Bug#610043: xorg: Incorrect screen size and resolution

2011-01-14 Thread T.F. Torrey

Hello Cyril,

First, let me say that I truly appreciate your timely responses and
personal attention. I am, however, a little puzzled by your reply.

On Sat, 15 Jan 2011 03:35:13 +0100, Cyril Brulebois
wrote:

Hi again.

Screen should be 96x96 dpi, but instead is ~120x100. Problem exists
on standard Squeeze install. Upgrading to packages in experimental
does not help.

I already answered your installation report. Closing per second
paragraph of:

I didn't file the installation report because it didn't work correctly,
I filed it because the d-i team asks for one when the new installer is
tested. I filed this bug report because the first part of your response
in the message you refer to was: "General answer, report a bug:
reportbug xorg". However, it seems by your replies that neither report
was welcome.

Regarding the bug report, I'm confused as to why you closed the bug,
when the display is not correct and can not be made correct. Is the
Debian BTS only intended for Debian-specific bugs, bugs with a
sufficient level of interest, or something else I don't understand?

Finally, regarding the bug itself, your original response suggested
that this may be a problem of upstream support. It may be useful
information that the display is correct under the latest version of
Kubuntu, which is using 7.5+6 of xorg as opposed to Squeeze's 7.5+8.
I could provide a copy of the log Kubuntu generates if desired.

This message is intended to provide information and work toward a
solution; I hope it is received in that spirit.

Best regards,
Terry

Bug#608442: Input of non-ASCII characters broken

2011-01-14 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: postgresql
Version: 8.4.5-0squeeze2
Severity: normal

I'm seeing this too, in older versions of psql I could paste any
unicode text that didn't have control characters and it would work
correctly, this is no longer the case.

this possibly stems from a recent change to psql to use libedit instead
of libreadline

as a work around you can disable libedit by doing

"cat | psql" instead of "psql"

but that also disables all the useful editing features.

Thank you very much for the Herculean effort

Thanks for pointing this. The file was indeed a mix of ISO-8859-2 (in
the Last-Translator field) and UTF-8 (elsewhere) but advertized as
ISO-8859-2.

I converted it to UTF-8.

note that ghc’s REAMDE.Debian needs to be adjusted (or removed

Well, rats. Is this still reproducible? If so, I assume many people

Bug#592569: ghostscript: Please make -dSAFER the default

2011-01-14 Thread Jonathan Nieder
retitle 592569 gs: ps documents can overwrite arbitrary files unless -dSAFER is
used
quit

Hi Paul,

Paul Szabo wrote:

> Please make the -dSAFER option the default.
>
> For discussion, rationale etc please see bugs #583183 and #584663

Thanks for a reminder. I'm retitling this bug to clarify the issue
as I understand it (mostly based on [1]).

Background: as gs(1) explains:

-dSAFER
Disables the "deletefile" and "renamefile" operators and
the ability to open files in any mode other than
read-only. This strongly recommended for spoolers,
conversion scripts or other sensitive environments where a
badly written or malicious PostScript program code must be
prevented from changing important files.

Upshot:

Malicious postscript files can write arbitrary files, unless
the -dSAFER option is used.

Proposed fix:

Use the behavior of -dSAFER by default and introduce a new
-dNOSAFER option to restore the older behavior.

Patch is at [2].

Hope that helps,
Jonathan

I can't believe there is no way to get all the results via one command.

I am used to doing
# apt-cache search $@|less

I see, I must write an alias to achieve
{ axi-cache search $@ && axi-cache more ;} |less

So you need a axi-cache --all
(but that would be a little different than
apt-cache -a, --all-versions)

Bug#610050: add documentation regarding module loading

2011-01-14 Thread Sven Hartge
Package: isdnutils-base
Version: 1:3.9.20060704+dfsg.2-8
Severity: wishlist

Hi!

Please add documentation regarding module loading of i4l modules to the
package, maybe even a Debian.NEWS entry.

Since Bug#58851 the i4l modules will not be
automatically loaded by the system because the PCI aliases have been removed
from the code. For HFC/HiSAX cards for example the mISDN driver hfcpci.ko will
be loaded instead, which of course is useless if you want to use i4l tools.

((
 Even worse: you can load the hisax.ko even while hfcpci.ko is loaded and vice
 versa. I have _no_ idea what will happen, if both modules are active and
 trying to use the same resources.
))

To use the old i4l drivers the admin has to blacklist the mISDN drivers.

I choose to put all this into one config file:

,[/etc/modprobe.d/hisax.conf
| blacklist hfcpci
| options hisax type=35 protocol=2 id=line0
`

Grüße,
Sven.

Since you think imapsync *must* be gratis for all from anywhere (unless shame)

I tried to reproduce this error and I couldn't.

In a clean lenny chroot I installed apache2, tomcat5.5,
tomcat5.5-webapps, and libapache2-mod-jk. After that
I setup a trivial test website.

I upgraded libapache2-mod-jk to 1.2.30-1 and the website
keeps working. There were not errors at mod_jk.log.

In another clean lenny chroot configured in the same way
and after doing a dist-upgrade to squeeze (and also
upgrading libapache2-mod-jk to 1.2.30-1), the website
keeps working. There were not errors at mod_jk.log.

Note: my workstation is an amd64.

Cheers,

Bug#607715: [PATCH] i#116187: report left/right page margin setting ignored on Unix 64 bit

2011-01-14 Thread Lionel Elie Mamane
Does not fit release blocker criteria, but would still be *very* nice
to have for the release, as it easily fixes / papers over a rather
annoying / stupid (from the user's point of view) bug:

 When editing a report in design view, in Format / Page, if one
 changes the left or right margin, then all changed settings for all
 margins (and other things) are lost and come back their value at
 opening of that dialog. This makes it impossible to set the left or
 right margin.

This may not be the "real" fix attacking the root cause, but it at
least hides the problem for the user.

Hi,

I found the attached feature (debsnap just printing what it would
download, without actually downloading it) useful. Please consider
including it in the next release.

Thanks,

Bug#610047: POSIX: the use of slash "/" is tremendously confusing for users

2011-01-14 Thread frenchn00b
Package: rsync
Version: 3.0.7-2
Severity: important

Hello,

This a report that most of users may have experienced, at least once, with rsync

the use of slash "/" for defining the folder is not trivial, or not without
consequences.

If the use use the regular folder rules, then one can end up into backing up or
losses of data or directory tree.

I would just like to notice it. I am worry about data losses for some users,
thus that explains this bug report.

Thanks for developing for Linux. It is great to give for all of us the chance
to use Linux.
Kind regards
F.

Bug#610046: xmobar: BatteryP docs in manpage are incorrect

2011-01-14 Thread Andres Salomon
Package: xmobar
Version: 0.11-2
Severity: minor

The xmobar manpage describes setting BatteryP in ~/.xmobarrc as:

BatteryP Args Dirs RefreshRate

This is actually reversed
; sticking 'BatteryP [] ["olpc-battery"] 10'
into my ~/.xmobarrc doesn't work. However, 'BatteryP ["olpc-battery"]
[] 10' *does* work on my OLPC XO.

Another minor manpage nit; the sentence 'Args is either a blank list
([]) or a template specified as ["-t","template].' has a mismatched
quote in it (it should be '["-t","template"].' That is repeated in a
number of places throughout the manpage.

2011-01-14 Thread James Brown
Package: rkhunter

*** Please type your report below this line ***
I installed the package 'chkconfig'.
After that when I scanning my system with `rkhunter -c` it says that

I have used `rkhunter --propupd` and scanned my system again but it told
me the same in spite of my using

I have the above problem only with '/bin/chkconfig', `rkhunter -c` after
`rkhunter --propupd` don't complains

Sorry that it took so long to get back to you.
I had forwarded this bug upstream in the meantime, where we discussed if
we should employ some heuristics which handle cases like this where
current_now is ridiculuously high directly after unplug.
We haven't figured out yet, if it is just buggy hardware reporting
incorrect values, or if there is a bug in the kernel.
That said, upstream is not particularly happy to add such a quirk mode
to upower, but this seems to be a more common problem, so we need a
solution for this.

In the mean time, you can apply a workaround, which won't use
remaining-time as indicator for when to suspend/hibernate, but the
remaining percentage. For that run:

gconftool-2 -s /apps/gnome-power-manager/general/use_time_for_policy -t
bool false

or use gconf-editor.

Cheers,
Michael

Bug#581232: not a bug

2011-01-14 Thread Mike O'Connor
dpkg in lenny depends on lzma, so lzma must be Priority: required. dpkg in
squeeze and later does not have this dependency, so the Priority:
required is not warranted, and the override for this package was changed.

This is intentional, and in no way a bug. so I'm closing this report.

Bug#584973: Cherry G230 keyboard freezes on language selection

2011-01-14 Thread Thomas Walter
I'm having the same problem with a Cherry G230 keyboard and either rc-1
and the daily build 2011-01-14 i386 netinstall CDs.

I can choose to install at boot, but as soon as the language selection
is displayed, the keyboard freezes.

AFAIK Cherry keyboards are quite popular, so the hid-cherry module
really is required.

Kind regards,
 Thomas "Balu" Walter

there's a macro which should help: __libmansuffix__. It's already used
all over the place, but not yet completely:
| $ git grep __libmansuffix__ man/*.man|wc -l
| 267
| $ git grep 3Xt man/*.man|wc -l

A single regex might be sufficient to get everything sorted out.

I meant whenever new releases of both are available and if some kind
of mix and match (permutations and combinations you would like to try)
to see which is the best possible experience we can give to our users.

Bug#610036: manpages: update manpage for resolv.conf for IPv6 support

2011-01-14 Thread Witold Baryluk
Package: manpages
Version: 3.27-1
Severity: normal

I today discovered undocumented feature of resolv.conf
Nameply nameserver can be a IPv6 address!
Current manpage (implicitly) says only IPv4 is supported.

So for example:

==

nameserver 2001:470:20::2
nameserver 149.156.82.205
search smp.if.uj.edu.pl

==
will work

PS. Manpage also misses the important fact that empty lines, and lines begining
 (?) from # are ignored.
I was always thinking that putting # will make some error, as it was no
information
in manpage about it, but I found that resolvconf put # automatically so i
assume it works.
There are probably few other syntax rules, which are not mentioned.

Bug#572361: control-g

2011-01-14 Thread Peter Eckersley
Interesting that control-g works here. I (and other people I know) were
tormented by this problem and nobody discovered that solution. Perhaps
because there are no other common cases in mutt where control-g is needed?

I think the average console user will try control-c and escape in this
situation, but it's not remotely intuitive that you need to type bell
characters to escape from some bad UI state. Mutt should definitely either
hint the user that this option is available, or interpret control-c or escape
as the user (almost certainly) intends it.

Hmmm. What I would suggest is let's have a two-pronged approach to this :-

a. Do whatever you need to do to figure out the CEGUI 0.8 soname issue
or whatever it is.

b. Figure out some way to keep us guys happy. If you are able to have
some repo. outside Debian where we can test/play our game and new
releases of either the game or/and game engine so that when it is in
the Debian release cycle, its current, stable and has no obvious bugs
(as in game not starting etc.)

I cannot speak about Manuel but I would be willing/test new versions
both of CEGUI as well as sumwars as and when they are done.

In fact, if all the other pre-requisites of the game are taken (as in
being current) I don't see any reason why we couldn't make the things
more current, more stabler overall enhancing the Debian project .

You would have to do one thing if you do take this endeavour though,
be explicit about your instructions for getting the library binary .

I do not know anything aout the internals of the library but in case
if you have in mind any tests to test functionality as to what works
or doesn't, be willing to be a scapegoat and test whatever is needed
and tell/share whatever works or doesn't.

 Of course, how do we do that, what mechanism do we follow, either a
mail or be part of some mailing list where bugs/issues of new packages
which are not yet in Debian release cycle should be put up, all of
that you would have to figure out (because I have very limited
understanding of the Debian Project as a whole)

Looking forward to taking this discussion as well as get something
productive done as a result.

I've just uploaded 1.12-1 to unstable, which contains a completely
rewritten test suite (with comments like "check if the interface is
multicastable" or similar).

May I ask you that you try to build 1.12-1 in the same environment?

Bug#610033: RFA: gnome-mount -- wrapper for (un)mounting and ejecting storage devices

2011-01-14 Thread Michael Biebl
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I hereby request a new maintainer for gnome-mount.
The package itself has more or less become useless on Linux, as GNOME
uses gvfs/g-d-u on that plattform nowadays, and I requested its removal
from all Linux architectures.

On kfreebsd, where GNOME still uses HAL, the gnome-mount package is
still in use. So preferably the kfreebsd team is taking over the
package.

The package should no longer be built on Linux architectures. In case no
new maintainer is found, I plan to do a last upload with such a
change myself.

As I already filed and RFA for partimage, I would also like to see the
new maintainer take over the partimage-doc package, which should be low
maintenance, as it basically hasn't changed for year.

Bug#610030: gnome-shell doesn't start (missing depedency?)

2011-01-14 Thread Lech Karol Pawłaszek
Package: gnome-shell
Version: 2.91.5-1
Severity: grave
Tags: experimental
Justification: renders package unusable

Hello.

Today I've upgraded gnome-shell from 2.91.3-2 to 2.91.5-1. And as the
2.91.3-2 version (kinda) worked the 2.91.5-1 version doesn't.

ike@macbook:~$ gnome-shell -r
mutter: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-3.0.so.0:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

My little investigation shows that according to this:
http://packages.debian.org/search?searchon=contents&keywords=libgtk-x11-3.0.so.0&mode=filename&suite=experimental&arch=any

library is in libgtk3.0-0 package and I have this package installed:
macbook:~# apt-cache policy libgtk3.0-0
libgtk3.0-0:
  Installed: 2.99.2-1
  Candidate: 2.99.2-1

however file list for amd64 doesn't show this file:
http://packages.debian.org/experimental/amd64/libgtk3.0-0/filelist

How can I help to make gnome-shell usable again?

Kind regards,

Hi,

ppp 2.4.5 has been in the archive since July last year, and 2.4.5-4
since August and there haven't been any previous reports of fundamental
issues, so the package is apparently not "completely broken for most
people", which it would have to be to justify the severity you used.

I'm downgrading the bug to important and will let the maintainer decide
what to do from there.

> umtsmon version 0.9 .

This software appears not to be in Debian, and hasn't been updated in
nearly two years; maybe it's just not compatible with the new version of
ppp?

Regards,

Adam

Bug#610027: devscripts: deb-reversion forces use of /tmp and can run out of space

2011-01-14 Thread Neil Mayhew
Package: devscripts
Version: 2.10.69
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

When reversioning a large package on a system that has a small /tmp,
deb-reversion will fail with messages like this:

tar: ./usr/...: Cannot write: No space left on device

Setting TMPDIR n the environment doesn't help, because deb-reversion hard-codes
the use of /tmp:

  TMPDIR=$(mktemp -d /tmp/deb-reversion.XX)

Changing this as follows solves the problem:

  TMPDIR=$(mktemp -d --tmpdir deb-reversion.XX)

This allows mktemp to use TMPDIR from the environment, and it defaults to using
/tmp if this isn't set.

Bug#610026: openbox stalls consuming 100% CPU when pcb-gtk is started

2011-01-14 Thread Ivan Shmakov
Package: openbox
Version: 3.3-2.1

Starting pcb-gtk (as of pcb-gtk 20091103-2) leads openbox to
stall while consuming 100% CPU.

As per my observations using twm (1:1.0.1-4), pcb-gtk initially
opens a very small (possibly 0x0) main window, which is then
extended as necessary after all its other windows are mapped.

out this problem.

here's a preinst which i think should accomplish this safely:

#!/bin/sh

set -e

abort=false
if [ -L /usr/share/zoneminder/events ]; then
l=$(readlink /usr/share/zoneminder/events)
if [ "$l" != "/var/cache/zoneminder/events" ]; then
abort=true
fi
fi
if [ -L /usr/share/zoneminder/images ]; then
l=$(readlink /usr/share/zoneminder/images )
if [ "$l" != "/var/cache/zoneminder/images" ]; then
abort=true
fi
fi

if [ "$abort" = "true" ]; then
cat >&2 << EOF
Aborting installation of zoneminder due to non-default symlinks in
/usr/share/zoneminder for the images and/or events directory, which could
result in loss of data. Please move your data in each of these directories to
/var/cache/zoneminder before installing zoneminder from the package.
EOF
exit 1

fi

#DEBHELPER#

exit 0

though the warning could use some improvement.

looking at the fast approaching squeeze release, and the possibility of
data-loss for people switching from manual/source installs to the package, i
think it might be worth including this now. long-term, something more
sophisticated and intelligent will definitely be needed.

In the Debian 5 version you used, you could have switched the system locale by
pressing the F1 button in the syslinux gfxboot screen.
Unfortunately, the gfxboot screen is not yet available in the Debian 6
version. You can switch the system locale by pressing TAB in the syslinux menu
and replace "de_CH" with "en_US" to get an English system.

Where's the patch? Anyway, there's a v4 being reviewed on

Well I don't have any DVDs and the cdrom drive is not easily
accessible. I tried booting

http://www.imedias.ch/dateien/lernstick-testversion/lernstick_debian5_2010-11-09.iso

with xen configuration

name = 'lernstick'
vcpus = '1'
memory = '1024'
kernel = '/usr/lib/xen/boot/hvmloader'
builder = 'hvm'
device_model='/usr/lib/xen/bin/qemu-dm'
disk = [
'file:/local/xen/lernstick/lernstick_debian5_2010-11-09.iso,hdc:cdrom,r',
 'file:/local/xen/lernstick/usb.img,hda,w' ]
vif = [ 'bridge=eth0,mac=52:54:00:12:35:11' ]
vnc=1
vnclisten='0.0.0.0'
vncdisplay=22
vncpasswd='secret'
keymap='sv'
usbdevice='tablet'
localtime=1
boot = 'd'

but it gives me an error message in german and does not let me
copy&paste it :-) It seems to not recognize my empty usb.img as an usb
stick.

I tried creating partition with fdisk and filesystem with mkfs.vfat
but it still can't recognize it as an usb stick.

...

Sorry to answer so late.

Indeed, there is a packaging problem :o(

You can instead download libpt2.8.1 from
http://snapshot.debian.org/package/ptlib/2.8.1-1/, tell me if you need
instructions on how to do it.

--
Eugen Dedu

There was no real problem getting the ptlib package installed,
and the experimental version of SimpleOPAL didn't crash on startup
with

-s '/dev/dsp'  or   -s  "Intel 82801DB-ICH4"

but the sound didn't seem to work.
I tried switching between those two and -s "Default"
and there were no warning messages or complaints, they
were listed in the startup info as the soundcard, but
there was no sound when I made a call vrs. Default, where there
was sound for both input and out, verified by call a
SIP echo server.

Then please make a bug report upstream, at

Bug#609466: Patch may be available for this issue

Hello,

Recently David Miller has posted a patch for this issue, see this
thread:

I'm CC'ing Frans van Berckel who has confirmed that the patch fixed
the issue for him. If you can confirm that it fixes it for you as
well, feel free to file a bug report agains linux-2.6 with this
information. There is probably no chance at this point to get it into
squeeze r0, but we can target it for the first update.

Bug#608979: Crash with long HOME environment variable

2011-01-14 Thread Nico Golde
tags 608979 - security

thanks

Hi,
this is no security bug. As far as I can tell this is a NULL
ptr dereference when create_local_config_file() returns NULL
without checking if fopen failed when attempting to save a
configuration file. There might be a similar case, that's
what I've seen with a quick glance. As far as I can tell
there is no buffer overflow in processing HOME even though
the code looks really bad. So I'm downgrading this bug.

Cheers
Nico

Bug#610018: /usr/share/doc-base/debian-history.ko: Typo in `Document:' field causes doc-base to complain at install time.

2011-01-14 Thread Robert Luberda
Package: debian-history
Version: 2.14
Severity: minor

Hi,

There's a typo in debian-history.ko causing doc-base to complain at
install time:

 Processing triggers for doc-base ...
 Processing 9 changed doc-base files...
 Error while merging debian-history.lt with
/usr/share/doc-base/debian-history.lt: format html already defined

The error message is a bit cryptic (I'll work to make it more
user-friendly), but it means that doc-base failed to merge two
different doc-base files having the same value of the `Document'
field (i.e. debian-history.lt), because both files provide
documentation in the same format (i.e. html). Such merging is
allowed only for documentation in different formats - please see
section 2.5.1 of `Debian doc-base Manual'.

 $ egrep '(Document|Format)' /usr/share/doc-base/debian-history.ko
 Document: debian-history.lt
 ^-- should be .ko, I guess
 Format: HTML

 $ egrep '(Document|Format)' /usr/share/doc-base/debian-history.lt
