stable' 1.6 release. In 1.8, an error appears during dpkg 
install, "line 27: bind cannot be used without transparent support 
enabled". This can be fixed by getting the source, and fixing 
debian/rules so that --proxy becomes --proxy-transparent. Then rebuild 
the dpkg. Errors occur during build that --proxy-transparent is not 
recognized, but the resulting dpkg builds and runs just find (and the 
bind directive works). It does seem slow, but this may be an unrelated 
problem.

  I believe you're only crashing child processes here, not the master
  server process - but Moritz Muehlenhoff requested that this go in,
  and it seems reasonable.  It's also a really trivial patch.

I see a FTBFS on s390, a SIGSEGV in the main testsuite.  I've never
seen a segfault like that before, anywhere, so I hope it's transient.

Sauerbraten is a game that features online play. However, the developer
did not include any form of anti-cheating protection. As such, many
servers run addon to try to curb cheating. One such measure is run a
checksum against the maps the client has, and compare them to the ones
on the server. If different, the server will prevent you from playing.
In order for the checksum check to work,
the .ogz distributed by the Debian project must be identical to ones in
the offical archive, found here
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/sauerbraten/files/sauerbraten/2010_07_19/sauerbraten_2010_07_28_justice_edition_linux.tar.bz2/download).

This bug has already been reported to Ubuntu, but has not made it's way
upstream to Debian, yet. See below:

The correct driver is 'intel'  I don't how why you ended up with 'i810',
but in any case that would be a bug in xdebconfigurator, not the kernel.
Possibly 'i810' just works as an alias for 'intel'.

No, "type flottant" is incorrect because complex numbers are also
floating types (and are forbidden here). C99 has the following
definitions:

* There are three /real floating types/, designated as float, double,
  and long double.

* There are three /complex types/, designated as float _Complex,
  double _Complex, and long double _Complex.

* The real floating and complex types are collectively called
  the /floating types/.

* The type char, the signed and unsigned integer types, and the

Apologies for the oversight when renaming these binaries for the last
upload.

I think the scotch user base will expect the standard name of the gbase
binary.  So there are a couple of options: conflict with gbase, or
use /etc/alternatives.

Is there a way in popcon to see how many users install both of these?
It seems like the database should support this.  Hmm, the Homepage
listed in control is dead, and a search for "gbase gnome" turns up very
little, so it's hard for me to guess the overlap.  If there's little to
no overlap, then Conflicts is easier...

Bug#576274: Possible Bug Fix?

Good Morning,

I've been working on this bug for the last 3 days and think I've 
isolated and corrected the problem. Intel provides special (open source) 
linux drivers for their video cards at this url:

After looking over the site for awhile and attempting to install them I 
found that most were just updates to what we had already (pending 
upstream). So I went back into XOrg.conf to look through and try to see 
if perhaps the system was misconfigured.


This is what I saw:

I personally find it uneasy when all it tells me is that its 
"configured" so I went through the repositories to confirm I had the 
right driver packages and autoconfigs to attempt to "refresh" the conf 
file so to speak.


I installed/reinstalled the following packages: mesa-utils (7.0.3-7), 
xdebconfigurator (1.35), xserver-xorg (1:7.3+20), xserver-xorg-core 
(2:1.4.2-10.lenny3), xserver-xorg-video-dummy (1:0.3.0-1), 
xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.3.2-2+lenny8)


Then I ran 'xdebconfigurator', after it completed I got curious as to 
the changes it made so I went back to XOrg.conf to see, the following 
was changed:


Section "Device"
   Identifier"Configured Video Device"
   Driver"i810"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier"Configured Monitor"
EndSection


Its evidently using the i810 Intel drivers now. Though I have a 945GM 
card I dont know if there is a driver for that card specifically, or if 
it would make a difference.



I've been runing my system for 3 days now without interruption. Can 
someone else replicate these steps on an affected system to see if it 
fixes it? I might have just had a different problem...

So, we can see that ifconfig is capable of enabling this interface... but
not if we expect it to do so from what we have in /etc/network/interfaces! I
have some other Debian machines where I can type ifconfig eth0:x up and it
will just work without giving me any hassle. Very strange!

This is a bug that keeps getting reported again and again over the years and
it keeps not getting fixed. Either the threads go on for a long time and
then people stop posting, or an administrator closes them because the
originator didn't respond to a request for comments. I cannot imagine why
ifconfig should be throwing an error on something in
/etc/network/interfaces, when I can give it the EXACT SAME ARGUMENTS on the
command line and have it work fine.

I can use ifup/ifdown to turn on the interface and it does work, but if I
ifdown it and do /etc/init.d/networking restart, the interface does NOT come
back - presumably because of the broken state of ifconfig. This means any
time the box is rebooted, interfaces will not be turned back on. If I could
rely on the interfaces to be configured properly I wouldn't have even
bothered filing this bug, but I really need to know that my machine will
come back in a sane state without me having to manually tell it to do
something that it should already be able to do by itself.

I have tried net-tools 1.60-22 and -23, but that didn't fix the problem. I
saw in some other bug reports that it was a problem with some wireless tools
package, but I don't have that installed. It seems to be reported in both
Debian and Ubuntu. At this point I've spent a good six or seven hours trying
to figure out this problem and I'm stumped, so I hope someone can figure out
how to fix this!

is exhausted. The mono runtime needs to deal with it though. 
(I had to create a chroot btw, as the already mounted /dev/shm can not be 
changed as long as it's used by some process)

Which actually helped me understand the problem a bit better: the origin of the
offending 0xc3 byte is actually the error string "Permission non accordée"

reportbug doesn't have access to one of munin-node configuration files.

Attached is a patch that works for me. I don't know Python, so I hope it's
correct. The way the charset is guessed is copied from line 504 of
/usr/bin/reportbug.

Hi Anders,

I'm going to forward this bug upstream.  It's been my past experience that
whenever the shutdown message says "COLD", trouble is ahead and the
shutdown often crashes.  I don't know what causes cold shutdowns instead

Once AFS shutdown has crashed once, you're generally hosed until you do a
clean reboot.  Have you rebooted this system since?  Can you reproduce the

You're running into one of the banes of writing Lintian test suites: dpkg
is too smart.  :)  Take a look at the control files of the generated
package.  You'll see that dpkg-gensymbols updated the symbols file for you
to fix the package name.

If you override dh_makeshlibs to run:

dh_makeshlibs -- -plibfilo

instead, that will correctly generate a test case for this tag.  (I didn't
commit that change since I'm not sure that shared-libs-non-pic-i386 is the
right place to put such a test, rather than in a more general test case.)

The error message 'NMI watchdog failed to create perf event...'
does not make it clear that this is a fatal error for the
watchdog.  It also currently prints the error value as a
pointer, rather than extracting the error code with PTR_ERR().
Fix that.

Add a note to the description of the 'nowatchdog' kernel
parameter to associate it with this message.

Hi Thomas,
most people who have a restricted number of ip addresses use name based 
virtualhosts though. I rather think that not everyone is running bind in order 
to ensure name resolving. External nameservers are another option and I don't 
know wheter it can be considered as a default to have an own one.

I believe Lintian is correct and the man page is wrong, although I'm not
positive.  But I looked through the source of the .Bd macro in the doc
tmac macro set, and I don't see any indication that it changes the default
translation of the - character in groff to an ASCII hyphen instead of a
Unicode hyphen.  I also see that when groff was switched to support
Unicode output correctly, groff's own documentation that used .Bd was
changed to escape hyphens inside .Bd -literal blocks.  See:

It looks like we currently check source packages first in the normal mode
of running lintian on a *.changes file as an artifact of the fact that
dpkg-genchanges always lists the source package first.  The code (in
Lintian::Schedule) doesn't do anything particularly intelligent.

It is definitely the case that we need to check the source package before
the binary packages, or at least unpack the source package before checking
the binary packages, if we want to use metadata about the source package
in the binary package checks.  I think all the cross-package checks we've
run into so far have wanted things in that order: binary checks wanting
things from the source package, but not the source checks wanting things
from binary packages.

If we start explicitly taking advantage of this by doing more
cross-package testing, we should modify Lintian::Schedule to ensure that
all source packages are checked before all binary packages even if people
are doing things like lintian *.deb *.dsc.

Aha!  I was working under the incorrect assumption that dnsmasq was all
that was needed after boot to enable networking, but actually
NetworkManager is involved in getting basic connectivity.

Yes, I don't think there's anything that dnsmasq can do, nor do I think
there's anything that OpenAFS can do in this case.  If one is using
NetworkManager, network services just won't be available at boot, and
nothing one can put into the init script will help.  They won't be
available until after NetworkManager runs and authenticates, which often
has to wait until the user logs in so that NetworkManager has access to
wireless authentication credentials.

Starting AFS when there's no network available should generally work when
using dynroot provided that one doesn't attempt to access any files in AFS
until the network is available, but one will get timeouts if one tries to
access AFS before the network is present.

Agreed.  I think the bug against dnsmasq can be closed.

Brent, I'm confused by the bug history here: what happens when AFS doesn't
start?  Your log messages in the original bug report only show a log
message that isn't printed, so far as I know, by the init script that
comes with the openafs-client package.  What sort of behavior do you see
when AFS is started prior to the network being available?

Bug#608979: Crash with long HOME environment variable

What you're describing could quite likely be the scenario of why its
crashing. If you are happy that what you're describing is the problem, then
implement a patch, verify the crash is gone and close the bug.

I found the crash automatically while fuzzing the Debian package repository
using an opensource tool called sharefuzz which intercepts getenv() and
returns a long buffer in an attempt to trigger overflows. I did not do any
source code analysis or any more investigation once the crash was triggered.
Because sharefuzz replaces the environment variable, it fits into the
scenario you are describing and may not necessarily be related to the
variable's length.

While looking at some other issues with libpam-encfs I also looked at
this bug report.

Is this still a problem? I cannot reproduce it at all,

Then ntop shows with a C in aptitude.

When I try to purge ntop with aptitude, it prints this:

I added "exit" as the 2nd line of /etc/init.d/ntop and then the aptitude purge

I've done everything mentioned above more than once, so it seems 100%
reproducible for me.

Hi. I'd like to "up" this bug. Some months ago there was launched
first cyrillic TLD: .рф (.xn--p1ai). However, it can't be accessed
through the bind utils like nslookup:

It's extremely boring when one has to work with cyrillic domains. As
far as I know, at least Gentoo has support for such domains (with
USE=idn flag), it'll be nice if Debian has it too.

Hi Alexandre,

Apologies for the long delay in responding; as you've identified a
workaround which works for you, and this seems to be an isolated
problem, I haven't given this bug report a high priority. However I
haven't forgotten about it.

That said, I don't really have any ideas at the moment as to what could
cause this; I have enough information to try and reproduce this on my
own system now though, so I'll give that a go at some point.

  flag is never written to the questions.dat file (for cdebconf-udeb

Seen flags are still being properly ignored when a udeb is successfully
configured. For example, one can go back to the main menu and change
language, and is re-prompted with the language question.

Also, if I make a menu item such as user-setup ask a question and later fail,
I repeatedly selecting it shows the question each time. So bug #229648
has not reocurred.

So I suspect this bug is specific to the passthrough frontend -- notice
that both examples given, tasksel and grub-setup, use passthrough. Likely,
seen flags are being set in /target.

Hello Silvio,
Could you provide more information about the 'long HOME environment variable' ?

So far what I found is that if HOME is set to something different from the user 
home,
(e.g. HOME=a), then SDL_SetVideoMode() fails, which cause toppler to do exit(1).
Unfortunately, one of the destructor (~configuration) then do 
fseek(NULL, 0, SEEK_SET); which cause a segfault.

I run KDE with the taskbar set to auto-hide. In this situation, certain apps, 
when
run full-screen, do not get mouse events when I click in their window near the 
bottom
edge of the screen.

One Debian-standard app that illustrates this problem is xev. I can launch 
that, and set
its window to fullscreen via the Alt-F3 menu. If the KDE taskbar is set to 
always
visible, it is still covered up by the xev window, and I can click close to the 
bottom
of that and get event messages like this:

ButtonPress event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x421,
root 0x1ad, subw 0x0, time 731121555, (6,1016), root:(6,1016),
state 0x0, button 3, same_screen YES

However, if the KDE taskbar is set to auto-hide, such clicks do not cause event 
reports.
Clicks in other areas of the screen still work. Also if I maximize the window 
as opposed
to making it fullscreen, the clicks work.

I first noticed this problem with my builds of Blender 2.5x beta. Oddly, the 
Debian-packaged
2.49b version of Blender works fine. So I originally thought this was a Blender 
bug, but
that doesn't explain why xev, which is about as simple an app for responding to 
X11 events
as you can get, exhibits the same problem.

Currently it is possible to replace the whole selected game with the
Tools|Import One PGN Game menu item.  Websites which offer the online
analogue of correspondence chess often have a feature to export the
game moves in PGN format, and doing that periodically combined with
the Import feature of scid is usually easier than entering each move
manually, at least for this lazy chessplayer.  However each time I do
this I lose all the analysis I saved as variations in scid.  So, I
would find it extremely useful if there were a "merge PGN" or "sync
PGN" feature that would just append the moves from the PGN that are
_not_ in the game, and leave the common moves (and their variations!)
untouched.

This is not the case: the Depends that was added was 
libm17n-0: Depends: m17n-contrib, m17n-db,

Bug#608709: Please enable shared libraries

Hi Alessandro,

I have been working on packaging this myself, but I have not made
significant progress (hence the lack of an ITP).  I'll gladly leave
the packaging work to you, I can provide you with the very little I do
have if you want.  Just a request for the package, though: there is
now experimental support for shared libraries in the newer beta
versions of Discount that you can enable by the --shared option to
'configure.sh'.  Please could you configure discount with this flag,
and install the library, when you package it?  I think it would make
the package much more useful.  Hopefully the support will be in a
non-beta version by the time the package comes out.

I think it would be enough for the phrase "conffile" to be a link to 
section 10.7.1. The font is already different. I was making a more 
general point but conffiles is clearly the critical concept in this 
section.

as it happens, aptitude is probably doing the right thing in this case, as the
versions of diff and mktemp are dummy packages, to smooth upgrades, so 
installing
them would seem to be pointless.  I'm going to install them anyway, to get
apticron to shut up.

I suppose the correct fix might be to make the script use aptitude to generate
apticron's list of upgrades, and it might make sense to resolve the differences
between apt-get and aptitude in this case, but the simplest change is to simply
suggest the use of apt-get in place of aptitude in the mail that is sent.

Having just installed diff, I find that when I then try to remove it, it's 
essential,
so it seems that apt-get has it right in this case (since I would hope that I 
would
have all the essential packages, even if they are just about to become obsolete)

The same goes for mktemp.

Yes: it's as if the machine is throwing random errors just to be difficult. :(

So, I decided on a new tack: I booted without an xorg.conf file, and it 
_almost_ works. It looks like the card is detected properly and drm is loading. 
The machine doesn't freeze, and I  get a corrupted desktop. There's a black 
screen, and a corrupted mouse cursor I can move around.

So, I installed a minimal xorg.conf file and attempted to fix the screen 
problems. Unfortunately, I couldn't, but it looks like we're very close. The 
problem seems to be that X is having problems getting proper screen info. The 
error I'm seeing on my monitor (which as 1680x1050) is "vrefresh out of range". 
There's also an "unhandled monitor" message.

If it helps, output for "cvt 1680x1050" is: # 1680x1050 59.95 Hz (CVT 1.76MA)

The conffiles concept has definitely not been superseded.  All that's
happened is that commonly used packaging tools like debhelper will
automatically mark any file in /etc as a conffile, which has meant
somewhat less developer understanding of conffiles since developers no
longer have to worry about it manually (but has also quashed a type of
common bug).

In general, Policy is never *required* to provide a rationale.  It's
usually for the best if it does so that we can remember why rules exist
when considering further Policy changes later, but there are a lot of
rules in Policy currently unaccompanied by specific rationale.  But I'll
see if I can add something.

The reason I would write down as the rationale is fairly simple: it's a
violation of robustness to distribute across multiple packages knowledge
of the exact syntax of a configuration file and how to make modifications
to it, since if that syntax ever changes, we end up with a huge mess.  If
all changes are made through scripts provided by the owner of that
configuration file, we can change the syntax of that configuration file by
only modifying one package.

There's a secondary advantage that it's easier to robustly make changes to
configuration files if force all that code to go through a single path,
rather than expecting everyone's maintainer scripts to handle various
error cases gracefully.

An example would be useful, yes.  I think useradd is not a bad example, so
I can add that.  update-inetd is possibly going to change, so I don't
really want to add that as an example.

And yes, it would be good here, I think, to explicitly mention breaking
configuration files into loadable directories of fragments as superior to
most schemes of sharing configuration files.

Hm.  That reads very strangely to me, since conffiles are generally a
subset of configuration files.

Since then, we've actually added support for /etc/profile.d for LSB
compliance.  I suspect that partly changes the original request.  I do

This is documentation of dpkg's internals and will be pulled out of

I've set the severity of this check as wishlist, maybe it could be
tagged as experimental or something, but still the removal of
unneeded .la files is a release goal.

The description should of course point people to documentation that
explain in which cases the .la should stay or not.
